"In summer 2005, John Romero's stint at Midway came to an end. The ex-id Software and ex-Ion Storm staffer had joined the company in 2003 as Creative Director and was involved with Gauntlet project Seven Sorrows. Shortly after his departure, he stated he was "looking at lots of exciting developments" but added that it'd be a few months before he announced his next destination.
Well, the sand's finally stopped falling through the hourglass and we can now exclusively reveal that the industry legend is at a new company and working on a massively multiplayer online project.

"I started looking at what I was going to do next, so I looked around on the net and I saw there was an opportunity for an MMO, there was a person starting an MMO so I contacted him," Romero told us recently, explaining where his involvement with the project began. "We talked for hours on the phone, we had a lot of common interests and ideas about this title and so basically this guy was really excited, brought me on as a co-founder of the company and I've been here for almost four months now.

Strangely, Romero isn't willing to divulge the name of the company, nor is he slapping a name on the MMO title. "I can't really say too much... this is [a] complete secret, stealth company", he said, adding cryptically that "This is not a typical games company and we're not making typical games".
According to Romero (who says he loves MMOs), the game he's working on is "very different from any other MMO for some special reasons." Precisely what those special reasons are, he wouldn't elaborate. He did, however, admit that funding for the project is lurking in the many millions of dollars bracket. "It's a lot of money, this is the most money I've ever spent on a game - in Gauntlet it was like $10 million, but this is much more," Romero revealed.

As for when we'll first get to see Romero's MMO title, he said nothing will be shown until next year. What exactly is he going to uncover? Should the likes of Blizzard and World of Warcraft be worried? We can only wait and see.

Read more from John Romero in PC Zone issue #165, out this Thursday, February 2."

I hope this MMO thing is just a fad, a few is OK, but how many do we need? I guess everyone sees the green rolling into Vivendi/Blizzard and wants to follow suit. Seems like it's a bit risky though, as the majority of these MMO's seem to crash 'n' burn or never even get released.

Great, another game type for him to screw up. :(

But seriously, I'm with Doc. on this one. Beating up on Romero is so five years ago.

Fad ? Why would it be.

Look at the success of Everquest, SWG, World of Warcraft, Lineage 1 and 2. They arent ever going away.

I meant more in the sense of, everyone has to make one to cash in, like everyone was making an "extreme" sports title a few years ago. It's certainly a viable genre, but everyone and their mother shouldn't be developing them.

He's actually a really nice bloke.

I've emailed him a couple of times and he has always written back. He is a really approachable to his fans on his forum.

Hope this goes well for him.

There are other MMORPG that are succesful apart of WoW.

For example, RF Online has 1 million of user only in Asia (it´s going to come soon to west). Guild Wars is pretty succesful too, then you have Ragnarok and Lineage that are huge in Asia as well. Even a game like Eve Online it´s quite succesful (at its own scale).

MMO is a good business, but you need a really good team and a better support team post launchment.

You know, I was on the bandwagon of making fun of JR a long time ago, but now I just feel sorry for him.

Stevie Case was never really that hot. She looked much worse than Romero's wife before she had all the work done. Very plain Jane back when she beat him in that deathmatch. When she did the Playboy spread it was hard to tell that it was the same woman at all.

I'll take his new wife over Killcreek, thank you.

Haven't seen his new wife at all. Was there some internet story where she was photographed?

Never mind, found her. She's ok. Looks like he's robbing the cradle though. 21 years old? Wow.

Yeah, she's young. But find pics of Killcreek back when she first came to be known on the net, and she's not as cute as his current wife imho. She got all fake and plastic later on, but was still not that hot to me.

I agree. Fake sucks IMO. Our whole culture is built up around deception. No one is ever happy with who they are it seems.

WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT JOHN ROMERO ANYMORE

can someone help me out?
I feel the same way. People are just all over this guy just because he made one game (called Doom).

It's just sad to see Romero's recent track record. You'd think he had gotten back into the saddle by joining Midway to work on some quality titles, but instead he spent his stint there working on the steaming pile that is Gauntlet Seven Sorrows.

God Romero, Did you forget how to make games or something?

I don't really like or dislike Romero, but to say people are all over him because he made Doom leaves out the whole fiasco of what happened after he left iD. The gamin press built him up to god-like satus, and hyped up Ion Storm as the second coming, and Romero and his team couldn't deliver the goods. Esepcially Romero and Diakatana. Then there is the whole "Romero is going to make you his bitch" advertisement, which wasn't his idea by most accounts, but still rings hollow in gamers ears. So after all the hype, and delays, everything can be forgiven if the game delivers. Which it didn't.

And Mana, thanks for the pic of Killcreek. I rest my case.

First thing I thought when I saw the title of this thread...

Too bad Romero's name tarnishes everything that the Ion Storm label is attached to... Deus Ex was a very fine game.

John Romero plays the Dreamcast and is, therefore, better than you.

Which is why so many people did their best to differentiate between Ion Storm and Ion Storm Austin after Deus Ex's release.

Romero's hair almost always brings a smile to my face.
