Variety reports that Fox 2000 has set John Woo ("Paycheck") to direct and produce He-Man, a live-action film based on the characters in Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" line of action figures. Adam Rifkin will adapt the screenplay.

Originally made into an animated series in 1983, the property was also adapted into a live-action film in 1987 called Masters of the Universe, which starred Dolph Lundgren as the hero and Frank Langella as Skeletor.

He-Man began life as Prince Adam, the hybrid of an Earthling and an Eternian. At the age of 18, he was taken to Castle Grayskull, where Adam received super powers. He-Man has a sidekick in the form of a tiger, Battle Cat, and a deadly enemy, Skeletor.

Woo is also attached to direct The Rock in the video game adaptation "Spy-Hunter" for Universal Pictures.

Let's hope it has as much camp appeal as the '87 version.

Yeah, he's attached as producer to several struggling projects.

But I think this is the first directing announcement since Spy Hunter.

I think it is sad the kind of career he has now, the go-to guy for commercial pics, but maybe eventually (if any of these hit) he'll be able to make Land of Destiny...

Oh please, the first Mission Impossible was crap anyway. John Woo just made it look good relative to the absolute trash that was MI2.

But yeah, John Woo is complete crap. He got lucky with a few movies, but he's produced so much crap since then that to call him a good director now would be sheer insanity.

The first MI was not crap, it actually featured a very intricate and complicated story/plot that was smartly unravelled.

He fucking tarnished that franchise with the pulp shit that was the second movie. I hope they go back to the roots for the third.

Also, what has he done since then? Paycheck? Hulk? Blech.

It's true.

John Woo does rather suck. What was the last good movie he made, anyway?

There was some guy at a barbecue party I was at that was going on about how great John Woo was and how American Beauty sucked. I wanted to slam him, but it wasn't proper etiquette.

Any new He-Man movie MUST, AS A REQUIREMENT keep Frank Langella as Skeletor. He absolutely owned that part in the '87 movie and was (along with Meg Foster as Evil-Lyn) one of the most redeeming qualities of the film.

Etiquette's sorta looks similar to etoilate, so yeah, it wouldn't have suited you. Ee-twaila! :/

Best Speech EVAR!

People of Eternia! I stand before the Great Eye of the galaxy. Chosen by destiny by the powers of Greyskull! This inevitable moment will transpire before your eyes, even as He-Man himself bears witness to it. Now. I, Skeletor, am Master of the Universe! YES! Yes... I feel it, the power... fills me. Yes, I feel the universe within me! I am... I am a part of the cosmos! The power flows... Flows through me! Of what consequence are you now? This planet, these people. They are NOTHING to me! The universe is power! Real, unstoppable POWER! and I am that force! I am that power! KNEEL BEFORE YOUR MASTER! Fool! you are no longer my EQUAL! I am more than man! MORE THAN LIFE! I... am... a... GOD! Now. You... will... KNEEEEEL! KNEEEEL!

Fortunately, none of this information is true. Woo will not direct He-Man or Spy Hunter or Rainbow Six. Metroid is a possibility but since it is merely under his production company, Lion Rock, it could be directed by anyone.

John Woo's next film will be a return to his HK roots - and a return to form.

Sorry, but as much as I'd like to believe otherwise, this is from Variety:

It's true. Whether the movie ever gets made is another matter entirely, though.

John Woo = box office poison. He Man will wear a cape and have doves and flames all going wild in slow-mo. Probably another 40 minute movie artificially lengthened to 2 hours through he abuse of slow-mo. One insanely over the top stunt after another tied together with a plot that was probably scribbled on the back of a napkin...by a 5 year old. That's Woo's MO. Pushing out crap after crap, only to be fellated by his fans who thought Face/Off was better than the overhyped crap is really was. Yeah, I went there. Face/Off is overrated, much like everything else Woo's done. I'll never forgive him for that abortion he called M:I2. PEACE.

I can’t believe people actually list Face/Off as a good John Woo flick. That film is a tota joke.

I don't know about anyone else but the lists I usually create of movies I enjoy have little to nothing to do with whether the movie was deemed universally "good" or "bad".

If you ask me, Woo's problem is that his signature devices have become such a part of the action vocabulary that he's no longer unique.

Just what the fuck is up with the Face/Off hate?
Awesome film if you ask me, and great acting performances by both Cage and Travolta.
I agree with the factual opinion that his work has gone downhill from there though.

I agree. And not only has he been copied, he's been owned at his own game.
