Sony are teh ripoff kings.

90M+ (probably closer to 135M or so) * average cost of $25 = $2.2Billion @ retail (or ~$3.4 Billion)

Anybody know the wholesale costs on these suckers?

And if these things have put say an extra billion dollars of profit into Sony's coffers and they move over to a non-proprietary (Flash/SD) media or even Memory Stick Pro which can't possibly have anywhere near the insane profitability of these cards...

One of Sony's biggest profit centers is going bye-bye.

Hmmm...all the more reason for Sony to be hesitant for a HDD. Now with MS not really pushing it next, it's definately means Sony is not even going to give a damn for HDD.

Doesn't really matter. Unless they require Memory Stick pro, but as I said, even then, it won't come close to providing the PS2 memory card profitability. They only get a licensing fee for the cheap 3rd party cards and that's a pittance compared to before.

not to mention that SCEI doesn't even profit off the Memory Stick line, let alone manufacture them.

They're only manufacturing the 32mb one packaged with the psp.

1 PS2 8 MEG MEMORY CARD SONY Oct-00 $24
10 PS2 RED/BLUE MEMORY 2 PK SONY 2-Aug $39

Why do people not buy the Red/Blue 2 pack? It's $10 cheaper in the long run, jeez.

By far, the majority are sold with the initial console sales as people don't think they'll need another at the time.

Given the PS2 HW sales this year, it's like a factor of 10 above any other peripheral

Jan-05 490,002
Feb-05 537,904
Mar-05 491,880
Apr-05 332,119
May-05 273,596
Jun-05 355,000
Jul-05 260,000

That's a ton of memory cards.

Well I for one am glad they are supporting MS insted of the crap proprietary cards. Hell I was even considering getting a Sony digital camera so all my stuff would use the same cards.

(naw.. canon digital all the way!)

I just wonder on what they plan on doing to make up for this loss of revenue >_<

And when we look at the tie-ratio, most of them won't need another one.

If Sony wanted to they can just advertise/push forward the 32 mb Memory stick pro just like with their current memory sticks for PS3. There are bigger memory cards for PS2, but people pick up the official ones more often, I'm sure they can get that same mentality going for MS despite more alternatives.

The tie ratio is 10 (expected to go up to 12 or so, if not higher) and that's stretching a memory card, IMO. Of course, that's if you don't delete saves, which from what I've heard many people either don't do or don't know how to do.

Just buy another memory card :lol

I'll take any bet that the PS3 will only allow saves on MemStick Duos. Sony's license fees on those are very healthy I'm sure.

SC, do you have the actual unit sales for these accessories? Can you post them?

Lots of games clock in under 500 KB for their save files, so it really depends on what kind of games are in a PS2 owner's library.

I agree. It's simply a revenue stream that Sony can't afford to lose. Although, it's not nearly as profitable as PS2 memory cards. You can buy a 64MB MS Duo card for ~$10 now.

I always wanted to see the accessories sales......

.....but not any without the Gameboy Player! ;_;

It has to rank in the top 20 at least right?
