Fucking awesome is all I have to say.
Can tell that whether you like it or not, Miyazaki has embraced the technical sides of CG and immersed them perfectly and seamlessly with traditional animation. The castle itself is a wonder to behold and just some of the way that magic is implemented makes it all so believeable but so fantasy as well.
Music was well done as usual. When I first heard the Image Album I was wondering where Hisaishi was taking it but usually the Image Album's of each one he has pumped out changes by the time production finishes with only a theme or two still in the finished product. The soundtrack reminded me of Porco Rosso mixed with Takeshi Kitano's Hana Bi.
And I know that it's based on the book, but I haven't read it so whether or not the ending is the exact same, who knows.. but it was a really nice ending. Kind of different to your usual Miyazaki ending which kind of gave it a breath of fresh air.
Didn't really want to pin-point what other Miyazaki films it was like whilst watching it, but all I can say is anyone who loved Porco Rosso, Spirited Away and maybe a dash of Laputa/Nausicaa will adore Howl's.
