CANNES, France — Kanye West will debut a short film titled “Cruel Summer” at the Cannes Film Festival.

The rapper announced Friday that he’ll present the film on Wednesday at the French festival. West and his creative collective DONDA will screen the “short art film” out of competition in Cannes.

West’s press release promises “a fusion of short film and art installation” and an “immersive seven-screen experience.” It will remain open to the public for two days following its premiere.

West has previously directed music videos for his music, including 2010’s “Runaway.”

Edit: Also, the G.O.O.D. music compilation will be called cruel summer.

This film is going to get so much bad press but the one accompanying MBDTF (an already incredible album) was a visual feast, even if it was essentially meaningless.

College Dropout - 808's Kanye no longer exists. We have this shell that looks like Ye, but unfortunately has no idea how to make good music. He had bits of that old self in MBDTF, but Watch The Throne obliterated any traces that were left.

MBDTF is his best album. I want more of that.

runaway was fantastic. kanye is the closest thing we have to another MJ in terms of his ambition and contribution to the music video art form.

why would i be joking? just because his media image is one of over-reaching arrogance doesn't mean his actual work is invalidated. runaway speaks for itself, it's excellent.

I like the MBDFTDSDFS short film he put together.

Hoping is is similar in eccentricity and delivers another album in kind.

Then again, it's really hard for the voice of a generation of this generation to create three indisputable classics (808s, MBDFTDSDFS).

Kanye is intolerable to me now and I can't get into his instrumentals anymore. He's a shitty person and a terrible rapper but I could ignore that for the sake of his production but now it's just meh to me. 808s was by far his best album.

when I read cruel summer, I always think of the original karate kid. Daniele riding his bike to school with his sunglasses on.

Meh. I thought it was pretentious garbage.

Aw man, I loved it. The central ballet scene is so much more compelling and exciting than anything in Black Swan. I watch it so many times, and I never get tired of it: it’s striking, catchy, fun, erotic, and constantly charming in its exuberance. It's not the most coherent thing in the world, but I think there's room for dream-like films like this.

Well he's a good composer/producer and a bad rapper, so as long as he doesn't try to act in his movies he may have a nice film career ahead of him.
