When you're finished with the Kyoto arch, move right on to the manga. Anime just turns into several different shades of shitty after that.

This series only has a great reputation because of the OVA's and the Kyoto Arc. The rest is mediocre at best.
I bought all the TV ep DVDs and was really disappointed with the arcs after the Kyoto Arc...
Go out and buy GITS: SAC

anyone that told you to watch all of kenshin is a moron

Kenshin is one of my all time favorite animes, but that is indeed because the only episodes I recognize as true kenshin episodes ar the kyoto arc and the ovas.

I even have a little plan I put people on if I want them to watch kenshin.
I have them watch the first little Aoshi arc in the beginning as a good introduction of characters. Then they are to watch the kyoto arc up thourhg the 2nd to last episode... I think its episode 61. Then they are to watch the ovas.

That the proper way to watch kenshin =)

Ya know, even with the crap-tastic filler episodes in the first part of Kenshin (the pirate thing and the fargin' sumo wrestler episode for example) I think that watching the first season all the way through gives you some sense of the characterization; what Kenshin is like now, how exactly Kaoru and Sanosuke tick, etc. This just makes it that much more meaningful when Kenshin leaves at the beginning of the Kyoto arc.

Oh, and I was one of the ones that watched Trust and Betrayal before even digging into Kenshin. Some may argue, but it wasn't a bad way of going into the series.

It's been a while....Can someone remind me what the Kyoto Arc was?

I watched all 95 eps. And I agree the quality slipped some. I have the Samurai X stuff coming via netflix soon... What others are there on DVD worth watching.

BTW, my other favorite animes are:

Last Exile
Witch Hunter Robin
Escaflowne
Evangellion
Ippo

ok .. I'm new to Anime..

so can somone explain to me what does OVA means ?

I have the whole 95 episodes of Kenshin

OVA is Original Video Animation (also can be OAV, but I like saying OVA better.) Basically they're the equivalent of straight-to-video, but they're (usually) not shoddy cash-ins a la Disney STV releases.

What you watched, Trust and Betrayal, were the first two OVA's (split into two parts each.)

Oh, and the Kyoto arc is from about episode 28 (right after the pirates) up until I think like episode 68 or something. Basically the stuff with Shishio ends, and then there's maybe a couple of reflective episodes which are great. Then the crapola starts up in high gear. You could try watching the rest of the series but it really goes downhill.

Even though the episodes after the Kyoto arc aren't as good as the rest of the series, I still enjoyed them most of them. There were a couple that were really cool (the Christian arc especially). Also, I find some of the episodes before the Kyoto arc to be better than the Kyoto arc itself.

So basically, consensus here is that after Shishio, it starts to slide? I kinda agree with that.

So OVA basically means there were no books on this particular story. The 95 eps are all animated versions of the books?

Trust & Betrayal are part of the Samurai X series, no? And there are 4 parts?

Sorry for all the questions, but the chronology is about as hard to follow as X-men comics.

More like it's hard to top Shishio. If the Christian arc was before the Kyoto arc, it would've been received better.

Well, in Kenshin's case the first OVA (Trust and Betrayal) is based on flashbacks to Kenshin's past from the manga and anime. The second OVA contains a condensed version of the revenge arc.

Trust & Betrayal are part of the Samurai X series, no? And there are 4 parts?

Forget Sony's stupid naming of the series. Samurai X is the name used by the ADV releases, although thankfully you can reverse the covers. The movie, and two OVA's are under that name, while the 95 episodes of the TV series are under RK.

Sorry for all the questions, but the chronology is about as hard to follow as X-men comics.

In terms of time line, it's something like this: T&B OVA -> TV series -> movie -> 2nd OVA

Excellent. Thanks for spelling it out for me.
1 more question....movie = "The Motion Picture" & 2nd OVA = "Reflection"?

I watched the TV eps in order. Now I wanna see the rest.

yes. and keep in "The Motion Picture" isnt as good as the 2 OVAs. And the OVAS themselves are VERY different from the TV series. art style is a lot different, the tones are much more moody and somber; its decidedly a serious anime (in stark contrast to the TV series w/ its goofy parts), animation and effects are superb overall.

Yeah, it's Trust & Betrayal OVA -> TV series -> The Motion Picture -> Reflections OVA

T&B originally came out on 2 DVDs (one for Trust, one for Betrayal), but then ADV released a version with all 4 episodes on one DVD, and in widescreen. Only problem is that widescreen here is simply the 4:3 version with bits from the top and bottom chopped off, making it the worse version. But it's cheaper (since it's one 1 DVD) and I'm not sure if the older versions are still available. In the Japanese version of T&B there was some text explaining some important event that was left out of the American version (the 2 DVD one). I don't know if they translated it and put it in the 1 DVD version or not.

Reflections comes on one DVD, and I think is 2 different length episodes (although the overall length is close to T&B).
