Kinnikuman is severely underrated

So lately I've reading this shonen manga called Kinnikuman, which many know is hugely popular in Japan. However despite a lot of anime/manga fans being aware of it's existence, the lack of availability really hurts the readership or the viewership of this anime/manga series. While Kinnikkuman Nisei got dubbed into Ultimate Muscle for the West, and that was mildly popular in it's day, the original Kinnikuman series really doesn't see all that much recognition. However that isn't really anyone's fault for this by any means other than the various companies having no desire to localize or release this series abroad in English.

So what is Kinnikuman about? Well I'll tell you.

Kinnikuman is the wrestling manga staring Chojin (Superman) competing in various battles inside the ring. It stars the titular character Kinnikuman, who begins the manga being a complete parody of Ultraman, as well as the various other Superstar Chojin such as Terryman, Kevin Mask, Ramneman, and all sorts of crazy characters. So what sets Kinnikuman apart from other shonen series? Well aside from the wrestling bouts, Kinnikuman is notably extremely weird and strange. In fact,
one arc features the bad guys LITERALLY stealing character's friendship inside a box full of voodoo dolls.
There's all sorts of crazy shit and with every chapter something stranger and stranger happens. There's also a very strange dichotomy between the extreme violent and the gag manga writing the series is known for.

Why is it underrated? Well underrated might not be fully accurate to describe Kinnikuman, but it definitely doesn't get enough respect from a Western audience. A lot of that respect constantly gets shifted to Dragonball, which was a highly influential manga in it's own right with series like Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, and etc., but people treat Dragonball as the very first long-running shonen to introduce common shonen tropes we see today such as:

  • Power levels (as in, actual numbers to determine strength)
  • Characters dying and coming back over and over again
  • Long-Running arcs
  • Fights lasting over several chapters
  • Main character that is oblivious to his surroundings, but gets serious when he needs to be
  • Tournament arcs
  • Supporting cast actively being fighters or characters that rival the main character in strength
What's notable about these things is that none of these tropes and elements to shonen manga were ever started by Dragonball. They were created, and popularized by Kinnikuman first. In fact, it could be argued without TOEI's anime version of Kinnikuman being a huge success, TOEI might've never animated Dragonball and in turn we would've seen a very different course of history with Dragonball's worldwide popularity.

That isn't to say other elements like the hotblooded hero which largely comes from Mazinger Z wasn't also influential, but people in the West like to give credit to Dragonball that in fact should go to Kinnikuman.

Not only did Kinnikuman start and establish the fundamental tropes and structure of modern shonen manga today, but as a story it's full of really cool dynamic action full of fun moments, badass and brutal shit, manly tears, and the works. If you like Fist of the North Star, believe it or not Kinnikuman is not all that different aside from the inclusion of gag manga content. Kinnikuman can be just as brutal and manly as Fist of the North Star in it's strongest moments, and the wrestling stuff is pretty neat especially if you're a fan of wrestling already. Also the humor in it is really really immature and stupid as well (fart jokes, and it's sequel Kinnikuman Nisei is full of outrageous sex jokes)

WORD OF WARNING!!

Now, there is a bit of racism and strangeness with some elements of Kinnikuman. Like most classic and older manga...the depiction of Africans frequently uses the typical blackface cartoon look, popularized by Osamu Tezuka. Though there is never any malicious intent with any of it despite the racist caricature, similar to Toriyama's Mr. Popo and similar. However the main focus isn't necessarily on this, but rather Brockenman and his son Brocken Jr.

WEpfOiM.jpg

Brockenman was originally a Nazi villain that was quickly defeated by the debuting Ramenman (he was ripped in half in the manga, turned into ramen in the anime, lol). His son, Brocken Jr. (pictured above), donning a similar look and is implied to be a Nazi himself despite never displaying any of the beliefs. Also, Brocken Jr. is one of the main heroes of the series.

If such things offend you deeply then Kinnikuman can sometimes be very hard to read or watch, but with all the other zaniness going on in the series someone being a Nazi is practically normal compared to some of the shit that happens in the series, so it's best not to take it literally outside of using a Nazi design aesthetic. Brockenman and Brocken Jr. are more about using the Nazi theme than actually being Nazi themself, and no sort of racism is displayed by them by any means.
_______________

Now I'll end this with a really sick piece of art showcasing the main Chojin of Kinnikuman:

It really is. Read through it for the first time last year and enjoyed it immensely.

If anything, I felt the most awkward thing about Brocken Jr. was how he and Ramenman "dropped" their feud over time. I never knew the anime gave him that pale of a color scheme, though.

Love Kinnikuman. Robin Mask is my favorite. I completely love how almost all of Suguru's friends started off as his enemies.

By contrast, I enjoyed Kinnikuman Nisei a lot less. Mantaro is a shit character and pales in comparison to his father.

Glad to see Yudetamago continue with Suguru's story instead of the supposed part 3 focusing on Mayumi (although it would've been cool, the novelty would've worn off quick)

We got the original anime dubbed here in Latin America. It was both hilarious and super exciting and ran laps around DBZ.

Once the dude gets serious and starts fighting for realsies. Got damn

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Always wanted to get into this series, but like Hajime no Ippo, its volume daunts me

I remember reading it when I was a kid. One of the older kids in the neighborhood had a collection. Some of the battles were crazy, like people getting poles through their chests and getting their limbs chopped off.

It's probably one of the first Shonen with a major thematic switch as well, it basically abandons the Ultraman-parody elements after the first few initial chapters, with one minor reprisal between two major arcs, and then never looks back.

To be honest it's really fun to read but also a bit exhausting since it never really lets up once the major Tournaments begin, it's basically back to back, and at times I sort of missed the lighter elements from earlier in the manga.

I also realize another "thing" it started was a group of villains appearing in black cloaks and then later revealing themselves, probably simply due to the fact the artist hadn't decided what they'd look like. One of the teams in YuYu Hakusho does this for example.

I recall Brockenman is a straight-up Nazi, but Brocken Jr. wears the outfit to honor his father but rejects his beliefs.

am I crazy or was there a bizarre muscle-bound-wii game that had some viral gameplay footage about this IP? I remember it being really outragous even by japanese standards

Fun fact: most of those are designed by the readers. I thought that was a pretty clever move

It's one of the most influential battle shonen, if not they most when it comes to tropes.

Yeah it is one of those "classics" that shaped up today's Shonen Manga styles.
And a few years ago author started to continue the original series (not Ultimate Muscle) too.

IIRC almost all major characters (including Robin, Wars, Buffalo, Ramen, Akuma Shogun and such) were designed by the readers except for Terry.
I think Suguru's family were made up by author (since they existed from very first chapters) but that's about it.

It's great. Friggin great. Wish Toei or the other licensing companies would give it another shot with online streams. That likely won't happen, but I'd really appreciate them for it!

This sounds like something I honestly need to read at some point. Really sounds like one of the foundational battle shonen. 4Kids Ultimate Muscle just turned me off to the property I think.

Do the anime series cover both the original and sequel manga content completely?

Yeah it is one of those "classics" that shaped up today's Shonen Manga styles.

How does that work? Does it just disregard Ultimate Muscle or is it just like there are further adventures that weren't shown? Does it ever contradict Ultimate Muscle?

Muscle March was an original IP on WiiWare.

Yeah I think this series would benefit very highly from a remake anime and Crunchyroll syndication. Would get a lot of Western exposure to the series as well as giving the anime a fresh coat of paint (also, the recent continuation of the manga hasn't been adapted yet).

Gamecube game was ace

I LOVED that game. It was made by the same group that did the N64 wrestling games (WCW/NWO World tour through WWF No Mercy).

I really would have liked to have seen a Ring of Destruction game with that same engine.

I got the whole run of Kinnikuman and Kinnikuman Second Generation (still need some of that tag team story). It is so weird to go back and read those early manga volumes when it was a Super Hero parody and there was minimal wrestling influence.

I tried and the beginnings of him eating Gyudon, growing to fight monsters, and flying by his farts is pretty terrible. However, it changed after that into a crazy violent fantasy fighting series. Sadly I don't think you can skip ahead too far to get to that or some things wont make sense, but its definitely a show that goes places you would never have predicted from its directionless beginnings. I think when Ramen man appeared, killed a man, turned them into noodles and ate them is when the series swerved hard. After that fights got violent, overpowered, and insanely bizarre and good.

I recommend it.

It still freaks me a bit out when you learn about Kinnikuman's biggest secret...

That's not his real face, but a mask.

There's like a 25 year gap between Kinnikuman and Kinnikuman II/ultimate muscle

The continuation is depicting adventures within that period.

The story continues after Suguru officially become the King. The Perfect Chojin pack strikes again and this time Devil Chojins stand up against them, but Suguru and his mates join the chaos too. Even Golden mask (Goldman = Akuma Shogun) and Silver Mask ( = SIlverman) joins the fight and their detailed backgrounds are revealed even further.

At this moment nothing contradicts between current series and Ultimate Muscle, except for the setting of Akuma Shogun.

I love me some Kinnikuman, though I must admit: I've never read the manga. My knowledge of Kinnikuman comes from the PS2 Ultimate Muscle Generations game. Robin Mask is my favorite character in that series; he's the Piccolo of Kinnikuman, only Robin Mask is much more badass than Piccolo.

I will read the manga one day, and perhaps watch the old Kinnikuman anime.

Reading the first volumes when the manga was just a parody series and then suddenly get on with the whole wrestling gimmicks is such a crazy ride. Still need to finish reading this.

All I remember of this show is the intro and that there's a man with a butt for a face and a man who is a toilet. The toilet man pile drives the butt man into his bowl and flushes.

Seen few episode back in the day, a few of my friends where pretty crazy about it

Opening pretty cool

Dub intro that use to air on cartoon network

been meaning watch the anime in subbed form for a while back but it's pretty hard to find.

The distinction here is that this series is Ultimate Muscle, or Kinnikuman Nisei. Kinnikuman is the prequel and (imo) better series that follows the original generation referenced in Ultimate Muscle.

Try watching/reading the original Kinnikuman.

I'm a huge fan.

I used to have a bunch of the figures as a kid, but had no idea what they were or where we got them from.

Later when ultimate muscle showed up on tv, I eventually made the connection and became a fan of the manga and GameCube game.

They later, rather silently, released a follow up game for PS2 called Galactic Wrestling I think, and I don't think it was even branded on the front as kinnikuman but the game had a crap ton of characters.

They eventually released a couple packs of new figures in the style of the originals.. A friend and I scoured every store in a 30 mile radius to find them and eventually we did. I don't think the figures were very successful this time, because only a few packs came out.

When I lived in Japan, I discovered a new manga series that didn't come out in the US, and still hasn't, I believe. It had time traveling and seemed really cool. Would love to be able to read it in its entirety.

Hope they try to bring it back again. Always love it. Ah, and I'd really like to watch the original anime and read the original manga.

I remember the sequel

Meet the bad dudes from outer space
Here to bodyslam the human race
Wrestlers race to our defence
With strength and speed and....Flatulence!?

Lots of fun.

They screwed up the ending though
In the manga Kevin wins, but in the anime, Kid wins - I guess they wanted a "Happy ending" since they weren't animating the last arc
.

Huge Nickleback Fan
I like it and used to read it when it was published in my country, though unfortunately, it stopped around Kinnikuman becoming a champion for superhero tournament, but failed to receive the trophy or medal due to him going back to Japan to rescue one of his fan.

The figure line is/was so incredible

Maaaaaan this is pure magic, really takes me back. As a kid didn't even know what they were or where they came from, they seemed to just come out of thin air (and were lost just as easily) and I loved them. Every time I run into them again on the internet I'm a half second away from going on a mad ebay binge.

I loved Ultimate Muscle for its unabashed cheesiness. When i checked the original manga i was taken aback by how violent it could be-dudes straight murdering each other in the ring.

Read some chapters, and am already enjoying this. I assume shit hasn't got real yet, but it has already been pretty entertaining. I only recently got into Ultraman, so all the references to the Ultra brothers has been pretty funny. Same with all the Toho Kaiju the author seems to love lol. Kinnikuman beating out King Ghidorah for the the worst dude of the year was fucking hilarious.

I've been a fan of Kinnikuman since the 80's. Love the manga/show. Also it was becasue of the GC Kinnikuman game that I created my name. RoryDropkick was one of my CAW names. :)

Absolutely, I started reading Kinnikuman in the 90's and it gets progressively better and more insanse. Look past the arc retreads, just the character relations and interactions are hilarious. Brocken had me spitting coffee, Terry had me dead at how vile Kinnikuman could be on a good day, it's just comedy done well.

That's what I want out of an anti-hero, not angst and edge but a heart to do good even as they're unwilling to.

Edit: Just want to say, Buffaloman is that BRO. Serious respect, fuck Terry as besty, that goes to Buffalo.
