KOTOR 2 Restoration Project beta is out

KOTOR 2 is very poorly optimized. I had crazy frame drops playing it on PC even though my PC is more than powerful enough to play it.

That makes no sense. If your PC is getting frame drops, then your PC isn't powerful enough to play it.

I had everything on the highest settings and it was smooth for a lot of the time, even during the huge battles. It would randomly drop frames though and it happened semi-often. Believe me, my PC is powerful enough to play it.

I'm on Vista though so that may have something to do with it.

Shit, I would looooooooove to try this out. I haven't even been able to finish KOTOR 2 or go back to KOTOR because I can't effing figure out how to get the games to run on a Vista machine with a dual core CPU without it crashing every 2 fucking minutes.

ARG.

You can actually get around that by setting the game to run with one core by doing something with task manager, which should solve most of the crashing issues. If I can remember how to do it, I'll edit it back into the post.

Is it by setting the affinity of the task?

Starting my play through now.
Having beat the original 4-5 times already I'm really interested to see the restored content.

Yes, works on Sim City 4, but haven't tried it on KOTOR, or KOTOR 2. For those that don't know: Control + Alt +Delete, bring up task manager, right click on application (in this case KOTOR 2) and choose set affinity, and click core 0 (I think, typically the first one)

Hopefully that makes it run more stable on dual core computers

Its sooo hard (tedious) to get through Telos. After that its smooth sailing though.

Still no impressions of how the additional content is, or is everyone waiting until it gets out of beta?

Check their official forums from the first post if you need to whip it out so badly. The Kotaku article made site traffic jump by three or four times so there should be plenty of impressions available.

I'm not really understanding this. How do you restore cut content?

game had a Release date. Lucasarts said well fuck guys we want the game out now. So lots of stuff was never finsihed but left on gamediscs

Sorry to bump up an old thread but thought I'd share my thoughts on this as I've been playing it.

It's excellent! I hadn't played it since it first released on the Xbox and my feeling on it at the time were: It's good but it feels like the plug was pulled when the game was 80% complete. Story lines just ended and the game comes to what feels like an abrupt end.

As I replay it with the restoration patch, I've come across countless moments that I don't remember from the original...I thought it might be my memory failing me but in actuality it was restored content. I'm almost done with my play through (at the HK factory right now) and I've got nothing but praise for the work done. My only complaint is that there is no prelude to showing up at the HK factory...It could use a scene showing HK-47 sneaking away to explore on his own but that is my only complaint.

By the looks of it, I'm 90% done and I'll post my final impressions once I am. But in the meantime if you're on the fence about downloading it, do it...It's really wonderful and makes a good game great!

Also, in case anyone is interested, I'm playing it on a recently built Windows 7 x64 and it crashes quite a bit...If you play it there, save often!

You might be able to fix this with the previously mentioned fix (setting the process affinity to 1 CPU core) or the Vista DLL fix.

Will wait for the final release, but I'm glad this project was picked up by people able to get it done.

Yeah. KotOR II was never very stable on XP and its worse on Vista. Hopefully the fix community gets it to a Bloodlines state where it runs well.

Speaking of Bloodlines, I played that recently with the latest unofficial patch, made it maybe half an hour into the game, to the combat tutorial part of the tutorial, and then promptly discovered that my character had no fists. Understandably, I couldn't fight my adversary and continue the tutorial. I cannot imagine what this game was like when it was first released.

I actually didn't have problems with the unpatched game back then, except one or two optional fetch quests that wouldn't trigger.

So I've been holding off on playing kotorII for the first time until one of these restore projects was finished enough that the game will be fully satisfying and have a proper conclusion (since I heard the original game does not).

Did anyone finish this? Is the conclusion good now? Should I play or keep waiting until a further build?

Wait until it is finished I would say.

As for the conclusion... well... let me put it this way

They are able to restore a LOT of the content in the game, some of the planets that got cut I doubt will ever be restored because of how they patched it. The game as a whole is a lot better.

The cut endings I don't think we will ever see unless someone at Obsidian "leaks" it for the mod community... (They did try to patch it themselves but weren't allowed to :( )

Lucasarts is on my shit list forever for this whole thing. Especially not allowing them to fix stuff like the ending post release, probably cause of the Xbox version and all those people would feel jipped Lucasarts kicked it out the door.

I just got to find a copy of KotOR II - I really wish Steam would release it (they already have KotOR available).

I'll definitely pick this up when it officially releases.

This is great news. Never played Kotor 2 and just started playing 1 again after all those years and it holds up really well. Hopefully they will release 2 on Steam soon.

It is ridiculous. Obsidian was going to patch it which cost Lucasarts NOTHING in the end to release the finished game.

At first I hated Obsidian for making a great but unfinished game until I learned about the debacle and now... well I am still trying to figure out if Alpha Protocol will give me motion sickness but I hope not because Obsidian deserves their fair shot already!

I recently finished playing through kotorII with this restoration package. I had never played through the game before, so I don't have any basis for comparison, but I felt that the ending was pretty awkward and nonsensical. If the ending has been improved by this, it hasn't been improved much.

Now, that being said, the game was still excellent overall, and a ton of fun. I don't know if anyone is ever going to be able to fix the ending, so it might be worth playing it as it is.

One final note, I had a couple of problems with bugs (skipping dialogue and flying swoop bikes), which may or may not be fixed in the final release.

Why would Alpha Protocol give you motion sickness? The reason I ask is because FPS games (namely ones in the past, in the N64 era) have given me motion sickness and some modern FPS games have come close to it - and I know Borderlands does in fact give me motion sickness as well.

So, to summarize, why would Alpha Protocol give you motion sickness? Is there something in the game that makes it more likely than other games? I hope not because I really want to play an Obsidian game that's not hampered by a publisher like LucasArts.

Anyway, I hope Obsidian one day is able to come back and release the unfinished stuff on KotOR 2 that they could have patched but LA didn't let them or maybe they'll even get a chance to patch and re-release the game themselves. One of the side effects of TOR's success is my personal hope that it will create enough attention to the KotOR series in general for their to be a rerelease of the KotOR games (namely the second one fixed).

I am prone to seizures, Mass Effect had me convulsing

Oh, sorry to hear you have that. I am susceptible to motion sickness, but usually it's FPS games that give me that problem sometimes. I was worried that Alpha Protocol might play like Borderlands which was horrible (that was the first time I got motion sickness in a while, although I think I may have gotten it once while playing the original MW).

Even if there is a final release, there will still be fixes to come for a long time. Look at Bloodlines.

Well, the ending is still fairly open ended because it's the "ESB" of the "Trilogy". A lot of what was added is a lot of party storyline stuff that works out their character arcs and gives more meaning to the party influence system.

An ending is a massive improvement over no ending, but the real ending will never be restored unless Obsidian goes back to the game, which is unlikely. LA seems to want to forget it exists. I also could be that you missed things. Lots of valuable info is said in passing or subtly hinted at. Plus half the characters telling you the important shit are known liars, which is great. Its one of the few games outside of IPL's games that has the balls to lie and tell half truths.

Another reason I like Obsidian, you actually have to judge characters. Alpha Protocol seems to be more "behind the back" than "over the shoulder" which means I might just be able to pull this one off :)

Going over the list of additions from the mod, I can see where you're coming from. They added a lot of great stuff that really helped develop the characters. But it terms of the narrative, the ending is still pretty flimsy, even considering the fact that they were setting up for a sequel.

It's certainly possible that I missed out on some things, or had difficulty putting other things together. But certain elements of the finale are so incomplete that they don't make any sense.

Serious Finale Spoilers:
Why does everyone split up on the final planet? Where the heck did Bao-Dur go? Didn't the Ebon Hawk fall into a pit? If so, how did we manage to fly away on it? Sure, I have questions about Kreia's motivations, but something like that I might be able to understand if I work at it. The rest? Not so much.

Bao-Dur was assumed to actually have died by that point. That's why you see a hologram of him, but since they never finished the actual ending, you get no clue whether he did or didn't die

I'm not sure if it's been posted already, but if you're curious, there is a fantastic Let's Play thread on KotOR 2. Ties everything in the game very very nicely.

I'll link it here: http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/KOTOR%202/

KotOR 2 without a patch = depressingly confusing

KotOR 2 ever patched properly by Obsidian = >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> KotOR 1 (I want the cut endings and the missing planet and etc. :( )

I didn't find it all that confusing.

so for posterity, the final answer (at this point) is: its as done as its looking to be, sans a few areas, so play it now? if we lose some content, i think i can make peace with that more than a conclusive ending, which has now been said to not be (realistically) expected, just read the linked thread for pieces. am i getting it right, or is the remaining content understood to be worth waiting for in the long run? its been this long, i dont really mind putting it off a bit more for things central to a plot ive been told numerous times was fantastic till the final few hours or so.
