Unplug the PC and pack everything – 30 minutes
Load everything into the car, buy frozen pizza and icetea and head to the buddy’s place – 45 minutes
Unload everything and set it up – 30 minutes
Wait until everyone arrives – 1 hour
"Who remembered to bring the switch?" -> Drive to the nearest electronics store, buy a switch and cables – 1 hour
Connect everything and test – 10 minutes
One guy still has Windows 2000, so format and install XP – 1 hour
Set up all IPs correctly, configure stuff and troubleshoot – 2 hours

By late evening, after ~7 hours, the first game finally starts.
3 hours in, the first ones get tired and go to sleep.
4 AM, sitting alone at the PC on a LAN party, playing single-player games or watching porn.

My LAN party experience in a nutshell.

we did LAN parties a ton in the 90s, but it was pretty much a necessity due to how crappy internet speeds were back then.

they became pointless when internet improved. we stopped probably around 1999 with TFC and Quake 3.
Most of us didn’t have internet in the mid-2000s, so we played a lot of CS 1.5/1.6/Source, WC3, CoD, UT, and BF1942/Vietnam/2...
Even from the mid to late 2000s, we would meet up with our 360s to play Gears of War, L4D, and Halo via system link.

Great times to game, tbh - if not the greatest.
