'Lost' @ the Box Office - Comedy is Summer's 1st Bomb

The 2009 summer movie season has it's first official bomb – the Will Ferrell comedy/TV adaptation Land of the Lost made just an estimated $7 million at the North America box office Friday in its first day of release, putting it on pace to score somewhere in the $20 range for the 3-day weekend, far below industry expectations/predictions.

With a reported production budget of $100m, Lost seems like a probable bet to have a very short box office life and likely fall far short of covering its estimated cost. The film is being soundly thrashed by critics, and while broad comedies – particularly ones starring Ferrell – are usually critic-proof and driven by the young, male demographic, one of Lost's problems is the surprise success of the Rated R comedy The Hangover, which was the #1 film on Friday with an estimated $16.5m.

A surprise critical hit and now generating positive word-of-mouth, that film will likely be the movie of choice for the male 18-49 year-old crowd until the Transformers sequel opens later this month.

Despite its Friday win, Hangover isn't a sure bet to win the weekend, however. In a full out battle of different demographics, Disney/Pixar's Up is holding up very strongly (a probably 35% or better decline), and both films are estimated to gross in the mid-$40 million range for the full weekend. The latest CGI-animated feature from Pixar is now likely to reach the $250m mark eventually.

As to other notable genre holdovers, Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell is not long for this world. The Universal film will drop to 7th place in its second weekend in release and is looking at an estimated $7-$7.5m gross for the weekend.

Terminator Salvation and Star Trek are battling it out for the 5th and 6th place slots, which is a battle that obviously favors Trek as the film opened two week's earlier. Salvation will just crack the $100m mark while Star Trek is going to finish the weekend with around $222m.

Ouch.

So did anyone see it? It looked terrible and weird. Wondering what GAF thought of it.

Plan on seeing it. Looks like stupid fun.

However, they should have done something true to the intent of the original, but with today's FX. Could have been one of the creepiest sci-fi movies in ages. Some of the concepts from the original show are pretty mind-bending.

Will Ferrell runs around and shouts all the time. Only this time it is in a prehistoric environment.

Man, I can't figure out why people don't care to see this movie.

:lol My roommate and his girlfriend just got back from seeing the movie. They said it was funny. Personally, I'm still interested! Maybe a Sunday matinee...

No way! I'm honestly shocked. I didn't think the movie looked amazing or anything, I've just gotten so use to Will Ferrell = $$$$

The Hangover is going to have amazing word of mouth. People are already quoting it on Facebook. :lol

Drag Me To Hell should have been held until October. Maybe not Halloween exactly, possibly early Oct. I just don't think many folks are in the mood for that type of movie in the summer season. Oh well, I saw it on Friday and loved it.

it was kind of strange, you'd think Ferrel + McBride would = film for adults but the idea kind of comes off as a kid movie, so there could be some confusion. I'm kind of interested in seeing it (just for the Eastbound and Down combination) but i can wait til it hits the Redbox for $0.99.

Eh, I figure I'll wait for Year One to get my kick on prehistoric comedy this summer.

I will see it because I see everything with Danny McBride in it.

The strange thing about this movie is I really can't tell who it's targeted toward. It looks like a kids' movie at a glance but with a PG-13 rating and a lot of previews showing a good deal of sex-related jokes, it seems that it just doesn't know it's target audience.

It's overadvertised imo. I was interested when I saw the first preview; but I am worn out on the movie after the past month of constant commercials, show tie-ins, interviews with the cast and exclusive first looks at scenes. I feel I have seen the movie without ever seeing it to the point I don't want to go see it at all.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that is why people are chosing to see something else instead.

The Hangover? Are you serious?

I'd rather go watch Star Trek again.
I haven't seen The Hangover yet, but, gauging by every single person I've heard's reaction (seriously, every one of them is positive, it's pretty ridiculous), yea, they're serious.

Same kind of goes for Star Trek, so your whole post is assbackwards. They're pretty much the only two movies released this year who had sequels greenlit before the films even came out, too.:lol

The commercial makes it look really bad. I heard one joke and I winced in pain.

I kinda agree. Although Rotten Tomatoes makes this movie seem decent, every trailer that I've seen of this movie makes it look incredibly dumb, IMO

"IN THE FACE!"

*roll eyes*

Honestly, part of me wants to see this. I'll probably rent it when it comes out if only for how odd it looks.

If Ebert is to be trusted, it's just a really dumb, goofball comedy that could be funny if you're in the mood for such a thing. I don't mind that too terribly.

Edit: If I'm going to see a silly comedy this summer, though, I'll see Year One.

I'll take your word on it I guess. I'll hit my friend up for free tickets and see it.
I'm excited for it. Seems like it's been building up hype pretty strongly, all the screenings and advertising had incredible responses. On paper, another Vegas film seems liek a retarded idea, but when you throw this talent into the mix, it turns out quite well, it seems.

I'm not too excited about Year One though. There is quite a lot of great talent behind that too, but I'm not a fan of "taking lame modern jokes and make them funnier by putting them in a different era context" kind of comedy. There are only so many that can really pull it off and get away with it, I don't think this will be one of them.I can guarantee it'll make more bank than Land of the Lost though.

The Hangover came out of nowhere for me. It was fucking great.

I am surprised that LotL did so poorly, though. I was in no hurry to see it, but still...

The Hangover was fucking awesome. Surprised me by how wild the movie was.

Land of the Lost, bleh didn't want to see it and I'm tired of Will Ferrel's game now.

I just got back from seeing it. It was funnier than I expected. I didn't burst out laughing, but it was funny and enjoyable.

I feel bad for Friel to be associated with the movie.

Yay for UP. A 35% decline is pretty ridiculous (in a good way), isn't it?

Yep. Though the first projections have it at more like a 38% decline, which is still really good (about 45 million off a 68 million opening weekend).

My girlfriend and I contributed tonight. Awesome movie; first 3D movie I've ever seen.

I've never shown interest in Ferrel's stuff for a while now, Land of the Lost looked like his usual fare, and I've seen so many previews at this point I've probably seen half the jokes.

The Hangover I just saw tonight, and it was very good. Better than I expected, actually.

All this means is that the next movie he embarks on will be even more outlandish and over the top than usual. Fuck.

I snuck into this movie after seeing The Hangover last night. The Hangover was AMAZING, seriously don't let the trailers persuade you from not seeing the movie. It is so good, better than any other Phillips movie.

So Land of the Lost. It was VERY weird. I'm not sure who this movie is marketed towards or who would enjoy it. There are many odd sequences that are hard to watch. With that said, Danny McBride is hilarious and makes the movie barely worth a rent. I would avoid in the theater at all costs considering the wealth of other amazing movies. (The Hangover, The Brothers Bloom, Star Trek, Up, Drag Me to Hell, etc.)
