Silent Death

lemme get one or two licks
Hey I need help upgrading the CDR/DVD rom drive on my laptop. The one I have now is a Matshita drive and I want to get one that is a DVD/CD burner. Is there a specific drive I need to purchase or will any manufactures drive work? Thanks for any help.

A lot depends on what model laptop you have. Can it accept 3rd party drives, is the main question.

More info please

I have a GQ RX-7334. Before you laugh I'm not playing Doom 3 on it. It's mostly a business computer, I use to get my email and fax stuff, but lately it has become my primary computer since I don't have a place to put my desktop. I am DLing a lot of stuff due to this and the 30 gig HD is filling up and so I want to back up stuff on DVD so I don’t have to delete it then re DL it next month when I need it. Yeah I could use the cd burner I have not in it, but I want to back it up in on swoop and be done rather than having to keep up with multiple discs.

Okay, I just googled it.

Apparently most of these GQ RX-7334s are sold are Fry's, so I'm assuming that is where you got it? If so, a possibility is to go to Fry's and see if you can purchase a different drive for the notebook.

I lurk on another board (notebookforums.com) and ran a search of the GQ RX-7334, but nothing came up. This basically means it's definitely one of the more obscure laptops :(

Well, all I can say is that purcahsing a third party DVD burner is anywhere from 45-60 dollars, and if you have a spare hard drive lying around, buying an external 3.5 enclosure for the HD and making an external HD would be much more economical and you don't have to deal with buying media for the DVD burner as well.

If you want to try your luck, try posting on notebookforums.com as the people there are extremely knowledgable there and might be able to help you better :)

Good luck

Thanks for the help. I went to Fry's they don't sale laptop drives at all. The guy told me I had to order one through the manufacturer. I actually have a 60 external HD that I'm not using, but I don't want to have to lug around another piece of hardware with me. I have a DVD burner on my desktop, so I already have the media for it, plus I don't expect to run throough a great deal of DVDs backing up stuff.
