Page 13 of the US PSP manual:

LCD screen
Red, blue, or green spots (bright spots) or black spots (dark spots) may appear in certain locations on the LCD screen. The appearance of such spots is a normal occurance associated with LCD screens and is not a sign of malfunction. LCD screens are made using highly precise technology.
However, a very small number of dark pixels or continuously lit pixels exist on each screen. Also, a distorted image may remain on the screen for several seconds after the system has been turned off.

Every LCD product in the world says that. When will people understand that dead pixels are just a natural part of the manufacturing process?

Well, a lot of people aren't questioning the problem itself, or its nature (although some do say that if we demanded better with our wallets, we'd get better) - people have a problem when Sony isn't recognising it as grounds for a replacement when their rival in the market does.

If you demanded more you'd pay more - if thats what you mean by 'your wallet'. The only solution is to throw away faulty panels, and you draw the line at a balance point between reasonable yield and untolerable dead pixels.

Most manufacturers use the same guidelines, so Sony isn't doing anything 'wrong' - but it is annoying. Best practice if its important to you is to buy from someone offering a dead pixel check. I don't have a problem with a $250 item, but for expensive stuff like my TV and projector, I made sure there was either a 'no quibble' returns policy (for my TV) or a dead pixel check (for my projector)
