LEGO Game Boy - Pre-orders Available

$60 for 421 pieces and looks very cool. Much more reasonable than the NES.

You can have an actual GameBoy for that price. Or many of the modern day handheld alternatives that can emulate all retro platforms.

And if you want to have that building experience, there are better options for that too.

Not hating, just saying.

Lego MO for the past 15 years has been DINKs, this is on par with them.

It looks really, really cheap. Why can't this multi-billion dollar toy company still manage to color-match their bricks? I own dozens and dozens of LEGO sets, from the 80s and 90s all the way to today's Bluey sets for my kids. I can tell you the quality of bricks and prints has gone down, while prices, even adjusted for inflation, have gone up.

I don't care how much disposable income someone has, if they decide to buy this, they're a proper fucking muppet. I'd rather throw cash down a drain cover.

Might get it. It is nothing fancy but it is fine for what it is and not much you could do with the Game Boy unlike what they did with the NES. Would be kind of cool to see them go through the Nintendo home consoles with builds like the NES one with evolving television sets to match the times. I don't buy very much LEGO but did get the Super Mario World set during Prime Day and really like it. No stickers for me to poorly align and then be tormented by is always a plus unlike this Game Boy that I know I would be doomed to do that with :messenger_hushed:

Looks good to me. I'll put it on a wishlist for someone in the family to get it for me as a Christmas gift. I'd put it next to my NES Lego set on top of my piano.

The Atari and NES got discounted quite a bit, I'd grab this if I can for $45 or under.

There is quite a bit of license tax on it and I agree the color matching is just bad. The dark grey around the screen is shit. At some point, they changed their color system from buying it ready-to-mold to mixing color themselves. I don't think they have found a way to correct it ever since doing this, different batches simply come out different and it sucks.

This year I've been hauling moshed lego from thrift stores getting over 10x more volume than the same cost at retail, and half the parts are from 90s and better lol. Many of the new parts end up being that one piece in a new set you thought was cool, but didn't want to buy an entire overpriced set for it. The plane nose or the animal or tree or whatever.

I stopped paying attention to all new lego sets coming out and if they turn me into a muppet with this one over my Game Boy fandom, so be it 🤷‍♂️

This is simply not true, and I can prove it with any licensed IP LEGO is producing right now. It doesn't justify the price.

Look up the 'Nintendo Paladone Game Boy Light'. It's a licensed replica of a Game Boy that also functions as a night light. A piece of plastic with actual electronics inside, and you can get it for around 15 bucks. Sure, LEGO uses more plastic, but not 45 dollars more. Their pricing is just out of control. You're paying for LEGO brand, don't be mistaken about it.

You don't prove anything but thanks for the laugh.

I don't understand this trend of offering retro consoles built from LEGO or other bricks. Ffs they're still obtainable, you can have a real (and often working) hardware for a similar price.

You're delusional if you think that doesn't completely debunk your "ohhh but the license tax" argument. But it wouldn't be first time a LEGO fanboy (a fucking toy company) is completely delusional on this forum.

It costs so much not because of the IP license, but because of the LEGO brand tax. Other brick companies offer the same, if not better plastic quality, more prints (or no stickers at all), light kits, and twice the number of pieces for a lower price. But sure, let's pretend it's all because of the IP tax. Clown world.

As far as LEGO sets aimed at adults go, this one is very cool.

You said you had 90's lego sets which are allegedly better? Let's compare price per piece of some LEGO sets.

1995 Royal Knights Castle 6090 712 parts at 94.99 = 13ppp

2005 Medieval Horse Knight Castle, 1371 parts at 129.99 = 9ppp

It appears that the average PPP went down over time but actually the old set was inflated due to having a giant raised baseplate. But even in the 90's, 10 cents per piece was "good", only to be inflated for a "good reason" like that giant baseplate. We didn't have licenses yet. Those licenses became one such "reason".

If you look at non-licensed themes like Creator or City, the PPP ratio is often just as good or better than they hit in the 90s, sometimes a Creator set is priced like a 90s bucket. Game Boy priced at ten cents/piece like a solid 90s set is forty bucks. Even in the 90s, LEGO was more expensive than a two-piece molded night light. By steep license tax I'm referring to the extra twenty bucks. It's steep even by this taxes' standards.

I don't have much room left for my Lego after getting the Titanic, the Venator, and Barad Dur over the last few years, but at least this one is small.

I know LEGO has always been expensive, I'm on record saying this in the LEGO thread on Communities (not that I go there anymore, it's basically a safe space for LEGO fanboys). But it's gotten worse in recent years, and alternative brands are exposing it more and more. So the price, even when adjusted for inflation, slowly keeps going up, while the quality keeps going down. Not exactly the best deal.

I thought everyone even slightly interested in this hobby knew that price per piece is the worst metric you can use. Price per gram would be a much fairer comparison. Older sets used a lot of big pieces, and it was awesome, something that should 100% return for sets aimed at kids. Just look at something like set 5988, The Temple of Anubis. What it achieved with around 700 pieces was incredible. All prints, no stickers. It's magnificent and can be built by kids in a reasonable amount of time to create something majestic. And then rebuilt countless times, which was actually encouraged, they even showed alternative builds on the box.

But anyway, LEGO will continue doing it because people will keep buying it. Customers have voted, and it is what it is. I just want to remind you that the NES Classic Edition launched at $59.99, a fully functioning plastic replica of a console that you could plug into a screen and actually play... Like I said, 🤡🌎.

ot a personal attack on any LEGO fan. I love LEGO (toy, not the brand), and my kids play with it every day. I just think they're greedy cunts, that's all.

It looks like it should be included as part of a larger set.
Kind of want it though It would have to be an impulse buy at Bestbuy along with a washer and Dreyer replacement.

I think it's nice

WAY better presented than the NES. Price is ok. Cool comercial

Maybe I'll get it

Wow someone really hates LEGO. I buy mainly knock-offs so I know how much you save. But going the official lego route you are obviously paying for the license on stuff like Star Wars etc whereas the knock-offs are just ignoring that with their "Star Warriors - Centenary Hawk" crap.
But more importantly you are paying for the design and the instructions. The odd time I have bought an off brand kit that was an original design instead of a rip-off the build has been fucking terrible. Crappy instructions - and terrible ways of assembling things that will have you pulling your hair out.

Yes, look, I hate LEGO so much that I keep my favorite little set from when I was a kid on my desk, original box and all. Not to mention the fact I have a literal LEGO room in my house for my kids.

Nobody here is talking about Chinese knock-off brands. We're talking about legitimate companies with their own designs that offer everything you mentioned, instructions, high-quality plastic on par with or better than LEGO, no stickers, only prints, unique builds, and so on. Companies like Cada or Lumibricks, just to name a few.

LEGO is an awesome toy, but 60 EUR / USD for this Game Boy is a scam. You can buy a functional mini Nintendo console that actually plays games for that price. But hey, I guess I'm in the minority, since multiple people here said they have no issue with the price.

Here's my lovely Scorpion Tracker:

As alluded to in my original post. I do love lego but I've gotten a bit disillusioned with them. The color quality has gone down and the endless IP feel oversaturated, especially the way they use them spreading special elements over 8 expensive sets over 3 waves...and special parts are all I really want at this point so it's too much money. It just all slowly got more meh. I used to check lego leaks, now I saw this on GAF first lol.

I do agree those old large sets were like monolithic workhorses punching way above their weight for the resources given. Back then there weren't as many large sets and it's like they loomed over everything like holy grails in those large boxes with flaps, no matter which one it was lol. I remember drooling over the Temple of Anubis in the store but never got it. I think my personal #1 is 6195 Aquazone base (runner up 6769 fort).

I used to work next to one of the Lego stores. I would go in sometimes and be blown away by how cool the newer sets are, especially in comparison to the ones I had when I was a kid (which were still pretty awesome). But I could never justify actually buying one and bringing it home. Same with this. I understand Lego gears their stuff to adults more these days but I don't see it.

if one day someone asks you "how easy can be to rip off Nintendo/Gamers " you just need to show them this.

I know what you're saying. My daughter wanted the dark blue astronaut, but the pieces are spread across like four different sets. Absolute cunts.

I don't buy Lego sets myself, but I enjoy watching Jang Bricks reviews of different brick built toys and Lego need to seriously step up their game if they want to be relevant in the future. The Chinese equivalents have better colour-matching, use prints a lot more and are cheaper. They, of course, use many of the bricks Lego has designed during the years, but more and more customers will start to take notice what you get for your money.

I got the NES Lego and that set was incredible. I definitely want this.

The NES was interesting but I don't have as much nostalgia. Game Boy, SNES, N64, Gamecube, all yeah. Wii and Wii-U absolutely not. One day we will get a Switch LEGO and I'm all in.

My 5 year daughter loves Bluey and is just now getting into Lego sets. You've now depressed me sir! :messenger_crying:
