Leni Riefenstahl: Nazi or not?

For me, dedicated nazi movie maker from the start of the Hitler government, but, some people say she was a artist only. What you say?

Her works during the period:

1933: Der Sieg des Glaubens ("The Victory of Faith")
1935: Triumph des Willens ("Triumph of the Will")
1935: Tag der Freiheit: Unsere Wehrmacht ("Day of Freedom: Our Armed Forces")
1937: Wilde Wasser ("Wild Water")

Phew. As far as i know it's still not completely clear whether she truly was a nazi or not, people are speculating to this day. However it is clear that she produced movies in the service of propaganda for the nazi regime so there's that. She claimed herself to have had a "friendly professional relationship with hitler and fell for his personality, believing in the good that's in him while realizing his demonic traits way too late due to being blinded"

in my opinion she just went with whatever opinion was popular at the time for the sake of her own success...

She read his book.
She saw the SS killing jews.
She select Roma people heading to death just to film because they had black skin.
She was part of the inner circle.
And she wrote this:

“With indescribable joy, deeply moved and filled with burning gratitude, we share with you, my Führer, your and Germany’s greatest victory, the entry of German troops into Paris. You exceed anything human imagination has the power to conceive, achieving deeds without parallel in the history of mankind.”

I think some people can like her movies, because for instance, I read books about Michael Wittmann, his actions on Caen 1944 and he was a really good tank commander. But he was a nazi until his very end, so it's hard. Also, Kurt Meyer. Really good infantry leader but killed 100 civilians in the Eastern Front.

You can be great at something (in her case film making), and also have been a Nazi. They're not mutually exclusive qualities.

Still I do have to wonder why the OP (recently have garnered thread posting rights) would raise the question here of all places versus a dedicated film forum or some such 🤔
