I'd put this more into synthwave like Perturbator and Dance With The Dead, which I'm totally into, but not quite chiptunes. Think NES soundtracks for Chiptunes.

This is one of the things I love about chiptunes. Some really random ass obscure game can have an amazing soundtrack and you'd never see it coming.

I thought chip tunes is what we call modernized takes like The Messenger or Mutant Mudds, it's a style I find disgusting and inauthentic.
Real old school NES and SNES music are beautiful and should not be mentioned in the same breath as the modern stuff. It sounds awful.

Theres lots of great modern chiptunes, the problem is when there are musicians who didnt live through or experience the music firsthand try and make stuff. I find 90 percent of it isnt actually trying to be emotive..its trying to be tongue in cheek or retro....and yea it comes off sounding really inauthentic. Its like when people try and make games about the 80s or early 90s and its all neon and floating triangles...blends of music that NO ONE in the 80s was listening to together or didnt become mainstream popular until modern times.
That said there is some authentic good stuff out there
