Lets share some NON mainstream music from NON mainstream performers.

Im in a mood to explore music today. And it seems like these songs I discovered today tells me Im in a more mellow mood. I ran across the first one and after dicking around a while I found the others.

Only rules are: dont make it something mainstream, something everyone knows. I want to hear songs maybe normally Id never hear, something different or unique. Like if you have some band no ones heard of but they sound like metallica then dont bother. I want to see what kind of variety we can come up with. And try to only post 1 song per band.

I've heard of every single band or musician in the OP, except not the last one (bleeding blue)

Not as obscure as I thought it was going to be, incidentally all the posts afterwards until this one I have heard zero of those names even. 🤔

Funny, the only one in OP i heard is King Crimson (court of crimson king).

My stuff is kinda mixed. Emo, shoegaze, indie/dream pop, twee.. though mines aren't exactly 'hidden' bands. There are like 46,4,236342,532,45,235,213,562,35, bands in the universe so

I saw these guys open for StereoLab a few months ago. Good band.
Edit: It seems they are picking up. I originally heard of them on Hacker News.

This band opened for Dead Meadow a couple years ago. I never heard of them again, but I dig their albums.

These guys made one of my top 10 albums and then disappeared (okay they release a follow up album, but it wasn't memorable).

This is good prog. At the end of a tough week, I'll blast this stuff with the top down on the car.

Kobong, a experimental/progressive metal band from Poland. Only released two albums during the mid-90's and never saw much success. Often compared to the Swedish behemoths Meshuggah but I think Kobong definitely had their own unique style that I still have yet to hear anywhere else.

Not sure how known or not their are (they do have way less monthly listeners than King Crimson on Spotify though) but I recently came across Haken and I really like some of their stuff

Great post.
Have you heard of Pale Waves? This is the most popular song they did from almost 3 years ago. So yeah I wouldn't consider them 'popular' when you have BTS getting like 2 billion views in a day...
I wouldn't expect a zoomer to understand what 'popular' means.

yes and theyre shit.

the weed is killing your brain cells. so 9 million views for some shitty one hit wonder band means theyre not mainstream because some twink band gets 2 billion views in a day? ok. guess ill post some vanilla ice.

So what you're saying is you think Pale Waves are a popular band?
raw

This isn't the first time I've posted this song and it probably won't be the last because it's amazing.

Virgin Prunes are the flipside of the U2 coin. Band members were all friends but they went their separate ways. U2 did gangbusters and no-one knows Virgin Prunes except for their hardcore loyalist fan base.

If you like nasty Doom metal, please give this your consideration. I can't imagine you being disappointed.

The whole italodisco genre except for Tarzan Boy and Vamos a la Playa. Self Control is debatable, as it was actually famous being sung by Laura Branigan.

Well I hadn't before recently, so they were obscure to me.

I grew up with rock and metal and soul sounds of the 70s. Primarily. Music wasn't something I really explored for the most part I preferred silence if I wasn't playing a game or watching a movie. Music usually was just something I'd have on in the car occasionally since I do my best thinking when I drive, or I am working on something that doesnt require my strict attention.

So this thread is great. I hadn't heard of a lot of stuff in here.

This video has 900k views but everyone I know has never heard of him so I'll assume most of you haven't either. He's absolutely amazing give him a listen.

Bap Kennedy - The Sailor's Revenge

Check out Working Man, The Right Stuff, Celtic Sea. The whole album is great though.

Fuck I just found out he died. Fucking cancer.

Also check out Privateering by Mark Knopfler. I know he's from Dire Straits, but this is one of his solo albums which definitely isn't mainstream. Have a listen to Haul Away and Miss You Blues.

I like Choir Boy and Drab Majesty. Another act in that vein is King Dude, although his music is more guitar focused and less synthesizer (he toured with Drab Majesty). I actually exchanged some messages with him on Facebook. He comes off as pretty cool and down to earth, runs his own T-shirt website as well (separate from band merch).
