Let's talk about redneck music.

With so much shit out there (this applies more to country than bluegrass) these genres don't get discussed too much on NeoGAF. The genres that get dismissed as retarded wife beating ford truck driving banjo shit are actually home to some incredible musicians.

I'd hated country and bluegrass growing up. I had a good reason to hate country since everything that's played on the radio is absolute shit (apart from Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson). Bluegrass I hated because of some irrational dislike of acoustic guitars, banjos, and rednecks in general. I was misguided in my youth and dismissed many things as "lame." It's too bad because I missed out on a lot of great music.

Since becoming an avid acoustic guitar player I've recently within the last year or so taken to listening to some of the better country and bluegrass musicians out there because of the suggestions from other acoustic musicians I've spoken to. It's been a humbling and educational experience. It taught me that I don't know shit and that these rednecks own my face. No matter how good I get at guitar I'll never be as good as Tony Rice.

That's mostly who I want to talk about because he's the guy I've dug into most in the genres. For some reason you don't think of these types of people as virtuosos but that's what they are. Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Norman Blake, Clarance White, and others.

He looks like someone you'd see in that tavern where all the rednecks hang out in South Park and be plays absolutely beautifully. There's an album called Backwaters which is as complex and sophisticated as any other popular album I can think of. It's like the Hot Rats of country music. Jazz country/bluegrass instead of jazz rock.

Yynvie can suck Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins' balls.

i liked the harlem nocturne one (though the drummer was boring as hell) :)

does that make me a redneck

can black people be rednecks

really glad you found a type of music you like but calling it redneck music comes off as derogative and seems like your saying "hey they're not all stupid hicks afterall".

but on topic. i found a lot of my friends who play guitar that are into country really enjoy playing keith urban songs. most are simple but very catchy

Well it's what I used to think. Didn't think I could hook gaf with "lets talk about country/bluegrass." Didn't mean to be insulting.

Love bluegrass music myself, and old-time country and western. Had a great experience this fall at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Fran, Del McCoury band w/ PHJB was by far my favorite act.

That you did! I think of Danny Gatton as the Stevie Ray Vaughn/Jeff Beck of the telecaster/country. Too bad only guitar players seem to have heard of him.

This one youtube comment got it right.

"Every time I think I'm getting good at the guitar I listen to Danny Gatton and realize I'm a piece of shit."

Here's the studio version of Harlem Nocturne. His playing is top notch. I always think the backing bands on these types of albums are meh. Like on Texas Flood. The electric guitar playing is the only part that has any soul. Everything sounds like it was recorded in one take and seems very vanilla. That's why I love these guys live. SRV live >>> SRV studio.

Danny Gatton is good (excellent, even), but if I hear any country drawl in a song, I immediately hate it.

Thanks for the links.

I dig Bobby Dylan and I dig Johnny Cash
And I think Waylon Jennings is a table thumpin' smash
And hearin' Joni Mitchell feels as good as smokin' grass
And if you don't like Hank Williams, honey, you can kiss my ass

'Cause I think what they've done is well worth doin'
And they're doin' it the best way that they can
You're the only one that you are screwin'
When you put down what you don't understand

And if it's a legit accent?

Big Star's Alex Chilton has the drawl but his are among the most beautiful songs evar. Thirteen ftw. Not country tho.

People confuse redneck with white trash. Red neck just means you are hardworking and take joy in the simple things. That and you will do anything, upto and including getting rid of a body for a case of beer.

I am black and some of the best people I know are rednecks of several colors.

I hated country my whole life. growing up in socal it was never popular and always seemed weird. then I went to a country concert and my mind was blown.

largest concentration of beautiful women I'd ever seen! lol. but it took my wife years later to get me into it. I used to listen to hip hop lots then some new wave with some hair bands and today 2011 4 of my radio presets are country.

the genre is great its genuine like no other genre is.

Anyone who thinks country music contains no intellectual value or is all about making conservative political statements just hasn't heard good country. I feel bad putting E.C. anywhere near the word "Redneck" - I personally believe his country projects are more lyrically brilliant than anything written in rock in the past few decades.

Brilliantine glistening
Your soft plaintive whistling
And your wan wandering smile

Died down at The Hippodrome
Now you're walking off to jeers, the lonely sound of jingling spurs, the "toodle-oos" and "Oh, my dears" down at "The Argyle"

Vile vaudevillians applaud sobriety
There's no place for a half-cut cowboy in polite society

The snitch, the snoop, the tattletale
Lead a threadbare up stairs
Adieu, my little ballyhoo
You broke my heart in two
And now I haunt the bars and scent those trite affairs
She went home to gather her comb
And caught him unawares

And there was her man enjoying the lay of the land
He took a walk in the dark with a dish from the stand
Girls and their creations
Tight in the brightest grenadine
But I'd take all that I've seen
For a Slow Drag with Josephine

Josephine, Josephine
But I'd trade all that I've seen for a Slow Drag with Josephine

Gavotte, garrotes, Cotillions and slow Arabesques
Drum-rolls and Farandoles were all made in jest
But when you make that move
I can't resist
When will you declare your armistice?

Josephine, Josephine
But I'd trade all that I've seen for a Slow Drag with Josephine

EDIT: I should mention that this is British country music designed to sound like it was written in America in various periods of time. (most in the 30s-50s.) I like some American stuff too, though!

I realize there's a massive, irrational stigma against country music in the nerd communities - mainly because gamers are, for the most part, liberal, and most country music in America does support conservative messages. So why not listen to some good ol socialist country? I plan to play a bit of national ransom with my band in the music room at PAX. I'll see how that goes.

My memory is shit, but I definately saw Skaggs last year in concert and I think I may have interviewed him, but don't hold me to that. There's was definately a year where I did a photo shoot interview kind of thing with one of the Grammy-winning blue grass bands for my job. Sorry, I don't know much about contemporary top 40 music stars let alone blue grass giants.

We have a big blue grass and BBQ festival where I live every year called Pickin' In the Panhandle if you are interested OP. If you are a fan, it's pretty cool.

I will say, I think "country music" kind of gets lumped into, as OP said, "redneck music". From a dude whose favorite band is like Bad Religion there's a huge difference between the "I'll put a boot in your ass" kind of mainstream country and stuff like blue grass.

I mean, I'm personally not a "fan" per se, but I was personally amazed by the musicianship of a lot of the blue grass players I've seen, even the no name ones.

Plus they are really down to earth, nice people. Like I said, I can't remember if it was Skaggs or not, but it was a really a big-deal blue grass band that I personally interviewed and they were awesome.

The worst experience I ever had was some No. 3 placing American Idol reject that played our bumfuck county fair and I had to go through a team of like eight security guards just to get a 30 second sound bite while they scolded me for not contacting their publicist.

Ctrl+F "Lyn"

I am disappoint.

Although to be fair it's only debatably "redneck" as the OP considers it: Lynyrd Skynyrd

Free Bird
Sweet Home Alabama
etc.

Interesting stuff here, thanks.
Has country music stopped being the most sold genre in the States?
I remember always hearing that but being skeptical.

LOL. That's so awful. Seriously, though, it's kind of hard living in rural America because this is what people think of you. Yes, we have tractors. Yes, we have cows. But that video is kind of the complete oppposite of what OP posted. Look at them links!

That link you posted is like a stereotype. It's like posting a link to Soulja Boy in a "Lets talk about rap" thread or a link to Linkin Park in a "lets talk about rock" thread.

I'm going to fucking blow your mind. I live in West Virginia. I'm a liberal. I'm an atheist. I think gay marriage is cool and the repeal of don't ask don't tell is probably the best legacy of the Obama administration. I even have a full set of teeth. I don't even like blue grass so much, but they are damn good muscicians if you'd ever give them a chance.

Country guitarists are some of the most amazing players. Clapton once said that every kid behind the counter at a Nashville McDonald's was a better guitar player than he. And I love that "country" sound of a Fender Telecaster. I'm not a huge fan of modern country, but I love bluegrass of any era.

I thought the OP was was refering to something more along the lines of The Revolting Cocks song, Beers Steers and Queers. great music just the lyrics are a bit whack

Woah, I've known Bob for years. He went on the Jerry Springer show back in like 1997. Him and a few of his friends made up some bullshit story about him having sex with his sister and it made it on the show. It was hilarious!

I should ask him about this, I'll see him at least once or twice next year.

This probably doesn't help my case, since there's clearly a dude in a sleeveless flannel playing what looks to be a tree stump that looks like it has strings attached to it. But when I hear the words country or blue grass this is what I think. That and the video is night vision quality. For reference, these guys are from what we would consider the part of town where people only drink wine and eat cheese. (shit that's probably going to look where I live look really, really bad)

Again this is from someone whose favorite band is Bad Religion and who hates "country" music, but could probbaly rock out to these guys. Bare with me if the link doesn't work at first.

There I fixed it. It's like CGGB bluegrass.

I assumed this was going to be a Kid Rock thread.

What's that song, Blue Jeans or something? It's the first (and pretty much only) country song I like, yet I can't remember the name of it. I think i's by a dude named Jake. lol.

From my experience living in southern Indiana, most rednecks now listen to shitty rock music like Creed and Nickelback, not bluegrass or country.
