Level 5 is what Square used to be.

I'm confused. Just making the engine lets them be eligible for credit as a developer? (I'm talking about Level 5 and DQVIII)

Yeah, it's like people are assuming good graphics = good games. DQVIII really isn't L5's game so all you have is DC1 (weak), DC2 (great), and now Rogue Galaxy which may have great graphics with zero load times, but it's a few steps back from DC2 and not even in the same league IMO.

They need to make more than 1 great game before I start giving them credit besides being good programmers.

All it takes is like, 2 good RPGs and a development house has officially elevated themselves to Squaresoft's previous heights?

We agree about RPGs most time Beb.. but RG is a really good RPG. With a nice looking story and battle system. Also with much more focus than DC2 (which I liked very much btw) I am waiting to play the English version because I don't want to take 2 hours to move ahead 45 mins in the game.. but from what I have played I would say you are dead wrong about RG

You gotta remember, you probably prioritize different things in an RPG than Bebpo does =p.

Not sure how much you've played, but to me RG is a game that seems "wow, nice" at the start and then the more you play the more dull it gets and you realise it's more of a tech showpiece than a game with a soul IMO.

Dark Chronicle/Dark Cloud 2 had a lot of charm to it. From the title cinema with the theme song playing, to the likeable main character, to the charming locales and the neat photograph/invention system. Then you had the really enjoyable sim-city like town building which was the most interesting part of the game IMO. RG is just too standard, too plain, with nothing to really distinguish itself from every other action-rpg out there besides "look no loading", which is a great accomplishment, but it's not really what makes a game good.

To me RG is like .Hack except a billion times better than .Hack in graphics, loading, dungeons, and just general execution on the programming side. Yet it's nowhere near as interesting of a story, and has only 1/1 billionth of the creativity that .Hack had.

I loved DC2... but DC1 was much more of a tech display.. of course I just played for an hour and wacthed my friend play his version which he was about 12 hours in.. looked good then, and he said he is loving every second of it.. of taste vary. Just have to agree to disagree on this rare game.. not often that we do! :D

The town-building part was what I loved so much about Dark Cloud 2... the game really felt like a spiritual successor to Quintet's classic SNES games like SoulBlazer or Actraiser. Also the weapon levelling up system was quite addictive... Spheda rocked and the whole taking pictures was a good idea although I didn't really put much use to it. My only problem with that game (aside from the lame story) was that the dungeons just dragged on and on and weren't really interesting.

I expect even more good things out of Level 5 in the future.
