LG's Sliding Phone Video

This is just a concept for other manufacturers who buy their screens right? Or are they coming back to the mobile market?

If foldable/sliding screens and other such gimmicky stuff could hold up over time and not compromise the screen with a crease, then cool. It’s not some killer feature I care about personally but I guess there’s someone out there who wants it

The concept is cool, I could see myself getting a phone like this in the future if they ever stop being stupidly expensive.

Though from my understanding these foldable screens are very prone to scratches, so I don't know how good it will work in the long run having at least part of the screen exposed at all times.

One of the coolest phones I've seen. I bet it's not too durable though, the motors and gears I could see getting gunked up with the phone going in and out of pockets and the rolled up screen obviously can't have a screen protector on it.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
I don't understand what he's saying, but this pudgy Korean man is delightfully charming.

But I don't need a phone that does this. I was hoping it had a keyboard.

Samsung is the only company making foldables that still have a crease. They've been beat by all the Chinese oem's. Luckily for them those foldables aren't available in the states.

I've had a Fold (first gen) since launch.

Sure, the inside display is a bit scratched up now, but it's still perfectly usable. The only real issue is the battery, but that's a problem with almost every modern smartphone (oh, how I miss an easily replaceable battery).

1. Those Chinese foldables still have a crease.
2. It remains to be seen if their folding mechanism is as durable.
3. They fold flat, which if there is something on the display, will press it into the soft inner display.
4. Buying one is supporting the PRC and CCP even more. Fuck that shit.

I have a Fold 4, and I love seeing where this tech is going. It's amazing! I do not feel like it's ready for the mainstream because of the issues with dust, and this LG phone has a lot of surface area that slides back into the phone. I have to imagine it would accumulate a lot of dirt quickly.

You've used the new Vivo and OPPO foldables? They have no crease even huawei's foldable has less of a crease than Samsung's. Still leagues better than samsung's. There is no ethical consumption.

https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/01/20/oppo-find-n-shows-no-crease-even-after-100000-folds/ OPPO has no crease and vivo and huawei's are only noticeable if you set out to look for it. The point is that these foldables are leagues better than Samsung's

Bruh. It has a crease. A less noticeable one, but it has one.

That article you linked also says, "Even the Motorola Razr 5G has a similar implementation, however, it happens to develop creases after prolonged usage." which is just wrong.

It too has a crease from the get-go, which also gets more noticeable over time (as all current foldables do).

Oh, and Samsung makes the display for the Oppo. They haven't used the same hinge design, as they don't want the screen to touch itself, not due to being behind. They may also not have wanted to deal with a moving display as the Oppo and Motorolas use.

So next time, actually check before you go off on one.

Samsung is absolutely being lazy and behind. They're on their 4th foldable and have the worst crease, the thickest foldable and a horrible aspect ratio on the outer screen. No need to improve your product when you have no competition in the west.

Oh, just ignore where I proved you wrong why don't you.

Tams Tams I actually think the Surface Duo was the better idea, because instead of having a crease it had really thin bezels around the hinge instead of a foldable screen.

I can also see why it would annoy people though, the same way a Nintendo DS did.

I seen this concept about a year or two ago. It was the first time I felt an extendable screen didn't look so fragile and gimmicky. I hope it becomes mainstream, but then Apple will take 5 years to adopt it under a different "brave" vision with a silly name, but perhaps all the kinks will be rolled out by then 🥁.

I'd prefer that small bezel than the screen itself getting a fold crease, easy choice.

Whether it's for better or for worse, I think Apple's choice to wait until refinement is safer. It's held them back with things like the notch when hole punch cameras seem to be commonplace with kinks worked out, but it helps avoid things like creased screens because the technology is immature. Didn't stop them making a phone that loses signal when you hold it, though.

Apple want you to be an early adopter, but they don't want to be early adopters themselves.

Didn't understand a single non English word he said, but man his hand were mesmerizing to watch. Like ASMR for my eyes. :lollipop_smiling_face_eyes:

Cool tech, but I would never use it.

It's all subjective, but for me the Duo is a) too wide and b) the bezel is annoying.

I use my Fold fullscreen sometimes and would not want a black bar down the middle. And I like that it still fits into all my pockets.

My suspicion is few in this thread have actually used a foldable. I've used my Fold every day since I got it almost three years ago.

I think American/Euro folks really don't get how much more advanced mobile phones are in China. The cost to performance ratio is one great but it's the choice and innovation I love. Oppo's foldables are so good. I use a high sense e-ink phone that I have never seen outside of china. The only negative is flashing google services/ international ROM on China market models.

Agreed, everyone at work was really impressed with my Xiaomi 11s ultra, especially its picture quality and the small screen on the back for selfies/notifications.
