Liam Gallagher sings Don't Look Back In Anger for first time in honour of UK victims

Ex-Oasis frontman sang the Britpop classic for the first time during his Saturday solo set
The ex-Oasis frontman closed his solo set at Glasto on Saturday afternoon (June 24) with an emotional a cappella version of ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, which he dedicated to the victims of both the Manchester and London terror attacks and the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

“I want to dedicate this next song to all the people who were killed in the Manchester attacks and in London and in the Grenfell Fire, so if you know the words join in,” he told the crowd before his rare rendition of the song.

After performing the Oasis hit, which was sung by brother Noel Gallagher on record and at the band’s gigs, for the first time, Liam told BBC’s Jo Whiley: “I’ve never done that before. That’s kind of like [everyone’s] song for the moment because of all the shit that’s going down in the world so I thought, ‘If our kid’s [Noel] not going to do it for them then I’ll do it for them.’ And I thought I did alright actually.”

It's almost like looking into an alternative reality where Liam chose Don't Look Back In Anger over Wonderwall.

Nah, on par I'd say.

Liam's voice seems to be getting better. He sounded like garbage a few years back.

Oasis >>>> Blur in the early to late 90's. Thereafter, all Blur. Three of Oasis' first five albums are classics.

Too bad the Gallagher brothers are no closer to reconciling. I would be interested in seeing if they could adapt in today's musical climate.

Their Christmases must be fun.

Nice gesture.

By all accounts they are not that kind of family, the kind who has a big get together at occasions. The only documented meetings they've had since the Oasis split in 2009 is a couple of coming together's at Man City games and one at George Michael's house, bizarrely.

not sure what they'd have to adapt when there's still a massive market for nostalgia acts like them.

obv if they did a new album they wouldn't coin in from that as much in part due to the change in the way people consume music but they would still sell out huge shows.

And throwing in some shade at Noel at the same time. Classy.

Fun fact about Noel

However, speaking on Radio X this evening (June 6), host Gordon Smart revealed how Noel “secretly” donated his royalties from the song to the cause.

“I’ve seen some unpleasant headlines about Noel and why he never played the gig in Manchester at the weekend,” Smart said. “It’s only right to point out, and I don’t think this is public knowledge because I’m sure he would never mentioned it, but I found out today that as soon as ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ started to appear spontaneously at the vigils, he made sure all the royalties went to the families. That was before any gig was mentioned.”

He added: “It seems wrong to me that Noel’s getting a hard time for a reunion he was never part of. It’s a shame any attention at all has been taken away from a really special occasion at Old Trafford. But there you go, true fact. He gave his blessing for the songs without any drama at all.”

And he was never asked to be part of the concert that Liam put him on blast for not being part of

Yeah - not good. This is legit one of my favorite songs ever - but after seeing the Manchester concert version and this, I'm pretty sure it might be one of those songs that only Noel Gallagher should sing.

I hate it when singers stop at the chorus and ask the audience to sing it for them. The chorus is the most memorable part of the song.

Just one guitar to accompany him would've been nice.

I'd see them if they reunited for a nostalgia tour but other than that, Oasis kinda belongs in the 90s. At the time, though, I absolutely loved them, especially those first two records. Several of the band members have said they should've broke up after those (after the Knebworth '96 gig) and I agree. They would've gone out as stone cold heroes.

For those who would deny Oasis, it's pretty hard to argue with that set.

I think the people saying that this is shit are missing the point. He didn't do it to actually cover the song, he did it as a tribute to bring the crowd together. It was more about showing support and solidarity than performing the song. I highly doubt he'll ever perform it again.

He did it cause he can't hit high notes to save his life.
No, he did it because that's the tradition. Watch any performance of this song post-2000, Noel always does this too.

But Noel does sing the second and third/fourth chorus's post 2000 most of the time, or sometimes just the third/fourth. Liam didn't have the third/fourth chorus since he did it acapella, but would've been interesting to hear it. His voice has been very good.

Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to hear him sing the whole thing, just explaining why he didn't sing it all. I feel like this is a dream come true for a lot of Oasis fans including myself, I was totally shocked when I saw this during the live stream!

He's a fat cretin, making a terrorist outrage all about him and his feud with his infinitely more talented brother that he should be eternally grateful to.

Feels a little strange hearing the notes get cut short. Not easy to sing a song like this which is usually so full without any backing music though so kudos to him for doing something a little unique. I'll always be Team Noel, but I'm glad Liam is doing well as of late.

I'm pretty sure it's a part of their DNA, they cannot stop themselves.

Pretty much.

Noel is right though.
EDIT: anyone been listening to his new stuff? I liked wall of glass. going to check the new one on the way home in the car. cautiously optimistic.
