Light Saber Duel Leaves Two in Critical Condition

Two Star Wars fans are in a critical condition in hospital after apparently trying to make lightsabers by filling fluorescent light tubes with petrol.

A man, aged 20, and a girl of 17 are believed to have been filming a mock duel when they poured fuel into two glass tubes and lit it.

The pair were rushed to hospital after one of the devices exploded in woodland at Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

A videotape was found nearby by police called to the scene on Sunday.

A police spokeswoman said the pair were taken to West Herts Hospital before being transferred to the specialist burns unit at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, in Essex.

They are both said to be in a critical condition.

She said the 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man from Hemel Hempstead suffered serious injuries.

She added: "At this stage we are unable to confirm the exact circumstances, but glass tubes and traces of accelerant (flammable substance) were found at the scene."

i'm inclined to agree. Hell, real nerds would've used plastic lightsabers and made the sounds themselves if they had to. They would've also known that they're lightsabers and not flamesabers.

These people were from Britain...I feel dirty now. I apologise on behalf of the stupidity of these idiots. Having a lightsabre fight? Right, who hasn't done this?! But petrol? ffs surely nobody is really that dumb?

They were going to light them on fire to make them glow internally. I'm guessing that unfortunately upon ignition the gas expanded too fast and too forcefully for the fragile florescent tubes to handle, and that's all she wrote.

What's morbidly funny is that it would've been cheaper to buy a pair of quality plastic lightsabers + video camera and editing equipment than to treat their wounds. Damn.

The stupidity is just ... wow ...


Futzing around, using some gas with a fluorescent tube isn't even all that big of a deal - if you only use a little.

But this sounds like they actually filled the damn things up!!! Wouldn't one be a little concerned once one realizd they just poured a gallon or so of gas into a confined container?
