Lights out in Europe?

For the love of god let it be aliens

Please

EMP bomb.

Everything works fine in Poland.

Had no idea they had electricity in Spain.

Google street view from Spain:

Whole countries out of electricity is not "just". That's some major fuck up.

Spain has few nuclear power plants.

No power here in Portugal.

I'm guessing cell phone towers have a backup seeing as my mobile Internet is working?

Same here I am in Barcelona. For what's it worth, Spanish electric network operator said it's beginning to recover at the north and the south and is attempting to progressive reenergize the network.

My money is on a foreign power testing the waters in what they can hack and shut off in the west.

You could be right. It must be a covert sabotage action by Russia's FSB of the Spain and Portugal's combined power grid. The combined population of Spain and Portugal is a mere 58 million people so hardly anyone will notice the disruption, the whole thing can be kept out of the news and it will serve as the perfect preparation for a future attack on the Baltics (population 6 million with close to non existent army).

This makes so much sense that I'll disregard any news about more logical explanations.

Truth is finding the root cause of the blackout will take awhile. Right now unless someone called the eu and said hi it's me no one knows anything.

People who think like this must be absolutely exhausted all day

Imagine living in constant fear that every power outage, every glitch, every little inconvenience is the result of some foreign power "testing the waters" lmfao

Not everything is some shadowy 4D chess move

Combined armies of Baltic states are ~50 000 and they are investing heavily into them. Land mines are returning to Europe as well. I would say, don't underestimate them. Especially after how soviet union was completely fucked buy much smaller Finland forces in WW2.

Seems like they are trying to make a Black Start in Spain right now.
The last days, renewables have been on a new peak. Now its too sunny and windy at the same time, so the electricity is blocking itself.
Happens when you invest only in solar and windcraft but use lines from the 1920s.

Entire first world countries can lose power in peace time…?
Yes. It is the drawback of centralized grids. It does put in perspective that you can shutdown the whole grid, infrastructure etc. across multiple european countries at once. Can be used in wars - shutdown grid and no trains are running, decimating logistics. Plus airports.

Electricity blocking itself is a thing?

All good in Greece, browsing gaf from work...

I cannot recall hearing ever about a country wide black out.... Has this happened anywhere before?

I was just telling a colleague to stock up 6 months in food in case of an electricity infrastructure hack. What a coincidence if that's really the cause.

Electricity blocking itself is a thing?
oh boy, where do I start ;)
Short version: Yes, yes it is! A lot!

Example: When the sun shines in Bavaria, Germany, they have to shut down some solar panel plants because of over-production.
Imagine a river that suddenly gets way too much water and starts to roll towards a dam. Damn, you think and shut down what you can.

10 GW loss of demand .. damn, that´s quite huge.

The power grid must keep generation and consumption balanced all the time. A "10 GW loss of demand" means that 10 gigawatts of electricity usage suddenly disappeared, likely because of a blackout or emergency shutdowns. This sudden drop causes the grid frequency to rise sharply, which can damage equipment and destabilize the network. Between Spain and France, such a large event suggests major grid problems, possibly involving automatic protections or a partial system collapse.
