Just saw it and while it wasn’t the best Pixar film it did have fabulous sci fi animation kind of like Solo a Star Wars story not bad but probably didn’t need to be told yet not as outright unnecessary a cash grab as the still enjoyable Toy Story 4.

What I don’t get is the weird conservative dog piling backlash this got for clicks and ad revenue generating outrage.

Really? Was anyone actually offended by like a total of 30 seconds worth of a montage of a happy lesbian couple with their kid and grandkid growing up? Oh the horror! I witnessed a kiss on the cheek from two ladies despite seeing a helluva lot more than that on pornhub.

It probably flopped due to Disney+ training people to expect “free” Pixar films instead of theaters being the only option IMHO not some vindication that Disney has gone off the woke cliff and are getting punished for it.

It's not woke at all, I agree. It was enjoyable but middle tier for Pixar. Still, even middle tier is still better than the vast majority of animation efforts from the rest of the industry. The new Minions film for example is god damn awful compared to this.

It wasn't "woke" at all. I went in expecting the worse based on the outrage from the "everything is now woke" crowd and enjoyed it. I even missed the kiss everyone was losing their shit over. Either that or Disney cut it from the streaming edition.

Personally, I think I liked it better than Tory Story 3 and for sure 4. Also, them not using the Toy Story name and Tim Allan was probably for the best though they lost ton of ticket sales. It's really different from the Toy Story movies as it is sort of dark? And I'm not sure kids, or a lot of adults that watched Toy Story as kids can an appreciate Lightyear for what it is, which is not, "hey, lets have an adventure getting home". This is more, "hey, everyone is dead or dying around me as I try to find a way to get home".

I'm pretty sure that everything that isn't explicitly anti-woke is woke to those nuts. We're at the point where I see people complaining about it about 10x more than I actually see that stuff.

It starts with the typical interracial asian and african american lesbian couple having a kid which is typical stuff for these studios. We know why its there.

But I liked the movie. CGI was top notch and few of the scenes did make me go wow. It also has a really well done atmos track. Biggest annoyance is Waitikis idiot charecter. Hes really one dimensional. Definetly worth a watch.

The real problem was disrespecting Tim Allen IMO.

It was a bad movie, but the first third talks about companion and her wife several times. I don't know if that is woke.....but it certainly seemed forced.

I think the next Disney animated movie has more inclusivity or "wokness" so...let see how it performs at the box office.

I read the many, many complaints about the kiss to try to influence this film.

The answers are in your assessment. The kiss in film was simply an example of culture in the West which finds safe expression in the West. It's not new to the West. It's part of the West. These are representative of families like this that have found moments of peace, love, and happiness in the socially developed safety of the West.

The conservatives are the cancel culture warriors. They're against anything that limits their control over sexual lives. They don't want it to be seen as an expression of life the West, because they don't want it in the West. They want to impose their primitive old aeon order on the expression of human life as it has been done for millenia. That's the larp they know. They're attacking Western culture, possibly influenced by less developed parts of the world where the kiss is being removed for them.

Yeah, most didn’t make a fuss about it, but the few that did were pretty obnoxious. The film was rated “Parental Guidance Suggested”. So if a parent is that over protective of their kid, well then do some research next time on a film’s contents before seeing it. I don’t see people demanding Studio Laika to apologize for Coraline, a PG film yet contains imagery more frightening than most PG-13 “horror” films.

However it also felt kinda souless and joyless for a movie that's ostensibly for kids. I enjoyed it but most likely will never watch it watch it again, a sentiment I have with most modern Pixar movies these days.

I don't think it was woke in the slightest. I liked that Alisha supported Buzz for her entire life, and how their friendship was portrayed.

A truly stereotypical “woke” film would have had future Buzz/Zurg be homophobic and be messing with the timeline from that angle. But in the film, he’s just trying to, from his perspective, help her become a Space Ranger again, and he never comes off as he has any actual issue with her relationship. So they avoided the whole “older straight white man is discriminatory” cliche.

For me, it was the blatant cash grab that turned me off, I didn't even know there was a lesbian couple in it till after it was released. I try not to reward studios for trying to squeeze every penny possible out of their franchises.

I wholeheartedly agree. it probably helped that the trailers didn't look great and the word of mouth was that it was a bad movie so I ad really low expectations, but as someone who grew up with toy story I genuinely enjoyed it.

Reminds me of a school friend I had growing up whose parents were either Jehova’s witnesses or evangelicals: one sleepover at my house watching Back to the Future and he was never allowed to visit us again. Some People are too damn sensitive with shielding their kids ( I say this as a parent) and it either backfires and they become dope smoking hippies like that kid despite shielding at Christian camps or they become even worse social conservative nuts.

I haven't seen it but people here I feel are reaching if they suspect its woke just because it has a lesbian kiss.
