Lindsay Lohan goes to jail...for 84 minutes ;(

LOS ANGELES -- Lindsay Lohan was a jailbird for just 84 minutes Thursday, becoming the latest celebrity to serve less than a day for a drunken driving offense.
Lohan, 21, turned herself in to the Los Angeles County women's detention center in Lynwood at 10:30 a.m. She was searched, fingerprinted and placed in a holding cell in the inmate reception area but got to keep her street clothes, sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

"She was cooperative," he said.

Lohan was released at 11:54 a.m. Her original daylong sentence was reduced because she met criteria that took into account overcrowding at the lockup and the fact that her crime was nonviolent, Whitmore said.

Did the celebrity receive special treatment?

"Absolutely not. This is what we do for most everybody in this position," Whitmore said. In fact, 30 to 50 women are granted early releases from the facility every day, he added.

An e-mailed message seeking comment from Lohan's publicist was not immediately returned.

In May, the star of "Mean Girls" and "Freaky Friday" was arrested after crashing her Mercedes-Benz into a tree in Beverly Hills. She was arrested again in July after the mother of Lohan's former personal assistant called 911 to report that her car was being chased by an SUV. The chase ended in Santa Monica, where police arrested Lohan for being behind the wheel. In both cases, Lohan was found in possession of small amounts of cocaine.

In August, she reached a plea deal on misdemeanor drunken driving and cocaine charges stemming from the arrests. The judge sentenced her to four days in jail -- the mandatory minimum for a second drunken-driving offense -- but gave her credit for 24 hours already served. She elected to complete 10 days of community service instead of 48 hours behind bars.

The total deal called for her to enter treatment, spend a day in jail and perform community service.

"It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs," Lohan said in a statement released by her publicist in August.

Lohan had until Jan. 18 to serve the jail time.

She spent two minutes longer in lockup than Nicole Richie did in August for a similar offense.

Richie was arrested Dec. 11, 2006, after witnesses reported seeing her black Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle headed the wrong way on a freeway in Burbank. She pleaded guilty in July to a misdemeanor DUI charge in a deal with prosecutors that helped her avoid a potential year in jail because it was a second driving-under-the-influence conviction. She served 82 minutes in custody, during which she was booked but never actually placed in a cell.

Richie's co-star on TV's "The Simple Life," Paris Hilton, served 23 days at the same jail this year after she was found guilty of driving on a suspended license while on probation for an alcohol-related reckless-driving case.

I read the first few words of the thread title and thought this was an old thread that was bumped. :lol

It's a fucking shame drunk driving is treated as such a petty offense unless someone dies.

If she's the one dying and the other victim is a tree, I wouldn't complain too much. But yeah, it's pretty disgusting. The problem is the # of offenders. If we locked up every person who drove drunk and made them serve multi-year sentences, our already to-capacity cells would be pouring with more inmates.

Clearly the solution is to change the way for testing someone's B/A level. Instead of a breathalyzer, all suspects need to be rushed to specially selected driving obstacle courses. If they pass, let them go. If they slam into a tree, let them die.

When Lohan loses, everyone wins. Today, everyone loses :(

This might not make me very popular on GAF, but is drunk driving any different than driving while on prescription drugs? While texting and driving? The answer is no. I don't condone or approve of drunk driving AT ALL, but it seems to have received a much larger negative reaction than other types of distractions while driving.

Stoners and pot heads who are a threat to no one get jailed, while violent drunks that are a danger to others go free. Wheres the justice in that?

If you're driving while high enough on prescription drugs that it alters your ability to operate a vehicle significantly and noticably, then it SHOULD fall under "driving under the influence."

And frankly, somebody who is texting while driving is flat out asking to die. Pick one or the other. Doing both at once should qualify as a suicide attempt.

Locking people up isn't the solution. If people want to put lives in danger like this, suspend their licenses. Basic three strike system: first offense gets you a hefty fine. Second offense gets your license revoked for 3 months plus a fine. Third offense...I haven't figured it out yet

It involves a bottle of vodka and shock therapy.

:lol

That ain't going to work. Suspending a license doesn't do shit. The ONLY way suspending a license would ever work is if we required ID before getting gas.

I like my death by drunkeness better. Or, more realistically, first strike they get a suspended license. Second strike they lose their car.

But, doing that would force many who are already impoverished to become unemployed. Thus making them drink more, steal more, etc. etc.

If locking them up doesn't work and taking their toys away won't either, what's the only other solution? Counseling only works for people who voluntarily engage in it and community service or public embarrassment is only temporary and doesn't take the keys out of their hands.

Let's just send them all to Montana.

What about talking on a cell phone? Mythbusters found it is worse than being legally intoxicated.

PhoenixDark said:
Same here. Mythbusters is not a great source for anything in a serious discussion

I've driven drunk...a few times in my days. I talk on my cellphone probably 74% of the time I drive.

Sometimes being on the phone actually makes me more alert, since I'm not sitting there bored on my way to work.

Being drunk on the other hand...man...that's some scary ass shit. I feel like a complete asshole for ever doing that, and I'll never do it again.

It is for people that don't have big time lawyers and celebrity. Hell, we have had some celebs with multiple hit and run offenses that don't get shit.

It's not the actual conversation, it's the dialing and driving with one hand. That's why we have hands free talking and dialing phones.

That's just retarded.

What's the difference between cell phone and passenger..... I barely listen to people when I talk to them on the phone anyways. It's normally just a bunch of uh huhs.

At least the passenger can say "WATCH OUT!"

I can still dial and drive. Just dial when there's not as much traffic around. Usually, anyone I'm calling is on my speed dial.

I refuse to text message unless I'm at a light or in a jam though.

I'm pretty sure this isn't true.
There's a reason one is being outlawed and the other isn't. The conversation is still a distraction, but doesn't hinder as much as the other two.

Thats a really crappy mugshot. I have seen better recent pics of her. Bad shot I guess... I love her other mugshot, she seemed so lost.

"Certainly not! We always let people off the hook for drunk driving. We would never let someone serve their sentence, EVER. This is NORMAL."

Oh, okay. That's comforting.

Some people aren't aware that certain medications are so powerful.

Texting and driving should be illegal. Talking on your cellphone and driving should be illegal. Doing your God damned makeup and driving should be illegal. Our country is full of awful fucking drivers who wouldn't be nearly as awful is they spent more time driving and less time dicking around with other shit.

I take this shit extra personally because of the fact that I ride a motorcycle; I get at least one dickless wonder per trip that isn't paying attention and either cuts across into my lane (Without being bothered to use the blinker or check their mirrors) or one who takes my right-of-way at an intersection.

Our entire traffic system needs to be reformed to place more emphasis on good driving and less emphasis on the speed at which you're driving. I never felt like my life was threatened on the autobahn, despite going 100+ routinely.
