Linux distro recommendations?

Due to the fact that I'm no longer playing a PC game regularly, I've decided to use linux more, and since I haven't used linux in about near a year, I'm going to upgrade and I'm wondering if I should try a new distro.

I've been a devout SuSE fan for a few years now, but I'm willing to try something new for shits and giggles.

If you want to try something new for shits and giggles, and aren't scared of the command line and config files, Gentoo is the way to go. You'll learn more about Linux just by installing it, and once it's up and running smoothly it's possibly the best distro I've used. Not for the weak, though.

:/ I'm slightly weak, I can work my way around a shell, but I dunno if I'm like a command line warrior. I'll try Fedora and I'll look into gentoo. Thanks guys.

Nor for the smart. Installing Gentoo makes me sick.

Try Ubuntu, it's close to the ultimate linux. Closer than any other, at least.

I'm a noob (but not quite!) when it comes to Linux, and I find that Ubuntu is a good way to start. Don't know if I'd go with it if I wasn't a relative noob though.

Or you know, for people that are sick of waiting on the Debian team to release sarge.

Actually, I still use Debian because of apt-get. I run sarge too (with a woody base I guess), so it's not like I'm ever short for new programs. Maybe I'll have to wait a week or two, but I don't see that as a big deal. I've considered switching to (K)Ubuntu or Gentoo in the past, but didn't really feel like going through the trouble of switching. What I have now works well, so *shrug*.

I'd also like to use this rare opportunity to express my feelings on how utterly stupid the name Mandriva sounds.

You can get apt-get on other distributions. My work computer (Fedora 3) has it, and I've had it on Slackware installs too.

I recommend Slackware, Ubuntu or SuSE.

Depends on skill level with Linux

Noob: Fedora core or Mandriva (now conntectiva and Mandrake)

Medium: SuSe

Skillz: Gentoo or Debian

Hm, didn't know they had it in Fedora, but I knew it was in other dists. I just don't really feel like changing, especially considering that everything works so nicely right now, heh.
