Linux is the future of gaming if Microsoft do not do something

I think I'll start with a 4TB SATA SSD like a BX500 or something and start farting around off that with Bazzite. I really really want to ditch windows. I really only need Steam, Brave Browser and that's about it.

I'm talking about the ads on the right side

In search settings.

Then I will deactivate those features again. It's much better than my games not working, working with broken features or needing significant more tinkering to work.
You're blowing the issues on the Linux side way put of proportion.

Some games running at 150 vs 170 on one or the other is a non issue, my TV only does 120.

I get respect and control over my stuff.

Anyway, things are moving in the right direction, you can hop in whenever you feel ready.

Fuck it. I just went full Bazzite on my main rig. I booted up the live, had no issues, installed as dual boot. Was playing games within 15 minutes on my 4080S. Converting all my drives to EXT4 right now.

Oh shit, I can't play F1 25 and BF6 that I just bought. I can keep the dual boot and do that, or I can just make a VM and passthrough some gfx and ta-da.

People are weird about thier computers. There's really nothing much that would really hold you back except personal preference. Ya it's different to get around but you can still find your way. I'm what would be considered a hardcore PC user and my main rig is a glorified Internet Kiosk that plays games. What am I really doing that requires Windows??

Oh and my DNS requests at home have gone down 50% in the last 3 days I've done this, I wonder why?

Number 1 fix when you find a game that doesn't work; In steam, go to properties, compatibility, and try a few different proton versions. Don't be afraid to be going back to kind of older ones. I try proton experimental first, if that wasn't the default, and then roll it back skipping 1-2 versions at a time. ymmv but this is the fix 90% of the time for a game that doesn't launch for me.

I am talking about my experiences with several distros, currently Fedora, Nobara and SteamOS.

Ironic you mention "control over my stuff" while we don't even have a decent Nvidia and AMD control panel like on Windows.
I am curious, which games are you referring to?

Do you play anti-cheat games? I have yet to have a major issue playing games in Linux.
Like Wuthering Waves still not playing cutscenes that are videos, I only get sound and a black screen. Or gazilions of non Steam games that need "Lutris" and luck with a wine or proton version that works without issues like missing geometry/textures/effects like my Lego Batman.

O c'mon gazillions of games. I can't believe there wouold be that much difference in our setups - unless that's the difference between amd and nvidia. That would be pretty bad. If not that, then steam deck would not fly.

When proton came out, I would check protondb before buying games. After a while where it improved, I would just buy the games, test them to make sure they start, and refund if they didn't. Now, I just assume the game will work. Don't check anything, don't test anything. Proton is that reliable.

Wuthering Waves is free and Lego Batman EPIC gave me. :pie_thinking:

nvidia is still rather mid in linux. Its better performance wise but I find that it has other stability issues.

There were rumors that nvidia was making a dedicated gaming laptop with an ARM CPU, but couldn't get the performance.

If nvidia wanted to make a powerplay, they could make their own Linux OS. If that happened, people would listen.

Unfortunately, they only care about AI right now....

I ran a 3080 in Linux for over a year alongside a separate Windows install. Didn't notice that much of a difference in performance 🤷‍♂️

It's currently running Bazzite on my girlfriend's PC and she never mentions problems.

Once they get the DX12 to Vulkan conversion issues fixed then I might make Bazzite my gaming desktop on my 4090.

Hopefully that isn't too fasr off. There is reason to be optimistic.

I just caught up on that a bit. Nvidia says they identified the problem and are working on it, so it's just a matter of time. That will get an obstacle out of the way for a lot of people.

Dunno if this is well known already but I just came across it on Hacker News.
