Hey everyone I'm starting to look up laptops for my dad. He's going to be using it at work and home and loves watching movies. I know he wants a 17 inch screen and an HDMI out. I figure getting a buray drive would be great as I want to rip some of his movies onto it. I've done a little research and saw that the new ivybridge laptops are slowly coming out right now so I'm trying to see if its better to wait and get one of those(found one that seems to be a decent deal) or if any laptop now should be good.

I found this deal here. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...stination=review&config_id=7198626&aoid=35252

There's a code that brings it down to $799(NBY4296) which for a newer chipset(I'm pretty sure its ivybridge right?) and bluray sounds like a good deal. Ideas? Thanks

I would get a Sony Vaio. www.sonystyle.com allows you to configure it. you can even engrave it, and write something personal like "dont die on me yet, dad lol. happy fathers day" or "thanks for blowing your load in mom lol" or.. yeah you get the idea. engraving is nice because you can personalize it with a joke. it's a tacky stupid thing, but i gotta admit.. the fact that you get a laser engraving somehow makes you more attatched to the piece of technology.

sorry if i come off as a asshole. but i swear to the spagetti monster - my ipod touch from 2007, i felt so attatched to it because it had my favorite movie quote. i never want to part with it even though i retired it for a running ipod and a iphone.

SORRY FOR BEING AN ASSHOLE.

for a 17 incher you need to careful with good screens. notebookcheck.net has under their review sections, a best multimedia (movie watching) list of laptops. check that one out. they are very good at reviewing desktop screens. be mind ful of viewing angles and speakers if he does not have headphones!!!
