And I'm sure its going to be a complete uphill battle. My current employer told me today that they are considering putting me on as a regular full-time employee in my department INSTEAD of being the manager of the department like I am right now and have been for 2 years. The place is ripe with problems and I have wanted to have an excuse to leave for a while now, so I guess this is my official kick in the ass.
I'm kinda worried though cuz I think the market is super-weak right now. There's people with 2 years of school that are getting fucking $11.00 an hour. I make about $15.00 and I'm only an HSED holder. I don't want to stay at my current job as a regular full-timer either. The fucking place is run like a junior high. Its a retail job (sporting goods actually) and I currently oversee 4 employees (was 12 at one time) who build all the bikes, exercise equipment, service paintball guns, treadmills, tennis raquets, fishing reels, perform home deliveries, and a slew of other things.
My job was always scheduling them, figuring out their commissions, assigning jobs, and all the like. You know, typical manager stuff. Well now they got some other guy coming along and I guess I don't jive with some of the higher-ups because I don't take shit. The assistants to the store manager treat everybody like absolute garbage there. If you are not the store manager or an assistant manager, you are SCUM. There's 14 of the AM's right now and all but 3 or 4 are complete assholes. People who have never had any responsibility like this before, and now they are power-tripping and can't handle it. They have all adapted an abusive style of management that revolves around berating you, intimidating you, and making a huge deal out of any fuckups you have, while promptly ignoring the 99.9% of the shit you get right.
Its bullshit.
The thing is, they get this from the store manager himself. He's got no social skills whatsoever. If you have one thing go wrong, he's bitching at you and never attempts to hear your side of it. I take a lot of shit over deliveries in particular. We end up running late for a fair number of them because we encounter shit beyond our control. For example, one person wants this bigass treadmill delivered to their small little house. We assemble it at the store and then bring it to the house assembled to save time. We get there, and have to totally disassemble it, then rebuild it to get it inside because the hallways/doors are too tiny. This is something the customer did not realize would happen when they looked at it in the store. So now we are behind schedule. This can happen 2 to 3 more times and really fuck us over when we have 5 deliveries in a day. Some days it goes smoothly, but other days this happens. So you book less deliveries in a day, right? WRONG! GRAB THAT CASH! MAKE THAT SALE! WAAAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!! They don't want to lose sales, so they keep squeezing in deliveries like this, knowing damn well that we can easily fall behind if something goes bad.
That's just a small, MINISCULE example of the problems with that place and the incompetent management. They'll do anything to make the sale and not think twice about consequences. 4 deliveries already booked? No problem! Make a 5th! Nevermind that there's only 4 hours to perform all those deliveries in! MWAH HA HA HA!! BRING ME FORTUNE! MAKE ME RICH!!! WAAAAHHHH!!!! Drive to Michigan (2 hours away, one-way) to make a $1,500.00 sale? ANYTHING FOR THE SALE! Hell, go from Green Bay to Fond Du Lac in an hour! (GB is 45 north, FDL is 45 south) "JUST GET IT DONE" <--------Favorite line used by store manager.
Sorry. Unappreciative bastards. We end up staying late so many days because of shit like this. Its ridiculous. Then they bitch at me because my crew is earning overtime hours that they don't want to have to pay them. Unreal.
It really bothers me what they do to my crew too. I have a part-timer who works 39 hours a week. He gets less commission as a part-timer, no benefits, and they have had a full-time position open for a while that they only offered to him when 2 other people turned it down. He's the best worker I've ever had. Why would they offer him full-time? They're making a shitload off of him as a part-timer! He gets HALF the commission, NONE of the benefits, and he's super productive! His commission rate is equal to the other full-timers and he's working at HALF the rate! But do they reward him for this? FUCK NO! Keep that fucker in part-time! Keep giving him 39 hours a week! FUCK YEAH! FUCK. YEAH. It was pretty awesome when he threw the full-time position in their faces though. They finally offered it and he said "it's too late for that now." Now he's having his last day with us next Thursday and I'm very sad about it. He was my best guy by a country mile, he was funny as hell, and overall one of the best guys I've ever known. He deserves to move on from that fucking place. Fuck them. I'm glad for him.
But yeah, long story short, I fucking hate working there anyway and I needed an excuse to leave. So now that I have it, I have no clue as to where I should go now. I really just want some place where I don't have to work weekends and can make around the amount I make now, but I think I may be screwed for a while. It seems like the market is real dry right now.
