I am currently watching the Extended Editions of all three films, and I am utterly amazed at how much the creators managed to accomplish with this work. The art direction is absolutely top class, the acting is impeccable, the music is unmatched, the storyline is gripping, and the films are fully epic. There is good, there is evil, betrayal, greed, hatred, love, pride, vanity, redemption, tragedy, victory...it shows a multitude of human characteristics and deals with each one justly.

I love you, Lord of the Rings. Thank you for providing such an awe-inspiring viewing experience. I feel completely inspired upon watching each movie.

Two Towers is kind of w/e. It's necessary, but that's about all. The other two, however, are indeed great. RotK is brought down by the undead deus ex machina ghosts, so fellowship gets the edge imo.

Those fuckin' hobbit movies were boring as hell. All it was, was a bunch of people walking, three movies of people walking to a fucking volcano.

There's only ONE trilogy.

I didn't know my mom posted on NeoGAF. Great.

I can't tell you how many amazing sex jokes I've gotten out of the "they delved too greedily and too deep" line.

Quoted for great justice. The first one should have won the Oscar, and the fact that it didn't is the only reason why they overcompensated on ROTK.

I love the trilogy but for me it's like...

Fellowship
...
RotK
...
...
...
Towers

I just love Fellowship. One of my favorite movies. RotK is probably just as good but I prefer the setting and tone of the first film.

They are great movies.

Just like the books I found them boring as hell. Well actually I did not even bother watching RotK.

My wife likes them I have never seen them so I have to disagree that they are they great. The potter movies are good though.

Fantastic trilogy; I can't imagine a better interpretation. I'd have to re-watch it to decide if it is better then the original Star Wars trilogy.

As a cinema-experience, it could be called the "Star Wars" of my generation ( I was born in ´86, so I obviously missed the theatrical runs of the original Star Wars -movies ). I anticipated Fellowship of the Ring ever since they announced that they had started filming it ( back in ´99 if I remember correctly ). Heck, I remember watching the first teaser-trailer dozens of times.

And unlike the new Star Wars -movies, LotR actually delivered, and oh how magnificently! I saw all three films at least 3 times in the theaters each, and bought the regular dvd-versions *and* the extended editions. The latter versions are far superior to the theatrical cuts, by the way, and the extras on each of the releases were amazing.

This thread is actually inspiring me to watch the said films again. Back-to-back. :)

Eh, not my thing I guess. I found them pretty boring and got lost in the sea of crazy names of people and towns. They're visually stunning tough, and all around good films, I just wasn't interested.

I recently watched all three, still soooo good. So much done right, very little done wrong.

Fellowship of the Ring is my favourite of the trilogy. Maybe it's because of the closeness to the fiction, but it's probably because it rarely faltered and it really keeps you spellbound through the entire film.

Fellowship = Perfect

Easily in my top 3 favorite movies ever, and I cry watching it every single time without fail

Return of the King is the only one of the movies that Benefits from the Extended Edition imo:

Fellowship Extended = no better, no worse, still just as excellent

Two Towers Extended = Drags way too much

Return of the King Extended = A much fuller, and satisfying movie. Theaterical felt like it was missing something.

decent movies to me AT BEST. Not great and most definitely not greatest movies: too many cuts, too many changes, editing was just horrible

ROTK was just an horrid mess. I almost walked out of the theater

FotR is pretty awesome, it's by far the best of the rings trilogy, it definately works the best as a movie

while i can appreciate TTT and ROTK, they dont work as well as movies for me, they dont rate very highly on the rewatchability factor

Fellowship certainly gets several million points for the absolutely epic opening. I thought the others were sort of meh. RoTK was all right but it took absolutely forever to end. I read the books and know that they cut out the whole scouring of the shire and a few other things, but it still seemed to drag on.

As a huge fan of the books, Fellowship is the only one I really love. I'd probably like the other two a lot more if I hadn't read the books.

But I fucking love Star Wars...

I just can't enjoy Star Wars as much as I used to. :-\ Jedi seems to drag on, and I find that there is a lot more to think about with LotR.

All three were pretty bad, but out of the three, I guess the last was the best. I still don't know what the first was about. I went into it thinking there would be some cool magic or something, but what a snooze.

I don't think it is coincidence that Fellowship is the best of the movies and also the movie that stays closest to the source material.

Greatest trilogy ever imo. Those movies are pretty much flawless (extended editions of course).

They'll definitely be movies I will rewatch every now and then during the next 50 years.

Two Towers is easily my favorite, but I can't say any of the 3 are really that much better than the others. To me they're all like a single 10-12 hour long movie (which is pretty much how they were filmed).

Fellowship is also the book that is by far the most straighforward and thus the easiest for them to stay to the source. Had they followed the narrative of the 2nd and 3rd books in the movies, it would have been a complete mess. In terms of actual events, characters etc. I think they all stay pretty true to the source material. The changes they make are almost exclusively improvements.

The big fight in Two Towers was better than the one in ROTK

Yeah I said it.

i dont think you'll get much argument from anyone there

i'll go a step further, i prefer the theatrical versions over the extended versions of the films (i have both sets on dvd btw)

i find the EEs to be especially meandering, they are probably fan service to fans of the books, but i've never read them so idk

Great movies, but I don't think they're the greatest ever. I really don't think there will be a movie event like them again. People were so hyped for those film and watching them in theatres really made you feel like you were part of movie history. You can tell your children and grandchildren that you actually saw these movies the day they came out.

Best scene in the trilogy.

Jedi drags on but LotR doesn't? I just watched all 3 movies last week and they were sooo long. I rather enjoyed them for the most part (definitely far more than I enjoyed the books, speaking of dragging on..) but I do wish some of it was a bit more condensed.

OP you'll get no love on GAF, but yeah LOTR is amazing in every facet.
Great set of films. Only douchebags and virgins compare it to Star Wars, but whatever.

Can't wait for the Extended Blu-Ray.
