"Solitary". Sayid's life is threatened after he discovers the source of the mysterious French transmission. Hurley concocts a funny plan to bring civility to the island.
Also, remember if you Tivo, this show runs 61 minutes. So record whatever's afterward so you don't get cut off.
Great episode. Fury's by far the best writer. Too bad we have to wait two weeks for the next episode.
By the way, I haven't seen a thread about this, but ABC announced yesterday that Alias will air on wednesdays starting January 5th after Lost, instead of sunday at 9.
Welcome to John Carpenters They on a island the tv series, and I had this whole theroy of lost souls looking for redemption and from what the french lady said it's John Carpenters They or Dreamcather or what ever million and one verisions of that story there are. I liked the episode cause I like Said but this episode was meh. Gave too much away too soon, Kate hated Sawyer last time I check now shes all flirty with him. this seemed like the "If we don't get the full season lets hint to the big surpise" episode...I'll save my wednesday nigths and just watch they again
I didn't think Kate was being flirtatious at all with Sawyer. She's simply trying to include him, instead of condemn him.
As for this ep being "too fast", I think that's just as silly as the "too slow" comments in previous episodes. They simply answered the French Woman question. The island remains as mysterious as it was in the pilot.
So you're giving up on the show because of a theory of yours? Wouldn't it be silly to stop watching the show only to find out that you're wrong? It might be what you think it is, but it probably isn't.
What I feared is starting to come to pass - they've revealed a bit too much. Whether or not I continue to really love this show depends on whether or not there is a lot of mystery left. That may have been an interesting "end of season" episode, but I don't like it where it is
What did they revealed that was to much? We knew there was a French woman on the island. We didn't know if she was dead or alive. She said she killed them but the recording said it killed them all I think. So she might not have killed them.

She started talking about how they got sick, that was new. I'm not entirely certain what everybody wanted...there have to be some sort of revelations at some point. Why not now?
I didn't really care for anything besides the golfing in this one. Sayid's flashbacks were alright, if kinda lame. The French woman sucked. Goddamn, both she and Sayid discover someone else is on the island and they sit around talking about their personal lives? Shut the fuck up and talk about what you know! The episode reeked of unrealistically vague dialogue just for the sake of keeping the plot under wraps.
yeah it seemed a bit metal gear-ish. i mean i wanted more time on sayid's flashbacks, we still dont know much about him. and i scoffed at the frech woman's reluctance to join the rest of the group.

We know the french woman is alive, we know how they arrived, we know she was (conveniently) part of a science team, we know there are 'others' on the island who control where the transmission is coming from, we know that there was apprently some type of disease that killed the others (according to the french woman)
Basically what they did in this episode is dump a lot of information on us very quickly after giving it out slowly over time. It took away a lot of the mystery. While there is a bunch we still don't know, there is a bunch we do know... adn that bunch is actually kinda lame
Hmmm...The skeletons in the cave were 50+ years old, right? Those couldn't have been her bodies...right? ;p I saw a map on her desk, it would be interesting to find out exactly how big the island is, but then again, I suppose that's the mystery of it all.

no, that was her map. he didn't have time in two days to map out the whole island, he stole it from her
This episode barely answered anything. Only that the main suspicion thatthe french were on the island conducting experiments was wrong and they just happened upon the island and all died after 2 months.
Still don't know for sure what happened to Nadia
Don't know why Sayid was in Sydney
The rash guy will become important later on mark my words. You don't just give an extra lines for the hell of it. That costs money. They gave him lines for a very specific reason.
The Ethan guy hunting with Locke will become important.
Michael and Locke will prolly eventually fight because Locke is teaching Walt to throw knives
Kate didn't all of a sudden like sawyer, she understands him. they're both outcasts, only she hides herself well. She just wants to help him assimilate. The past three episodes have built up kate and sawyer
Just what was that cable/rope thing leading into the ocean?
The power source transmitting the distress call isn't the batteries we see. there's gonna be something else. the french chick will be back someday.
She mentioned how the jungle wispers and when Sayid was waking up we heard wispers asking about Alex in like 12 different languages and at the end of the episode, Sayid stats to hear more whispers.
terewas a lot of stuff that came out in this episode.
after watching alias, I think all this is only the tip of the iceberg. with the monster to cover too there are so many different directions they could take
Surprised that no one (in this thread, anyway) has pointed out that
the French woman was named Rousseau. It's obviously no coincidence that the characters Rousseau and Locke have the names they do.
Why that's? Well, for those who do not understand the above reference: Rousseau and Locke are 17th-18th century philosophers. Rousseau thought people were basically good, but thought they were corrupted by society, so people were better off in their "natural state" (simplifying a lot here obviously ) - which fits with Danielle Rousseau living off the jungle by herself and refusing to join the group. Locke believed that people were a "blank slate" and could become good or bad, which I guess COULD fit with Lost's Locke, since he is showing off those two backgammon pieces to Walt? I dunno.
Maybe one of the other survivors we haven't met yet is a Hobbes or a Marx

I assumed that it came from the ship that Rouseau arrived on. I would expect that at some point they will open the map and find a big thing labelled "SHIP" on it and some will go there

At least give us a Calvin so we can make crazy theories!
I didn't feel it gave too much away; I have a feeling that the French transmission is likely only one piece in a puzzle. She was still incredibly vague, incredibly confusing, and generally quite odd. She answered some basic questions: Why they were there, who she was with, that there are more than one polar bear apparently. She answered some basic questions. But she also posed a couple. For instance, "there are no such things (as monsters)". Uh, lady, skinned guy in a tree.
Thought her character was great; reminded me of Lena Olin's Irina Derevko combined with the cat lady from the Simpsons. There are still a whole lot of questions. Like, where does that power cord going out into the ocean lead? Who did she believe Sayid was sent by? Considering it was a Science mission, was Alex born on the island? Is this some sort of parallel to Claire's pregnancy? Is her(preview spoilers)
Trauma in the Preview in relation to some form of nightmare revolving her child and how that child might be related to the other one born of the island? Although, considering that Walt (The kid) has an intense ability to foresee what will occur (Polar Bear, when he wants it to stop raining it stops, etc.) could it be that this Alex kid is somehow running the island and is able to control this stuff, and sees Walt as a companion or something
Plus, folks...French lady ain't dead, and Sayid ain't out of the jungle yet. Claiming this gave too much away is bullshit. Sure, if you're drawing your own conclusion that's fine, but this episode was necessary. The French Woman subplot dragged out for eight episodes, and now it comes to its first of what will likely be multiple peaks. Hell, maybe at some point we'll get flashbacks to see what exactly goes on.
And, Locke's flashback episode was title "Tabula Rosa" (Or something like that) which is blank slate in Latin. So, the philosopher's theory has merit. Considering I'm in Political Science right now, and discussing the two men in questions, it's definitely an interesting way to look at things.
Man, I love this show. I could go on for days. Sure, it answered some questions. But if you're too speculative or lazy to ask more questions, then you might as well stop watching now. As Alias proves, JJ is a fan of WTF moments.
Can't wait for the JJ block in January; two shows to download in one night. Oy vey.
two things in different peoples notes that are incorrect. The lady didn't say they controlled the message, but rather they controlled the power (or did I totally screw that one up? I don't want to get on phoenix's bad side
And the second (which I am sure of) is that those were not wispers sayid heard when he was waking up, that was her, trying to find out what language he spoke. it was clearly her. the wispers at the end of the episode however..

I don't think "they" are controlling the transmission (or I would assume they would have changed it to something else), but rather the place where it is being transmitted from.
I'm curious, I could swear that the French woman was played by that same actress from Babylon 5 who did Dellen. The voice sure as hell sounded like it.

Ehhhh, it didn't give away too much but it made me completely realize that this show has completely "gone X-Files". They will tease and tease at providing answers to questions, but never really come clean. It's only a matter of time before viewers get sick of it and tune out (as they did with X-Files). I say that they can successfully drag this out for 3 seasons at best. X-Files had a "moster of the week" format that they could fall back on when they didn't want to do stories about the overriding plot arch, but there's really not much room to improvise here. It's true that they can do "flashback" episodes for filler, but I think people will mostly find it tiresome....

I don't see this going past two seasons; the thing is, if they didn't keep giving hints, the viewership would be even more frustrated. It's a balance. They've GOT to hint at it, and they've got to keep the mystery alive, while at the same time being a normal show at its core.
It is becoming like an X-Files type scenario in that way, but this ISN'T something that will go on for years and years. I think it's always been viewed as a short-run series. For this reason, I don't think it's such a bad thing. Plus, Lost will have the ability to slingshot in fresh faces and kill off a major character to reallly attempt to bring things to another direction.
This episode was title "Solitary" so no link to Rousseau, unless I'm missing something.
JJ has said he'd be happy if he can get 3 to 4 seasons
Episode 03: Tabula Rasa was a Kate centric episode. locke's episode was Episode 04: Walkabout
Even for a scientist, why did she know like 12 different languages??
Considering the phrase being said was "where is alex" I'd think Alex is very important to her and she thinks he's still alive. Perhaps being help by whoever "They" are.
Did anyone else get a "The Others" or The Thing" vibe off this episode?
Whispering (The Others)
Watch your people, it might get to them (The Thing) and remember how they displayed Vincent in the pilot? All the creepy music. kinda how The Thing started.
So far Mira Furlan is only scheduled for this episode.

She said Alex was her child, so yeah, naturally Alex is important to her.
I think the key thing to remember though is that most everything that came out of her mouth can be called into question. She's been alone for a very long time and was a bit crazy. Taking what she says as absolute truth and the correct interpretation of events that we don't know about is a stretch.
Alex isn't a human being. She's obviously "lost" because she's gone mad from lack of companionship. Alex is a thing or an entity which Rousseau created.
The way the french woman was going on it sounded like all the survivors contracted some kind of illness that meant they should never rejoin society (thats why she says she shot her husband, and he had the other gun so its not some kind of mutation thing) which makes me think back to locke and his miraculous escape i think maybe he's already 'infected'
Though its obvious that by making the french lady insane JJ gave himself a way to do a complete 180 on whatever she said (including there being worse things than bears on the island)
The question still remains though WHO THE FUCK hit Saiyd with a log?
A slight spoiler I read, coincides with my speculation.
Claire baby is somehow related to the island; I still think Alex was born on the island, was somehow taken away from Danielle, and Claire's baby is in some way another catalyst to something. Like maybe it was the birth of Alex which began the scourge of the people. Who knows...difficult to tell, at this point.
Episode 10: Raised by Another
Jack, Kate and Charlie wonder if Claire's disturbing nightmares might be coming true to threaten her life and the life of her unborn child, and a missing castaway returns with frightening news about what lies just beyond the mountains.
Episode 11: All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues
Survivors wonder why Charlie and the pregnant Claire have been abducted - and by whom - and a search party ventures into the treacherous jungle to try to find and rescue the missing duo. Meanwhile, inner-demons about his father resurface for Jack, and Boone and Locke discover another island mystery.
Interesting... I am still real curious about why (spoiler?)
the actress that plays Claire is not a main cast member
She's only signed on for 7 episodes this season. You have to pay a lot more if an actor has a speaking role. Which is why all the extras aren't getting involved. Like people were asking when we'd get a Rose centric episode and stuff. She was only signed on for 3. She might be in the background here and there, but not a large part. This doesn't mean she won't be bigger in season two. Keep in mind a main charactor and several extras will be dying this season
Bit bigger of a spoiler (at your won risk)
I've seen some screenshots of the episode after charlie and claire are abducted. It had jack, Charlie and Kate sitting at a campfire and charlie looked absolutely devestated and they looked to be consoling him. Doesn't mean she's dead, but perhaps he was the only one who escaped?
