LTTP: American Gangster (Jay-Z album)

I slept on this when it was released because of the bad taste that Kingdom Come left in my mouth.

Having finally listened to it this week, I feel like an idiot for not getting it at release.

This is now my favorite Jay album. Definitely his most lyrically complex. The beat selection is a throwback to the 90's during the days of Reasonable Doubt, Life After Death and Cuban Linx.

My favorite tracks are American Dreamin', Blue Magic, I Know, Ignorant Shit and Fallin'.

EDIT: FUCK! Wrong forum. :(

wrong part of the forum?

but yeah it was a good album, not The Blueprint quality though or heck even The Black Album was better.

In before stupid waggle comment.

And yeah, Blueprint was better. Grey Album was even better than that, but I guess that's a little OT, considering he didn't work on the beats, which is the part I found so addictive.

He doesn't work on the beats anyway. He's not a producer.

Bad choice of words - I didn't mean to imply that he did, just that he had no involvement in the Grey Album beats in any capacity.

no offense to the OP, but whenever a thread pops up on the wrong board, it always looks really dumb. the topic itself, and the post. everything. it's like a wake up call that when message board posts are taken out of context, they're really pathetic

no. the beats sound throwback because lots of the effects and shit sound old school, but nothing on the album comes CLOSE to any of those mentioned albums, production wise

I don't know why people hate Kingdom Come so much. Yeah, it was unbalanced, but had some amazing tracks. Kingdom Come, Beach Chair (or whatever it was called), and especially Lost Ones were amazing. The last verse from Lost Ones is my favorite Jay-Z verse ever.

btw, about American Gangster, I love how cinematic the album is. Pray, Fallin, and Roc Boys are my favorite tracks. Actually, the only weak track is Hello Brooklyn

Say Hello is my shit.

Good album, but Reasonable Doubt is still my favorite. Can't Knock the Hustle, Brooklyn's Finest, Friend or Foe, Feelin' It, etc.

Great Album. I was surprised Jay-Z could rebound after Kingdom Come with this. I'd probably rank it as his fourth best album behind Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint and Black Album. Hello Brooklyn was not well received because of the beat. If you listen to the Marvin Gaye Remix of the song, it actually makes it listenable.

Roc Boys, Sweet, Say Hello, Ignorant Ish, Success, I Know, Party Life are all stand out tracks.

Pray, Blue Magic, American Dreamin, American Gangster were okay.

Yup, Reasonable Doubt is just too damn good. Don't forget Dead Presidents II, Can I Live and D'Evils.

Yeah... no. So pretentious.

Didn't really like American Gangster that much.

Yeah, it's not The Blueprint or The Black Album (and there are a few other Jay-Z albums I prefer, too) - but it's solid.

Ignorant Shit is the best song.
