Another year, another classic anime film adaptation that slipped past my radar. Only this time not only will there not be a sequel, but the studio itself (Imagi) shut down. And just like the poorly received Speed Racer, Astro Boy not only lived up to its legacy, it excelled as its own film. An excellent coming of age/finding your place in the world story, with some really gorgeous animation, great voice acting (Bill Nighy, and Freddie Highmore were standouts), and top notch action set pieces.

Not only do I feel bad for having missed this in theaters, I feel almost dirty having rented it from Redbox. I'm ordering the Blu-ray from Amazon ASAP.

Saw it in theaters, bought the DVD.

Fantastic film. It doesn't break new ground or anything, but it's a very well-done film and deserved to do much better than it did.

And everyone ignores the thread like they did the film. :lol I guess I was wrong. Speed Racer is as popular as Avatar by comparison.

I actually saw this in the theater since my daughter wanted to see it. It wasn't bad. Not up to Pixar quality but it was decent.

Sorry to say this but I found Astro boy a real disappointment...

Sure the animation and voice acting was great but I really disliked how it didn't follow the original's storyline that well.

It felt like a Dragon ball evolution kind of story line to me (but alot better)

you shouldn't ever invoke the great name of speed racer lightly, there better be people here willing to back up that this movie is rad.

Speed Racer is awesome.

I'm not even sure this movie really exists, folks.

well Speed Racer was considered bad by many people, yet it is amazing.

this dude is claiming Astro Boy is similarly awesome...

lol i THINK it exists. all-star voice cast iirc, and it bombed spectacularly

Many stupid people.

I literally never heard a word about it releasing. I'll have to see proof. Astro Boy is classic and I can't believe this just slipped by.

Two random thoughts:

1. I want to see a Megaman CG movie :lol He's basically an Astro Boy ripoff anyway.

2. Now all the American anime adaptations have performed poorly: Dragonball, Speed Racer (fuck the masses), and now Mighty Atom... At some point we were supposed to see a live action Eva, Akira, and even Ninja Scroll... I think Hollywood had its flirtation with anime adapatations and they've totally flunked it, so I think new projects like that are sunk.

Don't use Speed Racer's name in vain please.
Period.

Also, I feel bad for Imagi. While a lot of the stuff they did was an ineffective use of resources, they were/are definitely better than Dreamworks.

Sad seeing good talent go to waste.

Speed Racer is overrated.

I liked but come on GAF, masterpiece? No!

Besides some of the monkey/kid scenes, cha it was.
What more do you want in an adaptation of a Japanese cartoon? SRSLY.

Beautiful visuals. Interesting story. Emotional weight. Good moral.

It was a good movie guys, I liked it a lot, but its not that great to me.

Lets agree to disagree, I don't want to be a Costanza.

More kids should have seen that movie.. I'm glad your son was one of them!

It is a masterpiece. Now, I wouldn't say it's the new Citizen Kane... that would be hubris.... But it is rather like the Citizen Kane of the 21st century... I think that's fair.

Shut your goddamn mouth. Yes, Dreamworks have pumped out a lot of terrible, pop-culture infused talking animal shit.

But you know what? They're allowed to. Because they also gave birth to the finest animated feature that is The Prince of Egypt.

Imagi doesn't come close.

I saw it three times in theatres. To me, it's something of a masterpiece.

Big claim in the title.. I've been meaning to check this out for a while. Guess I'll just have to now.

I found the movie to be decent but I did enjoy it. Its plot did have several references to Battle Angel Alita.

To do that, you would have to say the movie sucked and get caught 5 weeks later letting it slip that you never actually saw it.

Saw this in theaters last year. Pretty generic storyline, but it's not so bad.
It's a real shame Imagi went under, Gigantor looked pretty good.

Imagi closed? That means no Gatchaman?

I blame myself for not seeing Astro Boy like I intended. I'm so so sorry, Science Ninja Team. :'(

Meanwhile, I'm gonna watch Speed Racer. You better be right, Gaf.
