LTTP: DOA4

DOA2U was the best in my opinion, it was so fun online. The best thing about it was that it came with 2 discs and both could play doa2u online, i gave the second disk to a friend and we played for months.

Wait...the DOA1 disc also had DOA2:U on it?! You're blowing my mind here.

Yeah only the online part though, it is strange. I have never seen anything like it before or since. It's been a while but i think it's just an option under the online mode.

Anyone got any tips on how to get better at it?

Some quick tips of the top of my head. If you need me to elaborate abit more then just ask.

  • Seeing as you've already previous doa's, and seeing as the counter system is now more complex it may be worth your while to pick a character that can parry - therefore narrowing the guessing game. Kasumai, Eliot, Gen fu, Hitomi ( kinda), Lei fang and Bayman all have parries. Eliot's will produce the most stun.

  • DOA is completely based on a triangle system. Holds( i.e counters and catch grabs.) beat Attacks, Attacks beats Throws and Throws beat Holds.

  • If you're in trouble and can't figure out how to counter your opponent then try 'slow excaping', which essentially makes your character step backwards out of a stun. It even works when your back is turned. If done enough during a match it will also prevent your oppenent from juggling you at a wall. To do it hold the free button (X) and start doing circles on the pad.

  • Pressing the kick or punch button on their own will produce a high attack. Be aware of this when playing the more skilled as they know that most people will throw out nothing but high attacks and can therefore simply counter them over and over again.

  • Alpha can't counter, only teleport. So to beat her easily just use an attack such as Brad's running (or QCF) P or Hayabusa's Ninpo (Teleport) attacks.

  • If you like speedy characters then Kasumai and Christie are the fastest in the game . Both have a 9 frame jab. Everyone else is 10.

  • If you block an opponents low attack then a small window of opportunity opens where you can safely low throw or hold them.

Also essentially all attacks can be countered, evening running attacks. And you can sideside Hayabusa's teleport attacks.

Can anyone else confirm that doa2u online play was on the doa1 bonus disc? I can't find it online anywhere and my copy is long gone :(

The stages were worse then DOA3 and DOAU, they just didn't graphically blow you away like the other two games and were overall just boring. Only Team Ninja could pull off a sequel on a new system having graphically less impressive levels

the last boss I thought was the worst ever in gaming............until I played Seth. the online play was lag hell also

but other then that it was pretty enjoyable, my first 360 game

Also one more thing - the A.I knows full well how to counter. This can be seen particularly well during survival mode. It won't matter if you don't mix-up your routine either, as it seems the computer will automatically counter you when it wants depending on your keypresses. Set the difficulty up high and play against a grappler character, and you will get countered considerably more.

A cool little trick to play on the A.I is to constantly attack it and then suddenly stop. There will be a brief awkard period were it won't know what to do and then it will attempt a throw, which you can easily avoid.

Yes, and if you were playing DOA1U and got an invite to a DOA2U match you would not have to switch discs. The discs are identical except for one text file that tells the executable to boot up DOA1 or DOA2 by default.

Graphically they were blow the rest of the levels in the series out of the water. Aesthetically DOA3 had the best stages.

from a pixel to pixel standpoint, yes, DOA4 blows out the previous DOA titles. But let us also not act like at from a visual standpoint DOA4 was anything more then DOA3.5. You're right about there being not beautiful snow/water/lightning... stage

My save file got corrupted a couple years ago, and after that I stopped playing until recently. (If you ever need to switch profiles, make sure you exit all the way out to the dashboard first.) I'd love to see some friendly online games happen.

I remember playing against The Faceless Master back when DOA2U had just recently been released; back then, he was one of only a handful of people online who could use slow escapes.

Visually the levels were more realistic(which isn't as fun), but they were also much bigger and there was more to do. Kyoto in bloom, the bridge, the shopping strip, vegas, halo level, etc. . . were massive.

My save file became corrupted aswell when my x360 red ringed. It turned out to be a blessing though as now i'll never get tengu or anyother character i don't like enough to unlock when i go random.

iirc, both disks had the exact same data on them except for like one line in a config file that decided if doa1 or doa2 booted up... or something like that...

Never liked the counter system in the series, felt too much like rock-paper-scissor.
Think it was DoA2 that I had for PS2 (and probably still have) that felt cheap, where counter would take like a third of ur health.

DOA4 is awesome! I used to play a lot. Didn't have that much problems with the online either. I think I have played about 3500 online matches and a shitload of offline matches too.

Hopefully Itagaki makes a new 3D fighting game since it is the only one I really like. VF, Tekken or Soul Calibur just don't reach me...

I played DOA4 pretty regularly for a while last year. The game is flashy and beautiful, but pretty clearly falls short of series like Virtua Fighter and Tekken from a competitive standpoint. (For my money, nothing matches the feel of Tekken. Its controls and physics are so right.) Still, DOA4 is fun to play when that blue slattern Alpha-152 isn't ramming ridiculous flurries of attacks down your throat. Grinding Time Attack for costumes when I didn't have XBL was a mistake, let me tell you.

When I read something like that, it makes me wonder: was Tekken the first 3D fighter you really got into? Is the reason it feels so right simply because your time with it kind of trained you to expect that feel out of a 3D fighter? That's an honest question; I really don't know. I ask because in my case, Tekken controls and physics feel completely wrong. It's not something I can place my finger on, but Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive, and Soulcalibur all feel fine.

In my opinion, the flashy style, accessibility, and four-player tag are what makes DOA great. If you've got a friend who's not good at fighters - or someone's girlfriend - he or she can still have a great time in tag mode, paired up with the best player in the group. As a competitive or tournament fighter though, I do think Virtua Fighter is better.

Alpha-152 isn't a pain in the ass anymore once you realised you could defeat her by spamming a single move over and over (instead of trying to play 'fancy'), as long as you were somewhat patient in the process. That's all I ever did against the final boss, so it didn't take long for me to unlock all the characters.

I really liked this game.

Too bad the online was broken.

Huh? I got the game back in 2006, and have played it consistently since. It's by far the least laggy 3d fighter on the 360. 12,000+ matches and the occasional moments of lag usually end up being me forgetting to turn off a torrent somewhere.

For some reason I can see the new Team Ninja making Ninja Gaiden 3, but abandoning the DOA franchise entirely. DOA was Itagaki's baby since the beginning, and essentially the entire staff who created DOA1-4 has left. I would be shocked if a DOA5 is ever made.

I don't like the sound of that, but I guess you are right. It does seem like a small chance of DOA5 ever coming :(

Of the fighters this gen DOA4 is the one I have always returned to. It's fast, fun and very easy to pick up with friends.

If Tecmo would like to stay alive, despite their merge with Koei, they're not going to have a choice but to. It is one of their biggest selling franchises.

And never forget about this video:

I know DoA's place in competitive fighting well, but if you're playing the counter game like rock paper scissors, you're doing it wrong. every once in a while you might land a bunch of lucky counters since there's always a 25% chance to guess correctly, but you're only supposed to do it when you can see what's coming from the start-up frames of a move or if your opponent is super predictable.
