Finally finished this yesterday and yeah, all of Whedon's praise (most of it anyway) is much deserved

First work of his I've read and my first foray into X-Men since being a kid in the 90s.

The quality of the writing is pretty damn great. Very sharp and just overall fun (Logan get's some fantastic lines)!
I honestly never got bored or dozed off (which tends to happen to me alot when I read).
I'm not a huge fan of John Cassaday's art-style but it's still very much accomplished and really pops within the actual omnibus
...Speaking of which I can't recommend enough and it's really a steal at around $47 on Amazon.
Honestly can't recommend this collection enough. It sounds cheesy but it really did make me feel like a kid again when I read it and reminded me that I did love the X-Men growing up and am now gonna keep up with 'em.

Thinking of going back and hitting Morrison's New X-Men run as the omnibus is coming out soon. I've heard mixed things on it though ncluding Frank Quitely's art which is supposedly hit or miss in it.

They should have just copied this run, panel for panel AND dialogue for dialogue and it would have worked as an X-man film.

Fox/Marvel must be kicking themselves for letting that opportunity slip by.

Hell, Whedon's laughing his ass all the way to the bank now that he's The Director For The Biggest Comic Movie Ever.

Nolan and Whedon probably call each other up just to see whose pile of money is bigger.

Dialogue sure maybe, but I don't know if some of the actual panel stuff would translate that well to the screen. Specifically the "Danger" AI and finale.
Didn't X-Men 3 just rip off the "Gifted" arc from this anyhow?

Are you kidding? Danger could've become a hell of an iconic villain. A vaguely female murderous female robot? Terminatrix sucked, but get some HR Geiger art in there and DangerAI becomes an eerie fetish retardant robot of sharp steel.

Eh, it bastardised some elements of it.

I agree that Danger as a character probably wouldn't have translated well on-screen. I found her character quite unbelievable in the comic in the first place.

Yeah, for sure she's probably the weakest bit in there

Whedon's Astonishing X-Men is indeed very good and among the best X-Men comic book series.
If you liked it, try reading Morrison's New X-Men...which is more or less the prequel; Astonishing continues some of the ideas Morrison wrote about in New X-Men.
Unfortunately however, the art in New X-Men may not appeal to everyone as I think there were some issues where the art was rushed.

I think Danger would have worked. The artwork was limited and made her TOO humanoid. Imagine her crawling around and shifting limbs unnaturally, shifting from humanoid to arthropod on the ceiling to this head-twisting monstrosity with weird bio-organic tentacles slithering around as she dodges attacks and stretches limbs obscenely to pierce and cut.

Think t-1000 but with modern choreography.
