LTTP living room stereoscopic 3D on PS3

so in the last week, my 3D tv (passive 55") arrived and I've played a fair few games and watched a few movies. Loving it. Impressions:

One of the main things about 3D is that its suddenly making games that got old feel fresh - dragged out a whole bunch of games and tested them.

SuperstardusT HD. amazing looking game in 3D. Best showcase. Played a lot of this. constantly wowed by it. Sooo good.

Uncharted3. I think the game doesn't hold up to 3D that well. In the cutscenes, it looks great but in game, a bit too shimmery/aliased for my liking. Seemed like it was missing resolution I was quite disappointed in this one. I don't think the ps3/gameengine holds up to the 3Dness too well.

Wipeout 30fps. but this looks great. I only played 4 tracks but I can't wait to revisit. Everything looks good.

Pain Had it on my PS3. had to download a patch. Its kind of blah, and the game is hopeless so....

Pacific Rift 3D I didn't realise this was a $10 PSN title - had popped in the disc and was like where is the 3D settings. Ended up buying this and played a few stages. Quite impressive flying through the jungle in the air. Nice

Motorstorm Apocalypse alongside M:PR, I quite like playing this in 3D, you seem to be able to see further and the game is bonkers per normal; except that its really cool in 3D. There's something about driving games and the ability to see down the horizon/distance really adds a lot to the game. Buildings falling apart in 3D is wow. What is amazing? The fact that even the 2D cutscenes popout in 3D. I was like lol.

Child of Eden so I bought the game knowing I'll have the tv and I am underwhelmed. I love REZ and this game and the japanese(?) Lumi made me go "ehhh" wtf is up with this. extremely underwhelmed by COE, so, I think that's more of my issue with the game than 3D. its looks cool though.

I have a couple more games but impressions to come. SOTC+ICO is on loan with a friend and I've yet to play the PSP origins2 GOW game. Everything old is kind of new again. I see myself playing a lot more motorstorm. Can't wait for next gen consoles and 3D. the resolution bump will alleviate some of my niggles with the experience so far.

re: movies. watched Transformer3 (darksideofthemoon) and you just can't help but be wowed at just how good the cgi work in this was. I forgot how boring the start was but once the action starts going. I am so glad I bought the 3D tv.

Welcome to the party. I'm a bit surprised at the amount of hate that 3D gets. I was completely indifferent until I got my 3DTV. But after that I was sold on it very quickly.

Crysis 2 looks great in 3D on a big TV. Definitely worth checking out.

On the movie side of things, Prometheus and Closer to the Edge both look amazing as well.

It was fun to look at a few games but there was not enough draw to keep playing the games that I own. I agree with you about Uncharted 3, it looked horrible. I enjoyed the Sonic Generations demo in 3D. I just never got around to buying it.

A lot of the hate is misdirected, a strong dislike of the current limits of 3D rather than of 3D itself. I've said before that if 3D were "free", or in other words if it required no special effort from the user, few people, if anyone, would turn it off. It'd be like turning off stereo for monoraul on your TV.

That said, there's no reason we can't enjoy it now. Prepare to be dizzied by the newfound sense of scale in Shadow of the Colossus. Worth experiencing from start to finish in stereo 3D.

well, it feels a lot like that now that I have this tv. Its just a feature that's built in. I used passive glasses I got from the cinema (even though it came with 4x) and it works and it looks great. I'm quite pleased with it in all honesty.

I hope game makers have it as an option next gen. Will be great with a more robust platform to work with.

The sheer amount of 3D enabled titles already available is pretty amazing actually. Pretty much all of the various HD collections are 3D. I've been playing Ratchet and Clank in 3D and it's just fantastic.

Try Tumble in 3D with the Move. It's just crazy. So is House of the Dead Overkill with 3D and the Sharpshooter in co-op. It's better than any arcade experience I have ever had.

I never went after 3D gaming. Hell, I had a 3D TV for months before I ever thought to even try it. Once I did, I can't get enough of it. It is just straight up fun.

-3D big support in home consoles is 'exclusive' to one of the 3 main 1st parties, so fanboy related attacks affect here
-To wear glasses sucks for a lot of people
-Requires expensive TVs
-Supported by a 'small' number of games as of now
-Dizziness or headaches with some type of 3D for some people, specially in long play sessions
-Requires to reduce resolution or FPS when used
-People who doesn't use 3D would want this dev budget to be spent in the 2D version

I'm pretty sure than other than that people would love it.

I love 3D I just cant see how people can tolerate it specifically on PS3 where it drops already loltastic image quality to half of even that. At least on PC you can just powerhouse it, and 3DS is designed around it so everything is full resolution.

You will love SOTC. It looks amazing in 3D IMO. When you are on the back of a gigantic colossus, its nothing short of jaw dropping. I cant go back to regular 2D after that. ICO looks pretty nice too.

Sadly no other HD collection is on par with that. In the Jak collection, 3D is barely noticeable. Sly is similar although I have only played the first one so far.

If you really wanna see lolworthy bad graphics, try Resistance 3 in 3D. I know "PS2 graphics" is used as a hyperbole a lot but Resistance 3 actually does look like a PS2 game.

I love 3D though. I hope its well supported next gen.

The sense of depth in SOTC is amazing, its like the world stretches through the back of the TV, through the wall and into the next room.

Crysis 2 looks sweet as well.

This isn't true at all. I do most of my 3D gaming on xbox. Arkham City, Black Ops 2, Crysis 2, and most of my HD collections are on xbox as well. After playing Halo Ann. in 3D, I was really disappointed that Halo 4 was missing the option. 3D gaming is in no way exclusive to the PS3.

Really enjoying the 3D on my new TV (active).
I LOVE it in Child of Eden. SO GOOD.
Playing through GoW Saga and going through the PSP ones in 3D. It's alright, bit of ghosting in areas with bright lighting on Kratos but not bad.
Didn't like UC3 in 3D. The lower res takes away a lot.
Not yet played any 360 games in 3D though. Need to tey Halo Anniversary as I heard that has 3D and I've yet to play through that.

I suspect that's why he put "exclusive" in parentheses. The truth of the matter is that Sony made a big marketing push for 3D in large part because they wanted to sell their TVs. Microsoft added support for it but did so quietly. I suspect the fanboy hate is actually quite small, but given the different degrees each company gave to their support, It's possible it may play a role in all the bitching.

That said, a lot of the complaints are understandable. I thoroughly enjoy gaming in 3D, but I too hate the glasses. I get a bit dizzy while gaming. I hate that most games drop resolutions or framerate or both. I simply accept it as the price to experience something interesting and, in many cases, immersive.

Hopefully next-gen consoles will support 3D more rather than less. Given that current HDMI bandwidth only supports 1080p 3D at 24fps (which is unacceptable for gaming) and assuming 2D 1080p at 60fps becomes commonplace (lolright?), 720p stereo 3D at 60fps would be a reasonable feature most games could support. A guy can dream, right.

At least the Oculus Rift appears to be getting a lot of buzz, and that's also stereo 3D. If it's anywhere near as good as impressions make it sound, I'll be there day 1.

Fire up a level of Killzone 3 and prepare to say wow. Things like 3D ashes swirling about you in the heat of battle will blow you away.

I didn't know Pacific Rift was 3D. Thanks, can't wait to check it out.

I already wear glasses so wearing another pair of goggles on top of those is a non-starter for me.

I tried Wipeout HD in 3D - the performance hit alone made it not worth the effort, since one of the big draws for me is smooth 60fps action. Also tried Gran Turismo 5 - 3D effect didn't seem very interesting and it gave me a headache almost immediately.

3D in its current form seems super gimmicky and I hope it dies soon.

I really like 3D and while you have have your opinion I beg to differ. 3D is here to stay definitely. As for your gaming problem how about playing on a PC for high performance 3D. the PS360 simply don't have enough power to give you a good experience. I was surprised they can do 3D at all! For the headache part you need to watch more 3D. Your eye muscles are adjusting to this new way of seeing stuff and some strain will initially cause some strain.

Because its existence hurts you and you can't just, you know, ignore it if you don't like it?

Indeed, I can and do ignore it. But arguably, if TV manufacturers, console builders, and game developers are pouring resources into 3D, that could be taking away from, you know, things that I do like. I just think that in a contracting market I would prefer developers to concentrate on other things.

My 32" Samsung full LED 3D 1080P was £299.99. 3D doesn't really seem like it costs much extra anymore.

It's mildly more expensive, if at all. That's just one early misconception that has stuck, sort of like the notion that LCD TVs are superior to plasmas.
