LTTP: Modded Xboxes are awesome.

Hmm... I might try to soft mod the old one i own.

A question: Besides running pirated Xbox games, is there any other reason for a mod chip?

OK, you're slow. Or haven't read the thread.

Emulation

Region-less DVD player

XBMC of course (play music, movies, view pics, stream content from internet)

These can't be done with a soft mod? That's the suck!

WTF. The question is to ask for reassurance that soft modding will provide all I need, which does not include ability to run pirated Xbox games.

Geez, some of the posters here are so ridiculously fixated on seeming cool at the expense of trying to make others look bad.

Oh I didnt see you were asking the differences between soft and hard mods. Soft mods can do the same stuff as hard mods. I think the only difference is getting it to work with Xbox Live if you wish to use that.

totally false.

softmod is very easy if you can get another modded xbox just for 10 minutes and do a hot swap to launch a softmod disc installer like zxbinstaller.

Ah! Rock! Thanks.

Don't forget to enable the web client in XBMC. You can control the app (play music, video, view images) from your PC/laptop.

I don't have any playlists setup but I want to play a whole CD and when I click on the file it only plays the selected track. Can the whole folder be played?

Softmods are very easy to work with Xbox Live. No switches necessary. Just put in an original game, and you can play on Live normally.

Just tried ePSXe under xdsl.

It does seem to be better overall, but the window and general inconvenience is a dealbreaker for me.

There's a way around that. Hold your left analog stick on controller 2 up a little when XDSL loads. It will force the mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen when idle. As long as you don't map any control inputs to the analog sticks and move the workdesk bar to the top of the screen there are no inconveniences. It even makes the resident evils playable despite the up is forward crap.

only downside is that the xbox isn't powerful enough to play high def movies...but can play just about anything else. Can't wait until the 360 gets cracked because you know Microsoft is unwilling to match the XMBC feature set.

Are there any guides out there that detail everything from installing a chip like Xcuter3 all the way to installing/setting up various emulators, playing divx movies, etc? I've been meaning to mod my XBox for forever, but now all the advancements and possibilities make it seem overwhealming. I know xboxscene.com is a great resource, but there's no real definitive guide...

Here's a site I found really useful when modding and upgrading and repairing my Xbox. Although the parts on the site aren't cheap, the walk throughs are really nice with pictures and explaination of tools you'll need.

what features do you find that use as well as what oyu don't use on your modded xbox

anything special i should look for

thanks

So to get back on topic, anybody out there with a modded box have any suggestions for me? Programs I have to try, things I have to do, etc?

You should really check out Super Mario War. It's a 4-player Super Mario Bros-themed deathmatch game, and it's pretty much the most hilarious thing ever when you play with a few friends. You can find it here.

Thanks bobby! I've got some friends coming into town this weekend and this'll be perfect.

The game is pure meyham. Ridiculously fun.

I'd like to note though, that we really shouldn't allow linking to xbox executables in here. Microsoft could get pissy because the executables are illegal.

I'd like to go ahead and ask. What the heck do I have to do to softmod a friend's Xbox? What exactly will I need? I've got a chipped box, so there's one step out of the way if that's needed.

I've been reading up on it thanks to this thread -- looks like you'll need:

- A copy of a game that can be exploited (I believe you can pick from three: Splinter Cell, Bond: Agent Under Fire, and one other one). The game must not be a player's choice copy
- An Xbox Action Replay
- An Xbox Memory Card

Then, load the Xbox Memory Card into Action Replay. Connect the Action Replay to your computer and download the appropriate save for the game you are using to the memory card (these save files can be found quite easily). Load the memory card save onto your Xbox's hard drive, load the save file (make sure you look up a tutorial since how you do this part may depend on what game you are using) and you're good to go.

OK, if I've got a modded Xbox, will I need the action replay? Or for that matter, will I even need a memory card? Can I hook his hard drive into my Xbox and FTP the save onto his HD?

The action replay is a memory card. You have to use one in addition to that one? If so, that would explain why all my attempts at soft modding a couple years ago failed.

Get Krayzie's Installer. Makes it a breeze, or so I hear.

Think about that for a second...

I'm no authority on the subject, but I would think that would work.

All the Xbox-Scene tutorials I've tried reading seem to be written very very poorly. I've been interested in either softmodding or flashing his TSOP for a long time, but I've never made any progress with those tutorials.

And DCB: I honestly don't know. I know I can easily FTP the save over, but the memory card might need to be involved for some reason. Perhaps the exploited code will only run from a memory card or something.

From what I understand, the Xbox hard drives are locked to a specific Xbox, so you can't take one from one Xbox and pop it in another and start using it. You would have to unlock the HDD first, pop it in to the new Xbox, FTP the save file back on there, and then somehow relock it to the first Xbox. I'm not really familiar with how you would go about doing that though.

just do a hot-swap between the modded xbox and the the retail one, is the easiest method

I have an modded Xbox too.

I want to trade the other way though. My Xbox+2 controllers+ Monster Component cables for a Mint PSP.
Anyone up for the offer PM me.

Ecrofirt said:
What do you mean by hot-swap?

you need to open both xbox, and put the retail xbox at the left side of the modded xbox.
put an exploit installer disc on the dvd drive of the modded xbox and turn it off, the turn on both xbox at the same time connect the ide cable of the modded xbox to the HDD of the retail (you need to do this inmediatly after the boot animation).

You will have access of the hdd of the retail xbox in the modded one, now you can use the installer disc or the ftp connection to installl the exploit in that HDD.

I may be modding my Xbox soon as well. For the last while I've had a PC running Windows Media Center Edition as part of my living room entertainment center, but I'll be retiring that PC soon. So if I order DVR service from my cable company and mod my Xbox, that'll provide most of the functionality that I'll lose after I remove the PC.

So thanks to everyone who provided links in this thread. I've bookmarked them for future use.

Note to all: Softmodding lets you do pretty much everything a modchip does, and once you do it to one Xbox, you can do it to many.

The biggest hurdle is getting the saved game onto the Xbox. If you can get a Pro Action Replay memory card dongle or a Mega X-Key and rent/buy Splinter Cell, Mech Assault, or 007: Agent Under Fire (I think there are more), you're set.

If you dig around in the XBox-Scene.com forums, you'll find a thread that allows you to converts a standard USB thumbdirve into high capacity storage memory card. So it's not very hard at all. (I used my Mega-X-Key and saved myself the trouble).

Install Action replay for Xbox software (google). Get an xbox to usb adaptor. Install the drivers for it on your pc then plug the control in. after it's detected plug in your memory card. When it detects the memory card and asks for drivers for it direct it to the drivers section of the action replay for xbox.

Then just grab the Krayzie ndure softmod exploit for whichever of the 3 games you own. (I've always had the best luck with Mech assault). Load the save onto your memory card using the action replay software. Transfer the save to your xbox and the rest should be self explanatory.

Do what he says!! It's the best way! And you can use Xbox controllers to play on your PC as a bonus! :D

if anyone had problems like me getting XMBC to stream. (dont know why i couldnt get it working)

check out ccXstreamGUI.

it's fantastic to finally have it working :D

I love my modded Xbox!

It's like living in the future! People in 2010 are going to go crazy about all the things we already had in 2004!

Music, movies, games, news: all in one tiny little device.

Okay, so it's not so tiny...

when i tryed to softmod i accidentally deleted my HD, now I have a broken xbox and my only hope is to hotswap. So what do I need for that?

One question about XBMC
I've read somewhere that if your xbox is connected through component, xbmc can upscale dvd's to 720p. Is it true ? do they look better than 576p on a hdtv (kind of doubt it, unless the tv scaler sucks) ?

Also, but this is probably out of question, can xbmc stream and play 720p movies from PC ?
thanks

I love XBMC! :D I'm giving my parents my modded US XBox and modding my UK XBox (used for Live) and I'll show them how to stream their music etc.

Microsoft could match the feature set in a heartbeat if they wanted to, but they have a lot of legal and business issues to contend with. The XBMC doesn't have those worries at all, I mean the software itself is illegal anyway.

actually, the XBMC devs only release source code, which is legal, it's 3rd parties who compile and release the illegally compiled executables (cuz you can only compile with tools from an XDK) so the end users can run it...

:lol

It's like shooting someone but pulling the trigger by manipulating someone elses hand!

If I didn't already have a Media Center PC this would win all.

BocoDragon said:

It's even better than a Media Center PC in some ways! I have both, and the Xbox outperforms my media center in several ways.

Modded Xboxes are the best thing since bread. And its definitely worth the effort to replace the stock fans as well, they can be fairly noisy when watching your late night divx.

I've just purchased a Xbox with a Mod Chip that can turn off... so it just boots normally am I safe to play on Live with games I bought?

As long as you are running retail BIOS and have a retail game in, you are fine. I played Phantom Dust on my modded box for a while back when it came out, then I accidentally logged on. Had to buy a whole new box. I will probably mod this one too eventually.

I have a Xenium ICE.

Thanks Demi,

Yeah not sure what my one is but i picked it up for a cheap for XBMC :lol But still want to be able to play a game or two on Live. Just got to wait for it to be delivered :(
