Monster Hunter is one of those franchises I tried to get into several years ago, and despite it not clicking with me back then I've always been interested in giving it a second chance.
I bought MH3U back on 3DS, when I wasn't really feeling it I bought it again for WiiU thinking maybe better performance and a second analogue stick would make the difference, but it didn't really change my perception of the game (other than making the awful underwater missions slightly less awful) and eventually I dropped it.
Over time I've come to realize that maybe my biggest issue was playing it solo when it seems like a big part of the appeal is hunting with friends.
So me an a couple of friends have been looking for a new co-op game and I suggested we pick up MH world. It's not really their usual type of game (they are more into shooters) but since it's super cheap now and they have heard the buzz about the game over the years I managed to convince them.
Yesterday we tried our first hunt and, after a rather lengthy tutorial, we are presented with one of the stupidest most unnecessarily complicated Co-op systems I've ever encountered.
So for story missions, which are the only ones available at first, instead of simply being able to invite your friends and launch a mission we all have to start the mission separately on our own and progress through it until we see a cutscene. Then, from what we gathered, we can abandon the mission and THEN we can actually launch it together?
Who came up with this system? How many people did it go through without anyone saying "hey don't you guys think this is retarded"?
It almost feels like we are playing a souls game where you sort of have to trick it into letting you play with friends. One of my friends even specifically asked me if it was some weird souls-like coop before buying the game and I reassured him it's one of the biggest co-op games so it's definitely going to be more straightforward lol.
Other than that it seems cool so far. Compared to 3U I definitely like the bigger more seamless environments.
I think I'm going to try the Charge blade for now, I've read it's a bit more technical than the other but IDK, it seems cool.
