LTTP: Wasteland 3

Wow. I had no idea how good this game was going to be when I started it. I was in the mood for some post-apocalyptic games after the atrocious Fallout 4 Anniversary edition was announced so I hopped in and was blown away.

This game has it all. Deep character building, excellent writing and setting, terrific tactical combat. Even humor!

Has anyone else played this absolute gem?

Have been meaning to play this for a long while, still sits in my backlog.

Question: is the combat similar to Xcom?

Almost finished it in online co-op with my brother. Real good RPG but at the end way too combat-focused for my taste. Lots of quest have only binary choices, like 'help faction/person x or y", but you can't really betray both or find your own clever solution.

Nevertheless, a good and rare RPG.

I played it at launch and did not have a good time with it, it was a buggy mess and had some game breaking stuff. Cool atmosphere and whatnot, but there was nothing memorable in it.

If you really want to feel the spirit and atmosphere of the early Fallout games, play Wasteland 2-3.

It's pretty close, with different weapons/abilities obiviously. The one annoying thing regarding combat though is that the game is real time outside combat. And while sometimes you'll be able to initiate the combat and get some moves in before your opponent(s), more often than not (say, when opening a door to a building), the enemy gets the first turn. And if we're talking about a huge mob of baddies, the advantage they get can be quite substantial. A minor gripe, but it does get more annoying as the game progresses.

Other than that, a great game. Great soundtrack. Some nice nods to other media as well, I completely lost it at a bunch of robots debating whether they should turn around a turtle laying on its back.

It's unexpectedly good

I've heard it was buggy at launch but got fixed.
The thing I liked the most is that it's checks when RPing don't involve luck or dices. If your stat is high enough, you pass the check and your character proceeds to convince or tinker successfully.

Wasteland 3 is great!

Almost but thankfully less RNG (easier modes (or customizable) almost guarantee 100% hits). It uses AP (Action Points) to move/shoot etc

One of my favourite crpgs.

Played in coop. One of the best example of choices and consequences in an rpg imo. Really had a hard time in deciding what to do, especially with a coop partner.

It's been a long time since I played it, but I think there was a trick where you could often put most of your team in overwatch and have one move forward to trigger the encounter then your team shoots them before they can react. But as you said, it won't work with doorways and the like.

Can remember...yep. But its pretty much the same in every other turnbased RPG. If you run mindless in any encounter, you almost always have the disadvantage. 🤷‍♂️

I finished it back in September and put a little over 60 hours into it. An absolute masterpiece, I loved it. The gameplay is fun, the story is interesting, and the choice system, the way your decisions actually affect the world around you, is really well done.

It's a great game and has the old school Fallout vibes.

I did like some of the other recent CRPGs a bit more like Pathfinder WotR, Rogue Trader and BG3, but that just means the overall field got a lot better vs Wasteland 3 not being great.

Anyways, I highly recommend it if you feel like playing a tactical CRPG in the apocalypse setting.

Hmm I have a great friend I play lots of coop with. EDF, Nightreign, Tiny Tina, Dying Light, I wonder if Wasteland 3 would be for us... It's rather slow like BG3 right?
