Going through my backlog and just finished this (not 100%, & not going to!) after leaving it at the beginning of world 5 for years.
My fuck what were they smoking when they made some of those later levels. I don't mind hard games but at least make them fair and hard. Admittedly half the problem is because of the dual screens, which was well noted in reviews at release - but they didn't have to put bloody enemies in there!
My most hated aspect is the garbage screen scrolling. Is this the only 2d platformer with camera issues? You're on the right edge of screen and it just will not budge to show you what's there, until you move smack bang into it. Oh, but i know what's bloody there, one of those shitheads shooting spineys, and probably a skeleton bird dropping bombs right in the only place you can jump.
Anyway, after finishing it i did the extra level in World 5, and that will be the last time i ever switch it on. While this level is fairer in it's difficulty, man, it was raking up my extra lives like no tomorrow.
I think this game ought to deserve the title of hardest Nintendo game ever. These levels really feel like something a fan would hack together as a 'nightmare pack' or some shit.
Perhaps like Galaxy 2 (and JPN SMB2) they were trying to give players who played the original a real challenge? Or is Artoon just batshit insane?
Yep!
But you've got Tezuka as a producer! I can't imagine he actually saw and approved each and every one of these levels.
I have Contra 4 in my backlog too and honestly after playing this, i'm thinking that'll be a walk in the park now
