Title of the album seems apt. I think it's pretty terrible overall. :'( But there are 2 or 3 tracks that seem alright. Definitely will have to give it more of a listen.

Didn't realize this was out already. Listening to it now, the first few tracks kind of suck but the strings on Solitude sound killer.

Do it, Try it sounds a bit better without having to look at that stupid dog video, but that is not saying much because it still sounds bad.

I wasn't a fan of their last album besides 1 or 2 songs and this is looking like it might be the same. Maybe it will grow on me....

Respect that he is trying new things though.

I did not like this one at all. It feels like he's mad that he got stuck doing Oblivion for a bit so he's just throwing all the crazy shit out of his system now

I was listening to it over the weekend on Spotify. I like it, though Do it, Try it is a bad single. There are much better songs on the album imo.

Wasn't a fan on the first listen, but a handful of tracks have grown on me. It's overall very derivative of 80's synthpop, yet still listenable. Go!, Solitude, The Wizard, and Time Wind will probably get decent play from me over the course of the year.

Super sad I didn't like this album at all. Even the artwork for the singles and album were underwhelming compared to the past ones. Walkaway Blues & Road Blaster are the only songs I can get into so far. I also don't get why he didn't just sing on all the tracks. His voice sounds great and I find it strange he just gave up so much control. Not a fan of the new female singer at all. Morgan's voice was beautiful and yet she never got as much chances to showcase her voice like this new singer did.. and Morgan's voice was more suited to M83's general style... oh well.

Aptly named. At least he realized what most people would think of it. A very far cry from his previous work. Doubt any of the songs on here will hit my regular rotation. Possibly the biggest disappointment of the past decade for me musically. Oh well, what ya gonna do.

Yeah not feeling it. Not terrible by any means but just not grabbing me.

Dead Cities and Saturdays = Youth are still their best releases imo.

Album is terrible. Hurry Up We're Dreaming was when they started going down the pan for me.

yeah...haven't listened to this one yet but a lot of the stuff on Hurry Up We're Dreaming sounded almost like a self parody (the song with the kid talking about frogs or whatever was just :/ )....though I do still enjoy some tracks on it.

Yup

I swear, some of the songs on their new album seems like they came straight from a 80s television show

YASS KINGS

Really, good band, very very good band. Mindnight City is a GOAT song.

Edit: Wait, it's a bad album? for shame. I can't believe there's nothing salvageable though.

Man, this album is gonna be divisive as hell. The opening track (first single) isn't an instant classic like Midnight City. I'm gonna give the album a few more listens before judging it though.

Moon Crystal though. 80s TV music, my god.

I like it but am confused by it. Why is Anthony not doing most of the vocals on this album? It makes the whole thing feel alien as a M83 album. Feels like I am listening to a side project more than a M83 album.

After listening to it a few times over the weekend, Do It Try It is the only song I really hate. I'm really liking the 80s vibe from most of the songs, but I'm not sure if it's going to hold up to repeated listening as well as previous albums did

The Wizard and Road Blaster are my favorites, but Time Wind is growing on me really quickly. I wish The Wizard was longer though :(

How disappointing, really tried to like this album, and aside from the novelty of one of the tracks sounding like an 80s sitcom theme, it's mostly (IMO) complete shit. Cover art is hideous too.

One of the few songs that I liked from their last album was like that too. Why can't you be longer Klaus I Love You?

I like Go! and Walkway Blues. The rest are right now either okay to pure crap.

My thoughts exactly. It simply doesn't sound like M83. Maybe next year he will rush out a new album called "treasure" and it will actually be good. Really sad that I do not like this album in the slightest as I usually listen to a lot of m83 on a daily basis. At least I have those songs to go to.

I think I'm gonna buy this. I really want it to be good.

Prepare to be letdown.

I said a lot about the album in the other thread, and after listening to it a few more times my opinion hasn't changed. It's a bit of a mess and really is understandable given his jaded view on modern music. The success of M83 after Midnight City was his undoing. Don't know if he'll be able to come back from that, but this album is pretty rock bottom.

Weird,I listened to it again tonight really liked it. It took quite a few listens, but it has an interesting and unique sound. Happy to see him still trying out new sounds instead of just settling in a comfortable rut like so many bands do.

1st listen couple days was a big meh. Listened to it a 2nd time today and it just clicked with me. Pretty solid album

I disagree.

If there wasn't a band called Air, then maybe it would sound interesting or unique, but it's been done before and far better. I agree that many bands get stuck in this comfortable place, where they don't change their sound much between albums. Chvrches is the poster child for this, as their last album was such a huge letdown. But Junk feels like the type of album where there is no real clear vision, Anthony just seemed to change course of the progression M83 was on because of the success he had with Midnight City/HUWD.

New sounds? This sounds like a random 80's dad cassete tape.

I love Air, but after Moon Safari and the Virgin Suicides the basically kwpt putting the exact same record time and time again.

I was going to just let this drop in the other thread, but now it looks like it's not going to drop.

What I'm getting is that, like one of the album reviews said, people feel like they have some kind of contract with M83 where he is supposed to deliver music according to some kind of career narrative. If the music "changes," it is supposed to change in a certain way.

Instead, he made an album with songs that sound like Level 42, Gene Page, or a Neil Diamond song that ripped off E.T. Of course people were going to hate it! You don't do that unless the music is important to you, for whatever personal reason you may have.

This is all about music to bring back a certain time and place. As far as I'm concerned, it succeeds by being actually faithful to the era that it was trying to evoke.

If it means nothing to you, that's exactly the risk that was taken when this was made.

Those that don't like the album aren't aesthetic enough. They'll catch on it a few years. Gonzalez however is already there. Loved it.
