pretty sure this whole album is a 'fuck you' to folks whose knowledge of M83 begins and ends with Midnight City.

i've always been a casual fan but i admire his artistic self-sabotage.

I'm sorta tired of hearing this from people who think just because others don't like Junk, must mean they're just band wagoners who only know M83 because of Midnight City. That's not usually the case. I'm finding that people who aren't into this album are the long time fans, not the people who only know M83 because of HUWD.

Been a fan since Dead Cities, which was 2003. My favorite M83 album is Digital Shades Vol. 1, which is so far removed from anything on HUWD or Junk. This album is indeed a big "fuck you" to modern music and the landscape, but he didn't make an album that echoes his sentiments in that Pitchfork interview. Just made an album that can be added to the pile of uninspired junk.

There are so many innovative artists out there right now whose albums make you feel like "wow, this is something new and a unique take on this genre". It would be one thing if Junk came out and was a miss, which it is, because it happens. But the fact that Anthony is ranting like a child about an industry that is doing nothing special, when in fact he only contributed to that notion, makes me really lose a bit of respect for him.

I've been listening to this pretty non stop the past few days and I love the album personally. While there are a few songs that are just alright like Moon Crystal and Tension but I find the album is pretty solid overall. I would say this is my album of the year so far it's just so catchy and fun and the funk influences on here are great.

The album kicks off really strong with the first 4 tracks all being solid and finishes out nicely but I feel the album could have done without songs like Moon Crystal, I would have preferred full songs instead of those. I also thought the spoken part in For the Kids completely drags down the song.

While I didn't lose respect for him I can agree that the whole rant about the music industry is so cliche that it really doesn't do anything for him. I always hate when people bitch about the music industry like this it's like who are you to tell people what music is and what they should listen to and with the amount of ways we can consume music nowadays there is always plenty of ways to discover new and interesting stuff.

Just wanted to update my impressions here now that it's been out a bit. I think my thoughts are in the other thread but this is what came up when I did a search

Basically, I've done a complete 180. I went from thinking it was mostly hot garbage minus two songs to pretty much loving the entire thing minus a few moments. It's incredible and probably my favorite since Saturdays=youth. I can definitely see why it's divisive but the sound really grew on me and the songwriting is nice. I loved hurry up but only ever found myself returning for maybe 6 of those songs, even after a few years. This however.. tasty.

One of my favorite albums of the year. The first M83 album I've ever really listened to, and when I try to go back to prior albums, I can't get into them.
