Ok I picked up this average looking headset for Xbox since I want to be able to talk online when I play Halo2. Anyway it seems I cannot connect it to the controller as it doesn't come with anything to connect it to it. Instead inside this package it has a little piece of paper with an illiustration showing this headset connecting to a Madcatz controller.....

Do I have to get a madcatz controller to connect this???

I read something about this product being a replacement headset. Does this mean the only way to get a real headset is to pay 50+ bucks? What options do I have. And is there something I can buy to connect this crappy product to my xbox controller?

It sounds like you bought a headset without a Xbox Live Communicator. You can try searching ebay and buying just the communicator or you can buy either a MS Headset or a Xbox Live Starter Kit which include the Xbox Live Communicator.

Here's a pic of the MS headset connected to a Xbox Live Communicator.

The standard controllers do not have a connection for a headset. The official communicator comes with an adapter for the controller port for headsets. You can get this with the live starter kit or standalone for $30. There is also a madcatz (and some other) controllers that come with a port built in, but these come bundled with a headset.
