Pop star Madonna has apologized for using a racial slur to refer to her son on an Instagram post.

The singer uploaded a snapshot of 13-year-old Rocco Ritchie boxing on Friday night, with the offensive epithet used in a hashtag accompanying the photo.

"I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the 'n-word'," she said in a statement issued on Saturday.

"It was not meant as a racial slur. I am not a racist. There's no way to defend the use of the word."

Madonna's comment was swiftly deleted from her Instagram account after some of her 1.1 million followers berated her for using the hashtag "#disnigga"

"One of my best children is black."

For someone to be around during slavery days and still think it's okay to say that is very disappointing.

iDied lmao

I'm actually okay with some white people using nigga, but Madonna is too white for that nonsense.

Oh Madge.

Isn't she supposed to be taking a more 'serious' tack with her next album? I want another Ray of Light, Madonna, but this kind of stuff isn't exactly coherent with some serious/enlightened reinvention.

nigger/nigga/etc has so many meanings and uses it's ridiculous. Obviously this wasn't intended to be malicious or hateful.

It's just a word, stop giving it so much power.

Agreed. If a black person said "Cracker" in regards to a white person, it wouldn't receive any where near as much attention. But because it's the N word everyone rages.

and why isn't there a white history month?

what's up with that?

This is a pretty silly statement here, if someone as well known as her said "Cracker" and was black, plenty of people would be falling all over themselves to manufacture outrage just as they did here.

That being said I saw this yesterday and didn't care at all. Like someone else said, getting 'upset' when someone other than us uses the word 'nigga' is so fucking 90's. Give it up already. The hypocrisy is just ridiculous. Its just a word. Sort of upset that she bit on the nonsense and apologized.

One can easily be defined, and the pain can quickly be understood.

Cracker doesn't mean anything, does it?

Edit: I mean it doesn't mean anything more than "lol white people"

It supposedly refers to poor whites in the South. I heard it originates from white people cracking whips, but I don't know if that's true.

Here is what I don't understand. Do people actually believe these apologies? I mean the people who are offended and "demand" them in the first place? It is obvious they are never sincere and are only done under duress to make the "problem" go away, as in, most of the time the person who supposedly needs to apologize doesn't actually think they did anything wrong and are simply saying empty, baseless words to remove the threat of whatever the offended party is capable of (or the offender's bosses overestimate and fear what they are capable of)

I mean it really just ultimately seems to me like a gotcha!, where the offended just want to say that they made someone do something to make themselves feel better, like they had the power to control someone's actions.
