I've been meaning to pick both these games up... Phantom Dust may or may not be my cup of tea, but the fact that it's a Japanese budget release for Xbox and it's XBL compatible (and made by the Panzer Dragoon guys) definitely interests me. I'll have to pick it up eventually... I'm running on empty and need money for gas/car wash (plus I owe $3000) so maybe next week or something

A question of Phantom Brave - if I didn't really like Disgaea, will I like this? Disgaea was a bit too quirky and too much of a level grinder for my tastes.

Disgaea IS pretty quirky, and to be honest, so is Phantom Brave. Not as much, but it is. Its a bit of a trademark of their titles. The battle system I feel is much more interesting. Random Dungeons are neat, and I guess there's tricks to level up fast.

I have been told however, you can beat the game at a normal pace if you like. Like disgaea it isnt required you get top characters, its just there for people who like to tweak. Theres plenty of straight up story and characters to meet if you arent there for the uber level/item grind like I am

For $20, I honestly have to say maybe. Once you finish the story, the only things left to do are complete all 114 missions, and then gather all the skills, and even then you can't do it without going online.

I mean, there are several other $20 titles out there (both new and old), some of those games may be a better choice, but Phantom Dust stands out among them, not as the best, but as a
