It seems SOE is making an MMO based off Magic: The Gathering for 2010.

Sony Online Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast have teamed up for Magic: The Gathering - Tactics, an online, 3D turn-based strategy game coming to the PC and PlayStation 3 next year.

SOE's fascination with card games finally comes full circle. After years of creating collectible card games based on their popular MMO properties like EverQuest and Star Wars Galaxies, now the company's Denver studio is creating a strategy game based on the inspirations for those games - Magic: The Gathering.

Magic: The Gathering - Tactics draws on the Planeswalkers lore of Magic, putting players in control of 3D figures and spells from the popular CCG. The game will include both single player scenarios and online PVP multiplayer. As with any Magic-related product, fans can expect regular content expansions and strong tournament support, along with achievements and rankings.

"By collaborating with Wizards of the Coast, we're able to combine the strengths of both companies to develop an innovative, online, 3D game based on an extremely popular IP," said John Smedley, president, Sony Online Entertainment. "We're going to be taking the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse places players have never seen."

I still prefer the Xbox Live Arcade Magic game myself, as it's the straight-up card game and not a strategy derivative, but it's nice to see the PlayStation 3 getting a little Magic loving either way.

Looks for Magic: The Gathering - Tactics to hit the PC in early 2010, with a PlayStation 3 release coming soon after.

Not sure if want? I'm not sure what they are after here. PC players already have the card game. Are they just going to make everything 3-D instead of 2-d artwork and have it play the same?

SOE is mostly Sony exclusive.

It's a completely different game based on the card universe, like that old arcade-rts-thing was.

Sounds cool to me.

I imagine it will be something like Etherlords or PoxNora. They'll ether charge a monthly fee and make us earn our "cards" or it will be pack based like MTGO or PoxNora. I am interested in seeing the screens.

What part of this is an MMO?
Hmm... I guess I just made that assumption based on it being made by Sony Online Entertainment.

I'd need to see the original press release to be sure, but yeah, it might not be an MMO.

Please be the XBLA version with a deck editor... please be the XBLA version with a deck editor...

MMO? FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. Fuck you Wizards. I asked a Magic game on PS3, but I expected M:tG Online/XBLA instead of this.

You simply don't want my cash, it seems.

I just want a version of the XBLA game that isn't for beginners.

x 1000. x 5000 if I can use Urza, older block/rules.

What they need to do is have a fully customizable rule set. You can play the older rules if you like or you can make the game completely your own and ignore tournament rules all together.

The fact that SoE is behind this severely dampens my enthusiasm.

If they are going with something that's card-based, I don't think they can do much better than SOE to be honest. Star Chamber, Pox Nora, and Legends of Norrath are, to my knowledge, really well received games.

Maybe it will be an MMO in the same vein as Free Realms... you'd have the RPG aspect of the game in the world of Magic and your character will have cards that can be used to duel other NPCs and players to finish quests.

SOE also did that stargate online TCG which was really well done, though the game never took off.

I'm interested in this new MTG spinoff.

Urza, seriously? That's probably the single most broken block in the game...

The PC version of the card game-MTG Online-is very much an 'advanced level' product that's intended to either complement or replace physical card purchases. Duels of the Planeswalkers (the XBLA game) and this seem like efforts to expand on the franchise's popularity by offering products to get people interested in their core business (MTG:Online sales and booster sales).

I'm skeptical because this is SOE, and I've never remotely liked anything to come out of that studio.

This is, in fact, precisely Wizards of the Coast's explicitly stated platform development strategy.

Nothing in the original announcement says this is a MMO.

It's turn based strategy game..... how are we getting MMO out of this?

It's a multiplayer online TBS. It might technically not be "massively multiplayer," but it's almost certainly at least "large-group instanced multiplayer" a la something like Guild Wars.

SOE MMOs announced for PC/PS3, this generation:
Free Realms (TBA)
The Agency (TBA)
DC Universe Online (TBA)
MTG Tactics (TBA)

The last SOE title I bought, Jeopardy! PSN, was wretched so I don't plan on buying anything else published by them ever.

I think we'll never see this, considering how WotC has a successful MTG formula on PC. They won't allow a cheap game to eat their pie.

sounds like what you want is magic workstation.

All this is doing is making me want to play PC Magic Online. The thought of paying for virtual packs at MSRP is holding me back, though -_-

Same here... Some friends playing MTGO are tempting me to join them, but it's already awfully expensive as a card game, so as a digital game... It's even worse, since you can have discount on booster boxes in real life.

Of course, the fact that you can claim real cards with complete digital sets make a bargain on the prices unlikely.

SOE where's Free Realms & the other MMO's you announced ages ago. :(

Well Free Realms has been out for a while. DC Universe is supposed to be out in the new year. Sadly I don't know whats going on with Agency, that was the one I was most curious about due to its setting.

Just play pauper (PDCMagic.com) player-run tournaments, it's inexpensive, there is a robust metagame, and there are enough tourneys out there that one a week (which can be very time consuming!) is also pretty viable. Get your cards from the bots by buying bot credit on their websites.

Taking decks that aren't PTQ-grade stuff (read: cheaper, with less color splashes and more marginal-but potentially fun!-cards) into the casual room also works very well.

It doesn't have to be expensive. Unless you a) demand to play draft and b) are really bad at it. Then your pocketbook is in for a world of hurt. Even playing tournament-level constructed isn't all that expensive given that you can later trade away the cards and then cash out the tickets on ebay.

So it's supposed to be out today, but the website still says "Coming 1-18". Maybe it'll be out by midnight, California time.

I was able to download it, but unable to play it. Very intense lag. Huge memory leak. I can't even see the gameplay due to graphical glitches. I've tried on the lowest settings as well as the highest settings with the same results. Maybe put this one on the shelf for a bit or wait for the console version.

On top of any bugs, it looks like everything is done server side, and they're being swamped. Going by the early reports, I would still consider it to be in the beta stage.

They fixed the lag. Pretty fun game but pointless for people like me who live outside of USA because we can't participate in the tournaments.

Yep. I stand corrected. The lag is gone and after turning off "Enable Lights" and "Enable Fog" I was able to see the gameplay. Weird that I can run it at 1680x1050 at the highest settings except for lights and fog? Whatev, I guess. As long as I can try it out, I'm happy. :)
