Magic: The Gathering - Tactics MMO Announced [Update: Out Now?]

Going to check it out. Would be willing to buy "packs" if the gameplay was compelling, but then the vast majority of cards would have to feel "different" for me, i.e if there are forty creatures then 35 of them shouldn't be attack/defense/health vanilla.

What?

also: What, tomorrow?
I think it was Tuesday actually, title is out of date. And its free-to-play with real money "booster packs".

With single-player campaigns.

So I know there was some confusion about the genre earlier in the thread-is this an MMO or not?

Read a bit in the official boards, and yeah, this looks (again) way to greedy from SOE's side to even try it out.

Well, some day, the perfect MtG videogame version will rise. Some day!

Yeah, I read about this when they announced it and thought it sounded cool, but then read that it would be microtransaction-based. So stupid. Just let me pay 60 bucks and play the whole damn game.

Yeah, those prices are way too high.

Boosters
Set 1 Booster Pack $3.99
Set 1 Booster Box $84.99

Campaign
Chapter 2 $5.00
Chapter 3 $5.00
Chapter 4 $5.00
Chapter 5 $5.00

Singles
$1.00-$10.00

The first campaign chapter didn't even offer an hour of entertainment.

It already did. Now it just needs a re-release.

I loved that game. I still own the original release and the first expansion, but I can't figure out how to install the patch that makes it playable, as every site that has the patch just seems to link to a torrent for the game.

So, it's... Magic: the Gathering: Online, but in 3D?

It supposedly runs fine, but as you say you need to install it, which is the problem, since the installer is a 16-bit executable, and those don't run on 64-bit OSs. Once you install it (you can do it fine in a virtual PC) it is supposed to run great. There were 2 expansions and I think the 2nd added quite a number of cards and improvements to AI, they'd be worth hunting down if you ever revisit it.

I keep hoping for a GOG release one day, with a custom installer and everything automatically patched.

Too crazy.
When I get the itch, I am still playing the Magic Game from 1997. Someone is even patching the game to include all the recent cards, but only in MP. If someone could do that for SP, this would be the most perfect Magic game right there.
Other than that its nice to be able to play with friends using Magic Workstation at least. Doing that regularly the last weeks. And its really free.

Heres the link (No torrents, every version. The complete version works without installing):

1997 Magic including all cards for MP, optimated for XP and Windows 7

Why wont they just makes this kind of game? Its all I want from them.

Because they dont need to and they can sell a shitload of boosters in an official game with microtransactions. I dont think they will ever make a game like this again. Our biggest hope is a patch for SP to include all the cards. Doesnt seem to be possible for now though.

I never got into Magic: Online because the idea of paying money for virtual cards when I already spend like twenty bucks a month on real cards just seemed ludicrous.

There's no monthly fee though (you can actually play a few decks for free). And if you do pauper rules you can still have a lot of freedom, and enjoy the game quite a bit. For a few bucks you can get everything you need I think... been a while. But there's definitely a way to enjoy MTG:O without spending a lot.

The sealed deck drafts are a ton of fun though, I've only done one or two (a long time ago), but making a deck from a random set of cards to duel a few other players in a tourney is great, if you're good and win you lose nothing too.

Edit: Oops, misread, I didn't see the "real" cards, and thought you were saying spending $20/month on cards was ludicrous. Nevermind any of that then! :)

It did get a re-release. They improved the interface, removed deck building, and made it more console friendly. Opinions on the game are pretty polarized. The company that made it is hiring for another MTG game, possibly a sequel.

Apparently playing with older sets is quite cheap, but I agree that I'd rather just buy the cards. I've been playing Duels of the Planeswalkers because I can go crazy on buying boosters, but I just need a real Magic fix.

Thats not a "re-release" by any stretch. Its a game upon the same franchise with a completely different focus and pricing structure.

There's an actual entire world randomly generated each time you play to explore, complete with quests and dungeons and stat leveling, shops to buy cards and food, and more. The newer title you're talking about is spiffy looking, but pretty lacking in content, which the older game has in spades.
