A man who said he fell into his car's trunk and got locked in after a walk on the beach was rescued Wednesday by Monroe County Sheriff's deputy who heard him knocking for help.

The oddball incident began about 9:30 p.m. when Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy Seth Hopp answered a call about a report of a suspicious vehicle parked near Sombrereo Beach. There, Hopp said he found a 1997 Lincoln Continental with all four doors open but no one in sight.

Drawing closer, Hopp said, "I then began to hear a knocking coming from the closed trunk."

Come out, Hopp ordered after announcing himself as "Sheriff's Office."

I can't, answered a voice that turned out to belong to be 32-year-old Rob Moore of Marathon.

"I opened the trunk and a...male emerged," said Hopp. And the male had an unusual explanation for his predicament.

After going for a walk on the beach, Moore told the deputy, "he was looking for the keys to the vehicle and had accidently fallen in the trunk while searching for the keys. The trunk then closed on top of him."

What happened to Moore's keys remains unknown. The deputy may have opened the trunk using an in-car release, said Monroe County Sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin.

During his interview with Hopp, Moore told the deputy he had in the car a pill bottle containing marijuana.

Moore was charged marijuana possession, a first degree misdemeanor.

Moore's mother arrived and drove him home in the Lincoln, Hopp said.

"Certainly these are unusual circumstances," said Herrin. "But we have no reason to believe it happened in any way other than what he described."

I can't even imagine how this would happen.

Hey, at least they managed to bust him for having a small bit of weed. I feel safer already.

What kinda moron

I actually had that happen once when I was a kid.. However it was a hatchback (80s Toyota Supra), so I managed to get the back seat down and wiggle out.

I can't even imagine how this would happen.

Maybe a pelican landed on it? When I lived in Florida, I never had that problem with the trunk, but they would decide to land on my hood a lot (in my Mustang Convertible). And one time the passenger seat and we went for a ride a while which was pretty surreal. Though not as surreal as if he had been driving.

Sounds smart enough to me. You're locked in the trunk of a car that has an illegal drug in it and at the mercy of a police officer... I'd come clean.

Though BTW the fact that's illegal is insane and immoral in 2016.

'Merica (Colorado and Oregon excluded).

I... I don't think that's what happened at all. Probably some shady deal went wrong and that was the only story he could think of.
-edit-
But then again, I don't really know and I probably should pass judgement! Nevermind.

It's like one of those guys that turns up to the emergency room with a vacuum up their arse and swears blind they were cleaning in the nude and just slipped.

I guess he's got it on lock.

Had a lot of junk in the trunk.
Sometimes police are key
I guess he got booted.
Did he take up shadowboxing?

I feel so much safer knowing that he was arrested for weed possession! Thanks for keeping us safe! I can't bear to live in a world with those drug addicts! Good job Florida PD! Our kids are indebted to your good work! May God bless you! America! Ahhhhhhh!

It's funny how police how such an elementary view of the world

Good guys bad guys... Lol

A quick google tells me the 1997 Lincoln Continental has a trunk release button, but can sometimes not work if the fuse is blown, or the relay needs replacing. So I assume you need the keys in the ignition for it to work?

isn't this dangerous?
the one time I found myself locked in a trunk (i was a kid and being stupid with other kids), i nearly passed out
i learned it's not like in the movies

I honestly have no clue. I'm hoping we get an update in the future about him being robbed and tossed in the trunk.

dude prolly got robbed, gunman forced him in the trunk gg wp mr crime man

Why would they leave all the doors open and take nothing? Why wouldn't they assume the car had a trunk release like most modern vehicles?

I'm thinking he was high and is dumb.

And the modern phosphorus trunk release pulls weren't a safety standard until 2000 and were first implemented by the Ford Motor Company across their entire fleet (is what I think I'm reading).

Who said they took nothing? If he had drugs and got robbed, it's not like he's going to blubber to the police, "They took my drugs!"

He was probably getting stoned while walking along the beach. I've done that several times too but not right before driving home.
