An armed man has stolen jewels worth about 40m euros ($53m, £34m) in the French Riviera resort of Cannes, officials say.

They say the hold-up took place on Sunday morning at a jewellery exhibition at the Carlton Hotel.

The hotel is located on the Croisette promenade - one of the most prestigious locations in Cannes.

It is the largest in a series of high-profile thefts in the town, which is famous for its annual film festival.

The Carlton Hotel is where Alfred Hitchcock filmed To Catch A Thief - his 1955 film about a jewel thief operating in the French Riviera.

An exhibition of diamonds by the jeweller Leviev was being held in the lobby of the hotel, the BBC's Hugh Schofield reports.

Local media said the robber made off with the jewels in a briefcase. It is not yet known who the owner was.

A Cannes police spokesman said: "A full an urgent operation is under way to catch the culprit and recover these jewels. Thieves see Cannes as rich pickings."

Cannes film festival, which attracts celebrities from around the world, was hit by two jewellery thefts in May this year.

A necklace by Swiss jeweller De Grisogono reportedly worth 1.9m euros ($2.5m, £1.6m) vanished after a celebrity party at a five-star hotel in the resort town of Cap d'Antibes.

A week before, more than 777,000 euros ($1m, £650,000) worth of jewels were taken from the hotel room of an employee of exclusive Swiss jewellers Chopard.

They have strict as hell gun laws though.

Can you imagine how he/she must have felt once they realised they had lost $1m worth of jewels?

Damn, one guy alone and he got away too.

With all that kind of money there they need to beef up the security.

Even though these guys are criminals, they're still damn cool. On one of their heists they put a fresh coat of paint on a park bench so nobody would sit there and witness their robbery.

Had to google up this gang. But you're right, the description of these guys sounds entertaining.

The craziest one was when they crashed with an Audi into a Dubai shopping mall, stole millions in jewels and took off.

Is this accurate? 90 guns per 100 Americans?

Most likely. I have 12 myself. It's probably not that 90 out of a 100 people own 1 gun, but more like 30 out a 100 own 3 guns. I'd imagine it's rare to find a household with only 1 single gun. And who knows if this chart is counted legal guns or also the assumed amount of illegal guns as well.

Nearly R1 Billion. A complete restructure of my cities transport system (buses, trains, taxis, etc) is only going to cost 20 times that. And one guy pulled it off alone? Beautiful..

I'm not so sure about the beautiful part. Apparently it was basically just a robbery with him pointing his gun at people, not some elaborate Ocean 11 master plan.

I was referring more to the fact that it was enough money to nearly restructure my cities transport network. To me, the robbery in itself was somewhat beautiful too. I mean, for an individual to pull that kind of thing off without harming anybody is amazing. Though I'm not condoning what he did.

That gun chart is more interesting when you include the missing top countries:

United States
Yemen
Switzerland
Finland

Serbia

I know Finland is up there strictly because of hunting but is it the same for Switzerland?

IIRC, after completing army training, recruits get to keep their weapons as a way to create a civil defense force in the case of war.

I understand the value.

But who will buy these rocks?

There was a theory (and some evidence to support it) that Pink Panther group was hired by jewel shops to steal their merchandise to cash in on the insurance. Most of the non-unique diamonds would get cut again and then sold in the Middle East through shady channels.

Million-euro reward for return of Cannes jewels

A €1 million reward has been offered up for any information that will lead to the return of €103 million worth of jewellery stolen from the Riviera resort of Cannes last month. The offer is subject to certain conditions, however.

Insurers Lloyd's of London on Tuesday offered up to €1 million ($1.3m) for information leading to the recovery of jewels stolen from a Cannes hotel last month worth an estimated €103 million.

"A reward of up to 1,000,000 euros pro rata is offered to the first person who provides information which leads to recovery of the goods. Offer subject to certain conditions," said the insurer in a statement.

On July 28th, an armed man pulled off a brazen heist in broad daylight at the luxury Carlton Hotel on the promenade of the French Riviera resort, in one of the world's biggest jewellery thefts.

Brandishing a semi-automatic pistol, his head covered with a cloth, the robber stole jewels that were part of an exhibition by a group owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev.

Authorities said he escaped with "all kinds of different" jewellery, including "rings, pendants, and earrings encrusted with diamonds."

The exhibition was held in a wing of the hotel with direct access to the street and police said they had not been alerted that it was taking place.

Prosecutors said the robber entered the exhibition room through a French window that opened onto a terrace, which itself looks onto the popular Croisette avenue in Cannes.

Lloyd's said in a statement that "persons with specific information should contact SW Associates on +33 610950564 between 18h00-19h00 or send an email to reward1millionE@gmail.com."

Cannes has fallen prey to thieves several times recently, notably during this year's film festival, which attracts a glittering array of celebrities from the movie world.

In a pre-dawn heist at a hotel during the festival in May, thieves stole jewellery worth $1.4 million due to be loaned to movie stars.

That robbery took place in the hotel room of an American employee of Swiss jeweller Chopard while she was out for the evening, police said.

In a scene straight from a Hollywood film, a strongbox containing jewels was ripped out of the wardrobe and carried off, they said.

In a second theft during the festival, robbers made off with a diamond necklace with an estimated value of $1.9 million.

At least two apartments rented by film executives were also burgled during the 2013 festival, with thieves taking cash, jewellery and other personal items.
