Mario 64 DS-- WTF AM I DOING

Ok, just picked up a DS and couldn't get any games. Came with M64, so I thought that'd last me............. And I've spent the last 45 minutes blindly trying anything to make the controls work. I've somehow managed to get to the bomb kind twice only to get completely destroyed. I mean destroyed. This is insane.

The thumbstrap is a freakin abomination unto Nuggen.
 
I make do with the d-pad.

With all these hot titles coming out soon you can forget about Mario anyway.
 
you shouldn't be using the thumbstrap.

dpad + run. It has a learning curve. If you can forget the beautiful mario 64 controls of the n64 for a second you will adapt and have fun.
 
i got to about the same point and hit a wall. i had switched between both the touch mode and the controller mode, even using the stylus at times but with no luck. i put the game down at that point, picked it up a few days later only to get further, and put it down again, never to play it.

The problem with the B-Bomb boss is that (IIRC) you have to circle around him a lot and very accurately to avoid hitting him, his goons, or running off the platform and into the lava. Very hard for me to do without constantly recentering my thumb.

At some point i may pick it up to beat the game (forget completing it), but at this point i'm still bitter about the lacking control in this game.

Exactly how I felt when playing this game although I got past the bomb king. It doesn't help that I played the N64 version quite a bit so playing this port infuriates me at how bad the controls are implemented. The only reason why I haven't ditched this title yet is because I want to unlock all the mini-games :P

SM64 was a bad game to shoehorn a touch screen or even digital control onto, when the original touted very smooth analog control. The minigames are the true stars of the game, and while not innovative in their touch screen use, they're addictive as hell.
 
Playing Mario 64 with the d-pad takes away all of the joy from the game, imo. =/ Mario 64 with a d-pad just isn't Mario 64.
 
wow your just really bad at controlling the game then. have you checked to see that you are using the right control scheme that is setup in the options?

i've played with the d-pad, thumbstrap, and stylus. no problems with any of the setups.
 
I actually liked the thumb strap for Mario. It wasn't as good as the N64 controls but it worked. The only parts that were hard were where you needed exact precision to do jumps, but after about an hour of practice you should get it. The d pad was way too slow for me.
 
I use dpad control setup, occasionally using the thumbstrap as it moves more naturually but occcassionally is insuffecient. I like just roaming around the castle with the thumbstrap, but tight parts of levels I use the dpad. I mainly concentrate on unlocking the new stuff.
 
If you're really that bad with the D-pad, you're pathetic and have no patience. Is it as tight as the N64 version? No. Is it sufficient and still a fun game? You bet.

Honestly, the game seems a lot easier to me than I remember it.
 
man... I made it through 150 stars all with my damn thumb... no strap, my thumb...

I really never saw what everyone was bitching about ... Took about as long to get used to that as it did the analog stick in the first place (3 stars, i guess)....... but a decade of analog control and no other challenge can really make us winy bitches i guess.

i dont get it. i dont even own a DS, but when i first tried out mario64ds i had absolutely no problems with the control. are you guys retarded, or do you just have malformed thumbs?

The buttons are too small and close together and the d-pad was just not meant for the game. The idea of a 3D platformer and digital control is so foreign to me now, especially one that made such excellent use of it. If i wanted to play Mario with the d-pad, i could go back to any of the 2D versions of the game.

i had really hoped that i could finally finish Mario 64 since i never owned an N64, but the DS version was such a disappointment in terms of control. Ironically, a few months after getting my DS i came across an N64. i'll finally get to play the game the way it was meant to be played.
 
Firsly, you MUST put your thumb down like this:

After that it is a BREEZE! You may have to readjust where your thumb is from time to time!

It's easy as piss ffs.
 
I use the thumb strap, I couldn't figure out how to do accurate side-jumps with the d-pad.

No, pissing is much easier, due in part because Nintendo didn't try to replace my hand with an LCD screen and a thumbstrap.
 
So long as you dont KEY your touch screen, nor do you have severe dandruff problems, then no, it shouldnt.

Besides, whats that stylus doing on your touch screen?

Try to forget that you've been playing videogames for the past x years, then just give yourself some time with the thumb strap. It'll take a little while and some patience, but it'll come to you. It took me forever to adjust to the thumbstick on the N64, so I don't really see this as all that different.

The funny thing is, if you'd never played a videogame in your life, you'd adjust a lot faster.
 
The thumbstrap can work really well, you just have to get used to picking up your thumb and putting it down towards center. Think of it like mouse-look in PC FPS games.
 
I used the thumb strap and had no major problems. Although it does take a few hours to master, for instance: when you are new to the DS and this game in particular, I tended to keep the thumb pad moving upwards going off the top of the screen. I then learned that you have to actually move up the screen (or left and right for that matter) and HOLD the thumb in position moving slightly left or right to go that way.
Its complicated at the start, but its does work out!
 
Dude, it isn't THAT bad. It took me a while to get used to the thumbstrap, but after I Did it really works quite well for the first game on DS to use the controls. I think soon enough it's going to be perfected, but we'll see.

But yeah, if it bothers you, just use the d-pad. You'll get used to that not far into the game.
 
Yeah I had to resort to the D-pad.... the DS is definitely not lefty-friendly. Kirby is a bitch on those Boss Levels where you control that cart.... I literally block the entire screen while trying to steer lol
 
I'm also left-handed and i'm starting to think it may be my problem with Kirby.
Also i wanted to sympathise with the thread starter, the controls of Mario64x4 are sucky and someone else said --- Mario 64 was better on the N64.
 
I still have no clue why nobody can play this game. I found the controls to be MUCH better on the DS than on the N64. In fact, I got all 150 stars easily with the DS while I never came close to 120 on the 64.
 
Bah. Using the thumbstrap felt natural for me after 10 stars or so. In the end I controlled better with the touch screen than I ever did with the N64 game pad.
Don't resort to playing with the d-pad, IMO it really destroys the game.
 
I had no problem with the thumbstrap in Mario. I didn't have all that much fun after I unlocked all the decent minigames, though I did get all 150 stars.

I never adjusted to the horrible digital controls, though.
 
Ok, I've picked up Kirby so all is well.

I did manage to get somewhere using the stylus in dual control. The thumb is still terrible. My thumb only gets to the middle of the screen while comfortably holding it, and trying to get to the other side makes me stretch hand and move the entire thing, making control.... stupid.
 
I hate that thumbstrap because the 'anchor' moves so I end up moving my thumb all over the fucking screen. They shouldn't have made it so the point of touch drags around.

Problem is, the point of touch moving means you're moving beyond the maximum. and if htat's the case, imagine if the centre stayed where you touched, then moved beyond the maximum. you'd then have to move FURTHER than the maximum to return to centre, or go past to do a 180. not intuitive. Having said that, people tell me that's how Rayman works, and it's fine, so go figure.
