Mario Kart DS "Regional"

Does anyone know what Mario Kart DS "Regional" online play is based upon? I have a US Mario Kart, a swedish DS and I'm playing in sweden (so, my router aquires a swedish IP address). I have seen no indication that "Regional" connects me to swedish or even scandinavian players. The opponents seems to be american and in one case a mexican guy. So: is regional based upon some hardwired code in the MK gamecard??

Well, as the US version has 'regional' whereas the European version has 'continental', I'd say you're playing to US gamers choosing 'regional' when playing your game in Sweden.

Friends: Friends play is used when you wish to race against those players you have added to you Friends Roster. By selecting the Friend mode when playing online, other "non-friend" players are not able to join that person in online play.

Rivals: Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection is able to keep track of your stats and determine your skill level. By selecting to play against a rival, player's are matched up with others with similar skill levels.

Regional Play: When you select Regional Play, you are matched up against anyone else who is playing within your region (e.g., North America), regardless of skill level or "friend" status.

Worldwide: When selecting Worldwide, you are matched up against anyone else who is online, regardless of skill level or "friend" status.

There are probably only 3 regions.

North America
Europe
Asia

And you can see their region based on the color of their text above them when racing.

I figured Regional would mean I'd be less likely to encounter the legitimate cheaters, otherwise called "snakers." I was wrong. The first race -- the VERY first race I tried on the WFC -- some asshole was snaking.

I finished the race, but I wanted to drop out so bad because it wasn't fair. The race began, the kid got the starting boost off the line, I saw him zig-zag a few times, then never saw him again the entire race. That's why I'm going to only be playing with people I know from here on out who don't exploit a gameplay element loophole to win.

Weak fucking sauce, straight up.

Damn Fucking Straight.

When racing on Delphino Square in the past after 2 corners this snaking fucker was already ahead by miles. 2 other players dropped out. I wasnt gonna waste my time with the snaker so I did too.

Played a few games of Rival Mode today. No Snakers and it was very enjoyable.

All were close races.

Rival mode doesn't work that well for me...

It seems like its paired based on the difference between your wins and losses.

Eg.

A guy with 150 wins and 0 losses would be paired with a guy with 1150 wins and 1000 losses. Not exactly the same skill level to me.

Edit: Just tried Rivals mode... what kinda BS is this. I have a 43-46 win-loss and I get paired with a 350-50 win loss and 2 other guys. This guy snaked through the race, winning by at least half a lap on Delfino Square.

the snaking thing is unfortunate, because even if you don't like it, you are basically forced to learn it to compete and like it or not the game becomes about that pretty quickly. Ways to limit it are to take non snake friendly levels, like DK Pass, dropping is a rampant problem too, you people that say "it sucks to play with snakers so I'm dropping" are worse than the snakers IMO.

It's this mentality that creeps in even when you don't snake, I see droppers all the time if I get out of sight by the second bend (which is quite easy to do against new people, without snaking, good boosts and lines will pretty much get you 2 droppers within the first race). This all results in a poor online experience, I've probably played 60 or so 4 player matches and have finished less than 10 with all 4 players.

I played against 2 guys with 3 stars each the other day and one took one of the insta-win carts, my luigi/vacuum cart combo was no match for him (although I did make him sweat and got 1 race off him), but I had a good set of races for second place over all with the guy taking ROB.

But there's a difference between being behind and having a chance, and being behind and having no chance in Hell. I played one race where I was in third, but it was a close-able gap with some good driving. I actually got into 2nd for a lap or so, but the better players won. I had no qualms with the outcome.

That snaker encounter though pissed me off. I don't know how to snake, I don't want to learn how to snake, so it sucks that I won't know whether or not they're snakers until I'm already in the race. I'll finish the race -- I think dropping is lame as well -- but it really lowers the enjoyment of the experience.

As I said, friends are the only ones I plan to race with whenever possible, because I like a fun contest, not an execution of sportsmanship.

My record is 175-31, I just picked Rivals and got joined with people who all had huge losses and a few wins, what the hell?
